Consciousness seems to be a nearly impossible task of achieving, with many

philosophers attempting to reach as close to it as possible. James Baldwin illustrates

that American citizens may become conscious from challenging societys views through

utilizing repetition, comparing his actions with the teachers and tones both urgent and

strong.

One of the most significant tools he uses to convey his message would be

repetition, emphasizing the importance of the teachers actions. The awareness of the

mind is tainted by the surrounding popular beliefs, usually stemming from the education

system. He repeats how if he were in the shoes of the professors, he would ...suggest

to [them] that the pop culture- as represented, for example, on television and in comic

books and in movies- is based on fantasies created by very ill people, and he must be

aware that these are fantasies that have nothing to do with reality. As of 1963, James

Baldwin was speaking of societys racial bias towards whites, which was very

detrimental to colored citizens rights and mental wellbeing. A teacher to orate that the

worthlessness of African Americans is false and constructed by the leaders of society

could save lives and create drastic positive impact in the community, possibly spreading
to the rest of the nation. In addition, for Baldwin to compare what he would announce to

his students to what the teachers dont expresses the wrongdoing of the educators.

James Baldwin expresses that this issue is needed to be approached

immediately. The urgency in his tone is apparent when speaking about the country

being demolished by segregation and if this country does not find a way to use that

energy, it will be destroyed by that energy. Negative consequences will eventually

come to all American citizens regardless of color if racial discrimination, leaving the

United States of America in ruins. His tone also signified confidence, assuring that

American is not the world and if America is going to become a nation, she must find a

way- and this child must help her to find a way to use the tremendous potential and

tremendous energy which this child represents. Hes confident and hopeful his country

has the ability to angle into a path of reconstruction and equality.

James Baldwins words still impact our country today, and although racial bias

hasnt been eliminated and consciousness hasnt been received completely, our country

has made much progress.
