WhatisNeuromuscularTherapy?

Neuromusculartherapy(NMT)isaprecise,thoroughexaminationandtreatmentofthebodyssofttissuesusingregionallyoriented
protocolsthataretaughtinastepbystepprocess.Thesetimetested,handsontechniquesarebuiltuponasciencebasedfoundation
andguidedbyclinicalevidence.NMTcanintegratewellintoanypracticesettingandisfrequentlyincludedinmainstreammedicine,
integrativemedicine,chiropracticcare,andmultidisciplinaryclinicsworldwide.

Inaddition,NMTconsidersperpetuatingfactorsthatmaybeassociatedwiththeclientscomplaints.Forexample,whenaclient
presentswithshoulderpain,theupperextremityprotocolwillbeusedastheprimaryexamination.Inadditiontothemusclesdirectly
crossingtheshoulderjoint,musclesthatattachtheshouldergirdletothetorsowouldbeincludedalongwithstepstohelpinsure
mobilityofthescapula.Dysfunctionswithinthearm,forearmandhandoftenproducecompensationpatternsinshouldermovement,so
examinationofthoseregionsshouldbeincluded.Sinceinnervationtotheshoulderexitsthespineatthecervicalregion,mobilityand
musclesoftheneckwillbeconsideredcompressionorentrapmentofthenervesservingtheshouldershouldberuledout.

Perpetuatingfactorscanalsoincludeshoulderjointpathologies,posturalpositioning,habitsofuse,nutritionalcomponents,emotional
wellbeing,allergies,neuroexcitants,neurotoxins,andothercoreelementsthatcanmasqueradeasmyofascialpainanddysfunction.Duetothediversenatureofperpetuatingfactors,
astuteNMTpractitionersbuildabroadnetworkofhealthcareprovidersforreferralofthoseclientswhosesymptomssuggestredflagwarningsorunderlyingpathologies.

Mostfactorsthatcausepainanddysfunctioncanbeeasilygroupedunderthreegeneralheadingsofbiomechanical,biochemical,andpsychosocialfactors,withtheinterfacebetween
thesebeingprofoundlyrelated.Mostpractitionersapplystrategiesfromonlyoneofthesecategories,oftenresultinginimprovementthatplateausbeforefullrecovery.However,a
synergisticeffectoftenwithsignificantreliefisobtainedwhenallthreecategoriesareaddressed.Thismayrequiredamultidisciplinaryapproach.
NMTassessmentsandexaminationsprimarilyaddress

ischemia(tighttissuewithreducedbloodflow)
myofascialtriggerpoints(hypersensitivepointswithinmusclesthatgiverisetoreferredphenomena,includingpain)
neuralentrapment(pressureonnervesbymusclesandothersofttissues),andnervecompression(pressureonnervesbyosseousandotherboneliketissues,suchascartilage
ordiscs).
posturalassessment(assessmentofthepositionofthebodyasawhole)
anddysfunctionalgaitpatterns(mannerofmovementwhenwalking)
withconstantconsiderationformanyotherperpetuatingfactors,suchashydration,nutrition,breathingpatterns,andpsychologicstress.

NMTishighlyeffectiveforclientswhopresentwithchronicpainandisoftensuccessfulinreducingoreliminatingevenlongstandingpainfulconditions.Someofthetechniquescanalso
beappliedtoacuteinjuriesandforpostsurgicalcaremanyhelptoimproveperformanceinsportordanceandtopreventinjuriesduetotheseactivities.
