Family and Lifestyle 4 When I look upon this month it reminds me of the importance of the Sunnah which our
beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw) bestowed upon our lives. Yes! it is the month of the
Special 5 birth of the Holy Prophet (saw), but it should be looked at as a reminder of what our
beloved Prophet (saw) came to do for us. This Sunnah is the essence of our livelihood and

Rabi-Ul-Awwal and
Rabi-Ul-Thani
R abi-Ul-Awwal is the third month of the
Islamic Calendar. The meaning of the word
“Rabi-Ul-Awwal” is the first month of spring.
It is the most significant month in the Islamic
History, because humanity has been blessed in
this month by the birth of the Holy Prophet
Muhammad (saw) who was sent as a mercy for all
and departed from this world 63 years later.
Before the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad
(saw), not only the Arabian Peninsula, but also the
so-called civilized nations of Rome and Persia were
drowned in the darkness of ignorance, superstitions,
oppression and unrest. The Holy Prophet (saw) came with the eternal truth “Tawheed” (Oneness of Allah), the only faith
which provides a firm basis for the real concepts of knowledge, justice and peace. It was this faith which delivered
humanity from ignorance and superstitions and spread the light of true knowledge all over the world.
Many other significant events took place in Rabi-Ul-Awwal such as:
♦ The Holy Prophet (saw) migrated from Makkah to Madinah Munawwarrah.
♦ The battle of Buwaat took place in the year 2 AH.
♦ Battle of Saf’waan also took place in the year 2 AH.
♦ Abu Bakr’ (ra) was appointed Caliph.

R abi-Ul-Thani is the fourth month of the Islamic Calendar and is also known as Rabi-Ul-Akhir. The meaning of the
word “Rabi-Ul-Thani” is the second month of spring. There is no significant happenings that have been mentioned
during this month.

What’s been happening around the Centre?

2007 Ladies Rejuvenation Day
What a relaxing day it was! The Rejuvenation Day happens every year around this time
and is purely a day set aside for ladies wishing to give themselves a break and unwind.
We had such a wonderful time rejuvenating our bodies. The ladies enjoyed pampering
sessions such as facials, foot spa’s and hand treatments as well as a visit from a top
hairdresser. Not to forget we also had a henna applying specialist who gave the ladies
a little something to take home to the husbands. The day was so relaxing that we
couldn’t carry ourselves home.
On behalf of the GIYC Ladies Shura “we would like to thank all the ladies” who
contributed their services to this special day. Without your contribution this day would
not have been as special as it was. For those who missed out, you really missed a great day.
Hope to see you at 2008 Rejuvenation Day, Insha Allah.

Prophet) received the news of his grandson’s birth with joy. He took the newborn to the Ka-bah 1 cup seeded black olives

Believing his grandson would grow up to be highly praised, Abdul Muttalib named him
Muhammad, which means “he who is praised”. In keeping with the Arab tradition, he then
shaved the baby’s head and circumcised him on the seventh day. Abdul Muttalib then invited
his fellow-Makkan’s to a feast. Hence we have the (Aqiqah—sacrifice of the animal).
Muhammad (saw) was first nursed by his mother, then by Umm Ayman, (his fathers slave).
Thuwaybah, the slave of Muhammad’s uncle Abu Lahab, also nursed the infant. At that time
Thuwaybah was also nursing her own child, Masrooh, as well as Hamzah bin Abdul Muttalib

DID YOU KNOW?

A tension headache is a condition involving pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck, usually associated
with muscle tightness in these areas. Tension headaches result from the contraction (tensing) of neck and scalp
muscles. One cause of this muscle contraction is a response to stress, depression, head injury, or anxiety. Any
activity that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time without moving can cause a headache.
Such activities include typing or use of computers, fine work with the hands, and use of a microscope. Sleeping
in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal position may also trigger this type of headache.
Enough sleep and rest, or massage of sore muscles can help reduce the chance that a headache will occur.
Hot or cold showers may relieve a headache for some people.

Celebrating the Prophet’s (saw) Birthday

Praise be to Allah! Firstly, Muhammad (saw) is the Messenger of Allah who was sent to all of mankind, the one through
whom Allah leads people from darkness into light, from misguidance to guidance.
Secondly, acts of worship in Islam are based on an important principle being that no one is permitted to worship Allah
in any way except for that which Allah has prescribed in His Book or which was taught by His Messenger Muhammad
(saw) (the Sunnah). Whoever worships Allah by doing something that Allah and His Messenger have not enjoined, Al-
lah will not accept it from them. The Prophet (saw) told us of this, as it was narrated in a hadith by ‘Aa’ishah’ (may Al-
lah be pleased with her) that: The Messenger of Allah (swt) said: “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that
is not part of it will have it rejected”. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Kitaab al-Sulh, 2499)
Acts of worship include festivals. Allah has prescribed two festivals or Eids for us to celebrate and it is not permissible
for us to celebrate any others. The Prophet (saw) said: “Beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an
Innovation (bid’ah) and every innovation is a going-astray”. (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi and others)
People must always follow the Quran and Sunnah, even when they do not entirely understand the issues of benefit and
harm that are involved. There is nothing in the Quran to say that we should celebrate the birthday of the Prophet (saw).
The Prophet (saw) himself (did not do this or command anyone to do it, either during his lifetime or after his death.
Indeed, he told them not to exaggerate about him as the Christians had exaggerated about Jesus (ra). He said: “Do not
exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the son of Maryam. I am only a slave, so say, “The slave of Allah and His Mes-
senger”. (Al-Bukhaari). What has been reported is that the Prophet (saw) made the day of his birth a day of worship,
which is different to celebration. He was asked about fasting on Mondays and he said: “That is the day on which I was born
and the day on which I was entrusted with the Mission or when I was first given Revelation”. (Reported by Muslim, Al-Nisaa’i
and Abu Dawood)
Hence we do not celebrate this day, in obedience to the command of Allah (swt) who has commanded us to follow the
commands of his Prophet (saw). Allah (swt) says (interpretation of the meaning): “And whatsoever the Messenger
(Muhammad) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)” [al-Hashr 59:7]. The Prophet (saw) said: “I urge you
to adhere to my Sunnah [way] and the way of the Rightly-Guided Caliphas. Adhere to it and cling tightly to it, and beware of newly-
invented matters [in religion], for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going-astray”. (Narrated by
Abu Dawood, al-Sunnah, 3991; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, no. 3851)
Conclusion: Brothers and Sisters in Islam, celebrating the Prophet’s birthday was NOT prescribed by Allah (swt) or
by the Messenger of Allah (saw), so it is NOT permissible for Muslims to celebrate his birthday. We do this in obe-
dience to the command of Allah and the command of his Prophet.
Are you challenging Allah? In celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (saw), you are saying to Allah that the religion
is not perfect. How is this so? You have added something to the religion which we were not informed about either
through the Quran or Sunnah. In celebrating this day you are also saying to Allah that you know better as to how to
show your love for the Prophet (saw). You are saying to Allah that you will follow tradition and your forefathers
instead. The instructions are clear as Allah states in the Quran: “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My
favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”. [al-Maida 5:3] “He who obeys the messenger obeys Allah”. [al-
Nisa 4:80] They say:“Nay we shall follow the ways of our fathers. What! Even though their fathers were void of wisdom and guid-
ance?” [al-Baqarah 2:170]
Origin of Moulood: Many Muslims do not realise that the origin of Moulood is from the Fatimites (357-567) in Egypt
who actually celebrated the death of our beloved Prophet (saw).
Excuses, excuses….that are NOT valid! Some people are afraid not to upset their family or to go against traditions.
Aren’t you afraid of Allah? The most common excuses being: ‘We do it to show our love for the Prophet’; ‘It brings
people together’; ‘Our parents and grandparents have been doing it for years’; ‘Many Muslims in all parts of the world
practice it, how can so many Muslims be wrong’. You will be answerable to Allah, so you decide!
We ask Allah (swt) to guide us to the Straight Path. And Allah (swt) knows best.

Everyday Duahs
O Allah! Do not seize us for our errors. Do not burden us with
such heavy duties as has been placed on people who preceded us.
Lord do not require us to bear a burden which is beyond our power.
Overlook our sins, grant us forgiveness and have mercy on us.
Ameen.

Fatawa
On wearing a beard.
I have a thick beard that grows quickly and profusely, a fact that prompts me to trim it from time to time. Is
that lawful? I heard some people say that it is absolutely unlawful (haram) to cut even a slightest part of the
beard. Please clarify this issue in light of the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah.
The beard is a beautiful and dignifying feature that Allah (swt) has bestowed upon man. Growing and wearing a beard is an act of
worship if done in good faith and for the sake of Allah (swt). In addition, wearing a beard is an act of following the example of the
Prophet Muhammad (saw). Seerah (Islamic History) tells us that the Holy Prophet used to wear a beard as well as asked those
around him to grow it. There are several hadith, that instructs Muslim men to grow and wear a beard. Some of these hadith are:
The Prophet (saw) said: “Do not become of the polytheists; spare your beards and trim your moustaches”. (Bukhaari and Muslim).
“Cut your moustaches off and spare your beards” (Muslim). “He who doesn’t trim his moustache is not of us.
[not following our tradition]. (Muslim)

Scholars are in agreement that growing and wearing a beard is a legal obligation upon men, and that complete shaving of the beard
is haram (unlawful) and a sinful act (that is if one shaves it for no excuse), except for illness or because of circumstances that are
totally out of his control.
The scholars are also in agreement that the command of wearing and growing a beard should not be construed to mean that one is
to leave his beard to grow indefinitely and let it fall in disarray. This command entails that one should let his beard grow to a
reasonable length and acceptable size.
The Prophet (saw) said: “Do the opposite of what Al-Mushrikun do. Grow abundantly the beards and cut the moustaches short”.
Whenever Ibn Umar (ra) performed Hajj or Umrah, he used to hold his beard with his hand and cut whatever remained outside his
hold. (Bukhaari)
They are also in agreement that the cheeks and neck are not part of the recommended beard, so it is lawful to shave the hair that
grows on these two areas.

Finally, I advise my brothers to reveres ones commands regardless of how insignificant they may appear, because this reverence,
respect and obedience are indicative of one’s true faith in Allah (swt). Allah knows best.

Teach Me a Hadith
Treating women nicely.
Narrated Abu Hurairah (ra) Allah Messenger (saw) said:
“Treat women nicely, for a woman is created from a rib
and the most curved portion of the rib is the upper
portion. So if you should try to straighten it, it will break,
but if you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked. So treat
women nicely”.
[Bukhari: volume 4 hadith 3331]

Makkah and Madinah

Narrated Anas bin Malik (ra): When the mountain of Uhud came in the sight of
Allah’s Messenger (saw) he said: “This is a mountain that loves us and is loved by us.
O Allah! Ibrahim made Makkah a sanctuary, and I make (the area) in between these
two mountains (of Al Madinah) a sanctuary”.
[Bukhari: volume 4 hadith 3367]
