Purpose : The purpose of this experiment is to determine the oxalate content in coordination

compounds.

Procedure
A.Standardization of potassium permanganate solution.

0.20g dried Na2C2O4 was weighed into a conical flask. Dissolved it in 50ml of 1M H2SO4.The
solution was heated to 60C and titrated with KMnO4 solution. The first persistent was titrated
until pink color. The data had been recorded in Table 6.1.At least one more titration had been
repeated until get consistent values.

B.Determination of the oxalate content in coordination compound.

0.20g of coordination compound prepared previously was weighed. The sample was boiled with
50ml of 1M sulfuric acid in a conical flask. The solution was allowed to cool to about 60C and
was titrated slowly with the potassium permanganate solution provided. Continued until warm
solution retains a slight pink colouration after standing for about 30 seconds. At least once more
had been repeated until get consistent values. The data had been reported in table 6.2.

Question

1.Given that MNO-4 is being reduced to Mn2+ and C2O2-4 is being oxidized to Co2,write a
balanced redox equation for the titration above. Use the equation to calculate the exact molarity of
the potassium permanganate soluw.

2.Calculate the percentage by weight of oxalate in the complex, compare this with the theoretical
value and thus obtain the percentage purity of the complex.

3.Predict and draw the structure of the synthesized compound.

Introduction

The number of ligands attached to the central atom is known as the coordination number. The
size, charge and electron configuration will affect the number of bonds of the metal ions and
ligands. The electronic configuration of metal and ratio of the size of ligand and metal ion also
affect the maximum coordination number. The combination of small ligand and metal will lead to
high coordination number.

To form the coordination number, the ligand will bind with central metal atom .The number of
times of ligand to coordinate metal also known denticity. As the ligand has a lone pair more than
one atom ,it also have a capability of binding the metal ion through multiple site.
