Over the last ten years, western societies have seen close to a
20% rise in the number of children who are overweight. This
essay will discuss some reasons why this has occurred and
examine the consequences of this worrying trend.
The main cause of this problem is poor diet. Over the last decade
there has been a prolific increase in the number of fast food
restaurants. For example, on nearly every high street there is a
MacDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut. The food in
these places has been proven to be very unhealthy, and much of
the advertising is targeted at children, thus ensuring that they
constitute the bulk of the customers of these establishments.
However, it is not only due to eating out, but also the type of diet
many children have at home. A lot of food consumed is processed
food, especially with regards to ready-made meals which are a
quick and easy option for parents who are working hard.
The effects of this have been and will continue to be very serious.
Firstly, there has been a large increase in health related diseases
amongst children, especially diabetes. This debilitating illness
means a child has to be injected with insulin for the rest of their
life. Not only this, very overweight children often experience
bullying from other children, which may affect their mental health.
The negative stigma of being overweight may also affect self-
esteem.

In many parts of the world today there is a profitable
market for products which lighten or whiten peoples skin.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples
from your own experience or knowledge.
However, despite the fact that having whiter skin may improve a
persons self-esteem, these products can have negative effects.
Regarding health, there are reports that people are harming their
skin permanently as some products bought over the counter have
prescription-strength ingredients. For instance, some contain
steroids or toxins which can severely damage the skin and other
parts of the body. In terms of society, there are also detrimental
effects. Such behaviour perpetuates the belief that white is
better than black, and thus those with darker skin may
experience discrimination.

It is likely that one of the most prominent cause giving rise to this
problem is the major change in our lifestyle due to remarkable
advancement and sophistication in technology, which has
considerable impact on our daily life and health. These
advancement comes at a cast with the adverse impact on our
health due to lack of physical activity and laziness in office and
home. At office most of the people suffering from this illness
spend many hours sitting in front of the computer without any
physical activity. Not only this even at home most of us spend
time watching TV and taking rest at their bedroom. Even children
nowadays give preference to playing computer game or chatting
on internet with their friends rather than playing out door sports.
In addition to that the quality of foods which we consumers every
day made the matters worse. These foods, which are easily
available, often contains ingredients that are high in calorie,
cholesterol and fat, while at the same time lack necessary
vitamin, mineral and protein and these factors are taking a toll on
our health.

To begin with, the global scale of the internet means that national
laws are no longer adequate to control what happens online. Take
restrictions on legal reporting, for example. In some countries, the
media is prohibited from revealing details of a defendants past in
case this prejudices a fair trial. However, such restrictions are no
longer enforceable now that information may be freely published
in other countries and accessed by all. The only solution here, it
seems, is to adopt global standards. Since the internet traverses
national borders, the flow of information can only be controlled if
all nations agree on what can and cannot be shared.
