LAIR OF THE KOBOLD KING

An Adventure for 2-4 Characters of 1-2 Levels

By Aaron Gustwiller

INTRODUCTION

LAIR OF THE KOBOLD KING is an adventure for PITS & PERILS and acts as a
prequel to THE FOGOTTEN TOWER, though it can certainly be played afterwards
if desired. It is intended for starting characters and only uses items and
monsters for the core rulebook.

BACKGROUND

Will all the attention being paid to the recently rediscovered tower it
nearly went unnoticed that there was a nighttime raid on the barns and
sheds in the village by the local troublemaker, "king" Vras of the kobold clan
the Broken Stick. It only came up because they stole the gravedigger's
enchanted shovel. He isn't worried about getting it back, and just wishes that
someone would deal with Vras. If that is done it can be kept by anyone to
retrieves it.

THE KOBOLD'S LAIR

The Kobold's Lair is crudely carved into the side of a large hill with the
walls and floor being of dirt, with the occasional supporting wooden beam. It
smells like dirt and garbage throughout.

1 -- Inside the Lair's entrance are 2 KOBOLD guards. One is currently asleep
and skips the first combat round, with the second attacking the player's when
they enter. AK: 1 (spear) LL: 1/+1 (2 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: S/+1

2 -- This room is the armory and with most of the weapons being too rusted for
use and scattered on the floor; only a shield and short sword are serviceable.

BEFORE AREA 3: There is a PIT TRAP just outside the door to area 3. The first
character to try and open the door falls in and takes 1d3 damage, with the
sound alerting the 3 KOBOLDS in the room.

3 -- This room is the main dining room, with a fire pit in the center of the
room, surrounded by small tables and benches. There are 2 KOBOLDS eating at
one of the tables, and 1 KOBOLD tending the fire. They attack when the
characters enter the room. AK: 1 (club) LL: 1/+1 (2 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: S/+0

4 -- EMPTY
5 -- There is one KOBOLD (AK: 1 (short sword) LL: 1/+1 (2 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: S/+0)
just inside the door, with a GIANT RAT (AK: 1 (bite) LL: 2/+0 (3 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE:
M/+0) on a leash, they attack the first character to enter.

There are several empty cages in the room that are used for the kobold's
giant rats. Searching the room turns of nothing of value.

6 -- This is the sleeping quarters for the kobolds. There are several piles of
straw around the room and a couple of benches and wooden crates. 1 KOBOLD is
asleep in the far right corner. AK: 1 (dagger) LL: 1/+1 (2 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: S/+1.

Searching the room turns up 1000 copper pieces and a lot of valueless junk.

7 -- The door is locked. This room is Vras' private quarters. There is a bed and
table. If searched there is a small chest with 200 silver pieces inside.

8 -- Inside this room is Vras' throne room, and high seat, where VRAS (AK: 1
(shovel) LL: 2/+2 (4 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: S/+1) is currently sitting, with his pet GIANT
RAT (AK: 1 (bite) LL: 2/+0 (5 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: M/+0) at his side. There are also 2
KOBOLD GAURDS in the room. AK: 1 (short swords) LL: 1/+1 (2 HP) ME: 30' (--) SE: S/+0

Searching the room turns up 5 gold pieces and the key to AREA 7 on VRAS, with
some farming tools located behind the throne (shovels, rakes, etc.).

THE LAIR

MAGIC ITEM

The GRAVEDIGGER'S SHOVEL looks like a fairly regular shovel. It was enchanted
long ago to help deal with the undead trouble brought on by Verlamus, and
had been handed down by the gravediggers in the village of Highbrook. It's a
two-handed weapon that gives +1 to attack rolls against the undead.
