Lesson: Life in the future

Type of lesson: practising the speaking skills

Skills: speaking, reading, listening

Time: 50 minutes

Methods: The Communicative Approach, The direct method

Techniques: brainstorming, discussion, lockstep, groups, pairs.

Materials: posters, pictures, board, notebooks

Functions: giving opinions: - agreeing and disagreeing

- listening for specific information

- justifying arguments

General aim:

The goal of teaching speaking skills is to improve communicative efficiency.


Specific aims: By learning these skills the students will be able to:

Avoid confusion in the message due to faulty pronunciation, grammar, or


vocabulary.
To provide opportunities for contextualized free speaking practice.
To encourage learners to engage with and respond to a given situation through role-
play
To develop higher level thinking skill by encouraging learners to consider the wider
implications of the information contained in a picture/text.
Clarify their meaning or ask for confirmation of their own understanding.
Politely interrupt to express his/her opinion.
Practice using all of the language they know in situations that resemble real settings.
Develop their sociolinguistic competence.

Assumptions:

- Vocabulary related to inventions and human life in the future.

- The correct use of Future Simple for making predictions about life in the future.

-Expressions used to justify arguments and to give opinions about inventions, human
development and/or people.

Expected Problems to students:


There are a number of problems which the students can face while learning this skill which are
as following:
Learners may have difficulty in understanding the instructions given by teacher.
All the learners may not be able to answer all the comprehension questions.
Some learners will be unable to utter a dialogue completely and accurately.
Students sometimes find difficulties while speaking as they think much about
grammar. They think they must speak grammatically correct all the time. It
disturbs them to speak, so most of them prefer to remain silent instead of
answering in a wrong sentence.
Some learners may feel shy and never give answers in target language.

Steps of the lesson


Warm- up (5 minutes)

The teacher greets the students and asks them about the science fiction movies they
have seen and the differences between the movie and real life today, in order to introduce the
topic of life in the future.

Students try to answer the questions, discuss and tell their personal experiences related to the
topic.

Interaction: T-Ss.

Activity 1(10 minutes)

The teacher announces the title of the lesson and shows some pictures to the students. They
have to look at the pictures and decide which of those represent objects that a few years ago
seemed like coming from a distant future.

Students may write a few notes about their opinions regarding to technology nowadays.

Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T.

Activity 2(15 minutes)

The teacher asks students to prepare blank strips of paper and to write a prediction about the
future. Once they finish, the teacher collects the strips and pins them around the topic Future
facts.

In groups, the students discuss about the ones they think will probably come true. Each group
agrees on one prediction and they justify their choice.

In groups, they have to sustain their opinions and give arguments.

Activity 3(15 minutes)

The teacher proposes a role play and gives the students cards, in order to determine what role
will have each student in the group.

Then, the teacher asks each group to create an interview with a visitor from 2100, each
interviewer has to ask two questions and write down the answers.

Students will interview the guest asking questions about what life is like in 2100, and each group
will write a different interview.
After reading, the students will write on the board the best answers.

Activity 4(10 minutes)

The teacher asks the students, in groups, to write and to draw an advertisement for an object
from the future.

Students can ask questions about the object they are interested in, interrupting politely their
colleagues if they need to know more about a specific detail or encouraging them to tell more
about a different object.

Students read their texts and they all have to vote for the best sold object, except for those
who created the advertisement. The most voted object wins.

Interaction: group work.

Extra activity

The teacher shows students some pictures of different gadgets asking if they feel like testing
them, also if they consider them useful for future life.

Homework

Students are going to prepare a journal entry about a day spent in the future.

Activity 3
One of the students will act as a time traveler using the time machine he
has visited your class from the year 2100. The guest will talk about life in 2100
using his own imagination.
The rest of the group will interview the guest asking questions about what
life is like in 2100.
The teacher cuts out the cards and places the cards on the table face down,
so that the roles cannot be seen. The students from each group choose a role thus
dividing them between guests and interviewers.
