2.How to Create a Silhouetted Image

Now that we have the layout of our yer sorted out, were ready to start thinking about
the creative elements of the design. And what could be more festive than a reindeer
silhouette?! Well use thedeer in a forestphoto as the basis for creating this, so make
sure you have it downloaded.

Step 1

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 15/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Open up the deer image inAdobe Photoshop. In theLayerspanel(Window >

Layers)drag theBackgroundlayer down onto theCreate a new layerbutton to
duplicate it. Switch off the visibility of the background layer.

Go toSelect > Color Range.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 16/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Click onto one of the lightest parts of the deer, either the antlers or ears, and then
increase theFuzzinesslevel to about145to pick up the whole deer silhouette more
strongly.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 17/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Add a newLevels Adjustment Layer, and move the sliders to increase the whiteness of
the selected area of the image.

04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Step 2
With the contrast in the image now more exaggerated, it will be easier for us to separate
the deer silhouette from the background of the photo.

Use theLasso Tool (L)to trace roughly around the left side of the deer, working around
the antler and then sectioning off the left area of the background.

Click on theRene Edgebutton at the top of the workspace, and play around with the
sliders to make the selection really tight to the silhouette of the deer.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 19/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Click onSmart Radiusand add aSmoothvalue of about2to make the edge less sharp.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 20/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

When youre happy with the selection, clickOK, and then hitDeleteto get rid of the
selected background.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 21/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Repeat the process, marking out the next section of background with theLasso Tool
(L)and using theRene Edgefunction to make it more accurate. Then hitOK,
andDeletethe selection.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 22/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Step 3
Continue to work around the edge of the reindeer silhouette (we only need to be able to
trace the head and neck of the deer, so dont worry about the bottom part of the
background), deleting sections as you go.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 23/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

Use theLasso Tool (L)orMagic Wand Tool (W)to pick out any background sections
that might remain around the silhouette and rene and delete them.

Step 4
When youre happy with the silhouette, click back onto theLevels Adjustment Layerwe
created earlier.

Well be moving this image over into Illustrator for tracing, so its important that we
make the silhouette as dark and bold as possible to get the best tracing result. Pull
theLevelssliders to the opposite direction, making the whole image much darker and
almost completely silhouetted.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 26/68

Then head up toFile > Save Asand save the image as aPSDle.

Step 5
Minimize Photoshop and open upAdobe Illustrator. Create a new document.

Go toFile > Place, choose thePSDimage, and clickOpen. With the image selected, go
toWindow > Image Trace.

Adjust theModetoBlack and White, and then check thePreviewbox at the bottom of
the window to view the tracing effect. Move the sliders around until youre happy with
the result. You want a strong silhouette, but you also want to preserve some of the

details of the edge, like fur and antler imperfections, to make the result look interesting.
Check theIgnore Whitebox, and then exit theImage Tracewindow.

With the traced image selected, go toObject > Image Trace > Expand.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 28/68

3.How to Incorporate Typography Into a Flyer

Design
The typography for this yer is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle! Well be tting text in the gaps
between the antlers to create a dense type effect towards the top of the yer.

Step 1
Lock theReindeerlayer and create a new layer above it, naming itTypography 1.
Keeping all the different items of text on separate layers will make it easier to tweak
individual parts of the design.

Go to theSwatchespanel and create a newCMYKswatch,C=73 M=11 Y=10 K=9, and

name itBlue.

the text frame to get it just right.

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designanofficechristmaspartyflyercms27477 38/68
04/02/2017 HowtoCreateaStylishOfficeChristmasPartyFlyer

exclamation marks) in its own text frame and adjusting the text to read the phraseeat
drink and be very merry!. Adjust theFont Sizeand text frame positions to get it all
slotting together really well.
