INTRODUCTION

1 INTRODUCTION

About these
instructions These instructions describe the procedure for assembling,
commissioning and maintaining the Fife-Symat70G. They
also provide important information relating to proper usage.

These instructions are intended both for the system cons-

tructor and for the operator who intends to use this offset
pivot guide system in his production processes. The instruc-
tions must be read and observed by anyone involved in the
assembly, operation and maintenance of the system.

The instructions must be kept in a safe place and must be

available for reference throughout the service life of the off-
set pivot guide system.

Translation of the original Operating Manual:

This Operating Manual is a translation. The original Opera-
ting Manual was composed in German.

Proper usage The Fife-Symat 70G is a compact offset pivot guide system
(OPG for short) designed for installation in web processing
machinery. A Fife-Tidland GmbH web guide controller is
required for operation of the offset pivot guide system.

The Fife-Symat 70G is used to achieve accurate web guiding

using few space. In addition, it controls the position of mate-
rial web with minimal infeed and discharge lengths.

The Fife-Symat 70G must only be used for its intended pur-
pose and must be kept in flawless technical condition. Fife-
Tidland GmbH should always be consulted before the Fife-
Symat 70B is put into operation.

An optional servo-centre transducer is available for rapid

servo-centring of the offset pivot guide. This ensures that
the offset pivot guide rollers remain parallel to the rollers in
the rest of the system during commissioning and web width
adjustment, and during splicing or threading of the web.

INTRODUCTION

Wire wrapping A total of 4 different wire wrapping types and 4 possible

assembly configurations result in 16 different installation
options.

Caution: Risk of tipping!

The motor and transmission of the linear drive used in the
Fife-Symat 70G are not self-inhibiting.
As a result, there is a risk with installation options 13 to 16
that the weight of the offset pivot guide could cause it to tip
over during manual or de-energised operation !

INTRODUCTION

Operating principle Figure 1.2 shows a web course control system. The Fife-
Symat 70G is aligned parallel to the rollers of the customer's
system. The sensors (3) monitor the web position. When the
material web leaves the target position, the sensors generate
a signal. The web guide controller (2) records this signal and
activates the drive unit, which continues realigning the offset
pivot guide (1) until the web position has been corrected. The
rotational movement is around an axis positioned perpendi-
cular to the assembly frame (6) on the outer edge of the
infeed roller.

Note:
In Figure 1.2. the drive unit required to control the material
web is concealed by the material web.

The components of the friction wheel drive are shown in

Figure7.3 . After replacing the motor, one or two drops of
varifluid should be applied to the motor shaft for startup and
to protect against corrosion (other oils cause slipping and
thereby reduce the service life). As you do this, make certain
that the parts of the break remain free of oil. This will ensure
the functional capability of the friction wheel drive.
Then the friction wheel suspension must be repositioned and
the contact force must be adjusted .

7-5
MAINTENANCE

After you have removed the cover (14) and the set collar (30)
and loosening the screw (15,Figure7.3) the friction wheel
suspension can be replaced. The positioning is described in
the following section.

30 set collar
11 mounting base
36 drive joint
16 friction wheel suspension
21 drive shaft
Figure 7.4: For positioning the drive joint and the friction wheel suspension

Figure7.4 shows the position of drive joint, friction wheel

suspension and set collar. The following table lists the stroke
that depends on dimensions A and B. If the stroke of the
existing Fife-Symat 70G is not listed in the table, dimensions
A and B must be verified before disassembling the drive so
that the factory settings can be reproduced.

Stroke [mm] 13 19 25 31 38 44 51 57

A [mm] 123,5 126,5 129,5 132,5 136,0 139,0 142,5 145,5

B [mm] 57 63 69 75 82 85 95 101

The motor current is measured to set the contact force. To do

this, the friction wheel suspension is prevented from moving
in the direction of the motor (see the arrow in Figure7.4) and
the contact force is modified by adjusting the screw (17,
Figure7.3) in such a manner that the motor current reaches
800 mA 50 mA. The setscrew (29, Figure7.3) will then
secure the screw in place.
