AONE Competency Leadership

During my practicum experience, recognizing my own beliefs and views on certain

matters has guided many of discussions and papers that I have written in my courses as well as
during my project. Standing on my faith has been my foundation and it has helped me to remain
curious to explore new topics and keep my mind open to learning. These leadership qualities
have taught me to keep my eyes open to see necessary changes that need to be made within my
own organization and encourage others not to be fearful of change. As I complete my project,
this will hopefully encourage positive change within our organization. HCMGT 715, taught me
the importance of building strong working relationships and how to resolve conflict while being
in a leadership role, even if changes are occurring. All the while, my goal was to live out these
leadership qualities in my everyday life to reflect my core values and be a leader that positively
supports my staff and those personnel that will assist me with my project.

AONE Competency Knowledge of the Health Care Environment

In our military organization, there are many nursing clinicians that are from many
different parts of the United States. Even though each individual nurse is a licensed and
credentialed clinician to practice in their own state, all nurses are still held accountable to be
credentialed by the military as well. As the Clinical Operations Officer at my Battalion, my role
is to provide any new guidance to the nurses that has come out from our higher headquarters.
This type of open communication is to be demonstrated in my project to help educate our
Soldiers. Articulating this information found from research and disseminated from other leaders
will invoke changes throughout our organization. NU703 taught me how to collect research data
and present it in a manner that challenges others to evaluate current process. Communication is
key once the research is complete.

AONE Competency Professionalism

There are many qualities a leader must possess, but professionalism is one of the top
characteristics that all nursing leaders must have. What I have discovered during my walk of
being a nurse, is that it is imperative that nurses are grounded on their core values. These values
will guide every decision that he/she makes. It is important to recognize that the nursing
profession is all about caring for humans and there may be times when they will come across
ethical issues. Nursing leaders must be able to remain calm and professional, and overall this
will reinforce a culture that is based on high ethical standards. NU705 was a reminder that as
nurses we may not always like the policies and procedures that are being enforced by Congress,
but we must remain professional and do what is right for our patients and their families.
Nursing as a profession embodies many values inherent in those who pursue nursing careers,
and these values drive our beliefs and behaviors (Gokenback, 2012, para. 4).

AONE Competency Communication

During my practicum experience, I created an algorithm to assist with the flow of
communication during implementation of the project. The focus was to ensure that important
topics and metrics were being discussed between the Platoon Leader and their Soldiers.
MGT701 reemphasized the significance of communication and how it influences the decision-
making process. This also engaged the Soldiers and all the supporting personnel that are a part
of the procedure for constructing a conclusion which overall helped to improve readiness.

AONE Competency Business Skills

Technology is the way forward in not only the nursing profession but also in the military
profession as well. The usage of virtual communication and computerized management has
simplified the process of having meetings. This example was seen when we performed our
meetings utilizing the Big Blue Button. NU611 taught that technology will only continue to
expand as we stay in the profession. Even as the project leader, my goal was to encourage the
Soldiers to embrace this technology and use it to their advantage.
