Mediterranean bliss in Titirangi retreat

Very rarely does Aucklands real estate market offer properties of this calibre. Located on an elevated ridge close to
Titirangis northern slopes, this imposing residence is meant for buyers on the lookout for a one-of-a-kind lifestyle.
Offering spectacular twin harbour views across its four levels, 35 Tawini Rd is a solidly built home meant for the
illustrious set.
Built in the style of a traditional Tuscany villa, the home is ideal for those who enjoy entertaining on a grand scale in a
retreat-like setting, but under thirty minutes (off peak) to Auckland City. Set on a 1254 square metre section, it is the
result of the ceaseless pursuit of perfection by its owner Niol, who has continually updated the house for 45 long
years. I love building so every time I get a new idea I have this urge to see how it would look. So in a sense I never
stopped work on the house, says Niol, a former Master Builder, pilot and collector.
The property, therefore, has a timeless, contemporary appeal. When you enter this private domain, you first see the
large pool and spa blending into the natural backdrop of the trees. The Tuscan paving and walled entertainment area
with its Italian adobe fireplace adds to the Mediterranean flavour.
The courtyard with its central fountain deposits you at a stunning adzed door in the arched portico. Once inside, its
easy to forget that you are in Titirangi because the sense of being in a castle never leaves you. To your right is a
large circular kitchen overlooking the family room, stepping out to a spectacular suspended conservatory with views
of the reserve and city. On this level is a generously proportioned lounge with its sunken fireplace, three chandeliers
and grand piano, which once belonged to the Austrian consulate. Plus, theres a formal dining room, guest bathroom,
bedroom, office and bar.
Upstairs is a panelled library, bedroom and bathroom. The piece de resistance however is the master suite, with its
private breakfast conservatory which opens fully to the bush and views and its Roman bathroom and dressing room.
The views of the Waitemata and Manukau harbours are impressive but when Niol told us that the views are even
better on the top level, we were left gasping in anticipation.
A spiral staircase takes you via a wooden hatch (which opens at the push of a button) to the Summer House.
Perched on the fourth floor like an eagle's nest, it has its own balcony and breathtaking almost circular views.
Standing here, you are higher than anyone for miles around you. You feel powerful.
As would be expected in a home of this scale, it has had its fair share of good times. Niol points out that the property
comes into its own when entertaining large groups. My former wife was a real party person and the place would
come alive when we invited family and friends over, he says.
Niols next project is building a new home on his family farm down in Katikati. Not only does the coast beckon but
theres plenty of land where he can land his beloved aircraft. Now thats something you cant do in Titirangi!
The property will be sold via auction onsite at 12:30pm, June 10, 2017. Viewing at open Homes: Saturday and
Sunday 11:00 - 11:30am.
