Brief Description of the lesson This lesson will be a gross motor activity that
focuses on a combination of yoga poses and animal movements related to farm
animals.
Developmental Focus (What developmental domains or skills will this lesson
address? Are you working to help children achieve a particular milestone?) Am I
focused on helping children learn and grow in a particular domain set in the NYS
Early Learning Standards?)

Children will participate in activities that will focus on physical movement through
yoga exercise with support from the teacher.

Objective(s) (What will children know, or demonstrate as a result of this learning

experience?)

The objective is for children to attempt new activities and participate in forms of
exercises. Children will perform basic creative movements with the assistance and
guidance of the teacher through the form of yoga exercise.

Connection to Standards (if applicable) (Be sure to specify which set of standards
you are working with to construct your learning activity)

NYS Early Learning Standards

Domain 1: Physical Well-Being, Health, and Motor Development
Gross motor skills
Sensorimotor skills
Physical Witness and daily activity

Relevance/Rationale (Why are the objectives of this lesson important with regard
to supporting the development, growth and learning of infants and toddlers?)

This objective is important because it gets them to participate in physical

development in a fun way. It helps the children develop balancing skills and hand
eye coordination. It helps enhance gross motor skills.

Time Needed
Approximately 5-10 minutes.

Instructional Context (Is this activity a whole group learning experience, or an

activity designed for an individual, or small group?)

The children will be engaged with the teacher to perform basic creative
movements in a large group activity.

Procedure (step by step) (will the children be participating in the activity in a

whole group, small group, or individually? How will you get childrens attention?
What will happen during the lesson what will they do? What will you do?)

This activity will be done as part of our morning circle routine. The teacher will
engage the students by having them pretend that they are on a farm through the
movement of yoga positions. The teacher will model a variety of farm animal like
yoga poses for the children to follow. This activity will be led by the lead teacher.
The assistant teacher will support children in the large groups by positioning the
childrens bodies to accompany the correct movement. This will be a fun, easy
going and relaxing activity where children learn about animals through yoga-like
poses. While the children perform yoga poses like the cow pose, the children can
role play and imitate sounds that the animals make. This will continue with other
varieties of farm animals through yoga poses.

The children will pretend to take a trip to the farm and practice all the yoga poses
of the animals they see on the farm.

Resources/Materials Needed

This will take place on the rug used for morning circle for ample space for children
to perform the creative movements.

Room modiJications (what changes, if any, will you need to make to the physical
environment to enrich this experience?)

Buy mats to keep hands and feet from slipping.

Learning Activity Plan for Infants and Toddlers

Plan for differentiated instruction/Instructional modiJications (How will you

support the individual needs of children?)

Children with special needs will have hands on assistance. Adaption of yoga poses
with props. Children will work together in partner poses, because peer
interaction is important and group yoga facilitates development of social skills.

Method of assessing childrens growth and learning (What methods will you
employ to document, or provide evidence of childrens growth and learning? Specify
the assessment tools that will be used to provide you with evidence of childrens
learning, or that objectives have been met)

A third teacher will observe and document the skills in performing gross motor
abilities such as balancing, hand eye coordination, and interaction skills.
Follow-up/Extension Activities (How can I provide an opportunity to remediate,
reinforce, or expand on students learning today in class?)

This activity can be brought outside and we can continue by including other types
of animals and yoga poses. We can add a book and yoga animal sounds to enhance
the yoga experience. We want them to experience movement and dance in a
physical and spiritual manner. The purpose of yoga is to calm the body and
become one with themselves.
