Amazon Entices Indian Enterprises With AWS

Region in Mumbai

At the AWS Summit event at

Mumbai, Andy Jassy, the newly
minted CEO of Amazon Web
Services announced the
immediate availability of the India
Region. Mumbai becomes the 6th
AWS Region in Asia Pacific
bringing the global footprint of
AWS Regions to 13. AWS already
has three edge locations in India
for its Content Delivery Network
(CDN).

Like most of the other regions, the

new AWS Mumbai Region also
consists of two separate
Availability Zones. Availability
Zones are isolated datacenters
within a region that are designed
to be independent of other
Availability Zones. They come
with independent power, cooling,
and physical security, and are
inter-connected via a low latency
network. AWS encourages
customers to architect their
applications to run in multiple
Availability Zones to achieve even
higher fault-tolerance.

The new region supports most of

the AWS services including EC2,
S3, RDS, EMR, Redshift, Route 53
among others. Certain services
like IoT, WorkSpaces, WorkDocs,
and WorkMail are not available at
this point.

According to Amazon, more than

75,000 India-based customers are
already using other AWS Regions.
Having started its India
operations in 2010, AWS now has
offices across major cities in India
to cater to the local businesses. It
has built strong relationships with
the local system integrators
through the APN program. Andy
Jassy mentioned in his keynote
that the number of partners
joining the APN program has
grown over 80 percent in the past
12 months.

During his recent visit to India,

Jeff Bezos, founder, and CEO of
Amazon mentioned that the
investments in India are increased
to $5 billion. He also claimed that
the retail business of Amazon is
generating as many as 45,000
jobs. He also met India's
tech-savvy prime minister, Mr.
Narendra Modi, and promised to
support Digital India initiative.

integrators, independent software

vendors, enterprises, and
startups. Major global technology
companies including Amazon,
Apple, Google, HP, IBM,
Microsoft, Oracle, VMware have
their development centers in
India. Top system integrators
such as Accenture, Infosys,
Cognizant, HCL, and TCS have an
army of consultants focused on
cloud computing. Traditional
Indian ISVs are busy redesigned
their products for SaaS. Many
startups such as Ola Cabs,
Shaadi.com, and Red Bus run
their infrastructure in the cloud.
This phenomenon attracted public
cloud providers to invest in India.
Last year, Microsoft launched
Azure across three locations in
India. Google is also expected to
announce a local datacenter in the
sub-continent.

With increased investments in

India, AWS hopes to attract local
enterprises, public sector
companies, and government
institutions to its infrastructure.
Microsoft is already offering
Azure, Office 365, and other cloud
services from datacenters in India
region. Enterprises in India now
have the choice of cloud platforms
in the form of Azure and AWS.
