Content of this This chapter provides an overview for each QuesCom fax feature.
chapter
This chapter contains the following sections:
Voice Fax This feature allows you to provide only One Number to your customers
overview to receive voice calls and fax. Voice calls and fax are received on the
same DDI number.
The QuesCom Gateway automatically answers the call and listens for a
calling fax machine.
If the QuesCom Gateway detects a calling fax machine, it receives
the fax, converts it in a TIFF format and sends this TIFF by email as an
attachment. As a result, you receive all your fax in your standard
mailbox. The Email contains theses information:
The phone number of the sender,
The name of the recipient,
Date and time of the message,
A subject: A fax has been sent from <sender number> to
<recipient number>,
A body: a standard message that can be configured,
A TIFF image of the fax as attached document.
If no fax is detected, your phone will ring and the phone call will be
established.
User Case: Anne from Press Kiosk, would like to place an order for 50 calculators
XP412. She faxes the order to Carole onto her personal phone number.
The QuesCom Gateway intercepts the call and differentiates a voice
call from a fax call. It processes faxes whilst leaving the line free. Carole
is directly emailed the purchased orders as attachments.
Definition For an installation in ISDN environment, this feature is the ISDN Voice Fax.
The One Number is both your office phone number and your fax number.
Faxes sent from legacy fax machines connected to the PSTN network are received by
email.
Definition For an installation in a VoIP environment, this feature is the T38 Voice Fax.
The One number is both your IP phone and your fax number.
Faxes sent from legacy fax machines connected to the PSTN network are received by
email.
Fax to Email For this feature, all Fax received on a dedicated DDI number are sent to a unique
mailbox. The QuesCom Gateway automatically answers the call, waits for the calling
overview
fax carrier, converts the fax into a TIFF image and sends this TIFF image as email
attachment. As a result, you receive all your fax in your standard mailbox. Like for the
Voice fax feature, the Email contains theses information:
The phone number of the sender,
The name of the recipient,
Date and time of the message,
A subject: A fax has been sent from <sender number> to <recipient number>,
A body: a standard message that can be configured,
An image TIFF of the fax as attached document.
Difference with This feature differs from the Voice Fax feature in the way that no voice calls can be
established on this line (DDI number).
the Voice Fax
Benefits As fax is stored into a dedicated mailbox, the confidentiality is guaranteed. Fax can be
forwarded, stored, organized. Fax is no longer lost and paperwork is eliminated.
User Case Visit Paris company has 4 dedicated lines for fax. Theses faxes number are well known
by partners and used to confirm organized trips. Robert, the IT, wants to improve
employee productivity by reducing time consumed by manual faxing and reduce cost
due to fax machine, paper and ink cartridges.
Definition For an installation in an ISDN environment, this feature is the ISDN Fax to Email.
The dedicated number will be a DDI (Direct Dialing In) number.
Configuration Go to section 3.1 if the QuesCom Gateway is connected between the PSTN and the
PBX (pass-through mode),
Go to section 3.2 if the QuesCom Gateway is connected to the PBX on a dedicated
ISDN connection,
And follow instructions detailed step by step.
T38 Fax to For an installation in a VoIP environment, this feature is the T38 Fax to Email.

The dedicated number will be an IP phone number.
Definition
Configure the Go to section 3.3 and follow instructions detailed step by step in order to install this
Gateway feature.
ISDN to T38 Faxes coming from the PSTN network are handling in real time by the QuesCom
Fax overview gateway and sent to T38 fax machines.
The T38 Fax Real Time feature allows:
receiving T38 fax,
converts them to T30 fax
Send them over the ISDN network.
Benefits The T38 Real Time allows cost saving when fax must be send for a long distance.
Moreover, for companies using a full IP installation (IP phones and IP fax machines); this
feature allows still receiving fax from the telecom operator (over ISDN).
This solution is also appropriate for companies that wants to:
keep an investment composed of fax machine connected to a PBX
Have the capability to send T38 fax on a VoIP network provider.
User Case Rob, the IT of the remote office in Dublin must by a new fax machine. As the remote
office is installed in a full IP environment, Rob will buy a T38 fax machine.
He will connect this fax machine by IP to the QuesCom gateway located in the central
office trough a Virtual Private Network.
By this way, all faxes coming from the ISDN network and received in the central office
to the destination the remote office will be send by IP and received directly on the IP
fax machine
Configure the Go to chapter 3.4 to configure the QuesCom Gateway for this feature and follow
Gateway instructions detailed step by step.
Print to Fax With this feature, you can send a fax from any application (with printing capability) of
your workstation to a legacy fax connected to the PSTN network.
overview
Benefits All representatives can receive their faxes at the same time. Confidentiality of faxes is
guaranteed. Any application that can print a document can also send it directly as a
fax!
User Case The architect John, need to fax his last design made on its drawing software. With the
QuesCom Print To Fax Solution, he doesnt need to first print on paper his design and
then fax it with a fax machine. He just has to print his document on a virtual fax printer.
He will be asked immediately the number of the recipient and the fax will be sent to the
PSTN.
Print to fax The QuesCom Fax solution for Print to Fax is declined into several possibilities:
support
Send fax from:
the Virtual Printer Driver,
The Fax Service Provider.
And send fax to :
an ISDN environment (Print to ISDN Fax)
a VoIP environment (Print to T38 Fax in)
The QuesCom Virtual Printer Driver versus the QuesCom Fax Service
Provider:
With the QuesCom Virtual Printer Driver, you can fax any document.
This is not the case with the QuesCom Fax Service Provider that allows
you to fax only Microsoft Office documents.
With the QuesCom Fax Service Provider, you can send faxes
simultaneously to several recipients, managing by this way fax-mailing.
This is not the case for the QuesCom Virtual Printer Driver that allows
only sending one document to one recipient.
Overview With the QuesCom Virtual Printer Driver, you can send by fax any file, just by clicking
from the application used to print it.
For the end-user, the mechanism is like for using a local printer driver. He just has to
provide the fax number of the recipient.
How does it Internally, the Virtual Printer Driver will transform the document in a TIFF image and send
work? this image by Email to the QuesCom Gateway.
On receiving this Email, the QuesCom Gateway will extract the TIFF file and the fax
number of the recipient and will send the fax, using ISDN or IP connectivity.

10. Appendix
In this example, we use a specific numbers DDI number on the Cisco voice system and
dedicate them as a fax number for a specific user.
We use a range of DDI numbers that we translate to extensions 250x. (2500 to 2509).
For example: E.164 number 015454202 has to be translated to 2502, and so on.
Add also the following dial-peer to route the voice and fax calls toward the QuesCom
Gateway:
Note: We need the incoming called-number . command so that calls from QuesCom
(for outbound fax for example) hit this dial-peer to receive the appropriate service to get
across the packet network (fax protocol T.38).

using a dedicated ISDN line
Call/Fax flow Below, a diagram of the voice and fax call flow when the QuesCom Gateway is
description connected to the PBX using a dedicated ISDN PRI or BRI line.
The fax or voice call is initiated from the PSTN network and received by the corporate
PBX.
The PBX must be configured to redirect to the QuesCom Gateway all calls to DDI
numbers for which fax feature is to be supported.
For a fax (orange flow):
the QuesCom Gateway accepts the call and detects calling fax machine,
receives the fax and sends the acknowledgment to the fax sender,
generates a TIFF image and attaches it to an Email,
sends the email to the SMTP server, with the recipients email address as destination,
The email will be received on the user workstation using the standard email
client.
For a voice call (green flow) :
The QuesCom Gateway accepts the call and determine that it is not originated by a
fax machine,
Redirects the voice call to the PBX,
The call will be handled normally by the PBX (terminated to legacy phone
3333 in the schema).

The fax is initiated from the PSTN network using the standard T.30 protocol. The IPBX
converts it to T.38 and routes fax to the QuesCom Gateway.
The IPBX must be configured to redirect T.38 faxes to the QuesCom Gateway (Orange
flow):
the QuesCom Gateway detects the fax,
receives the fax and sends the acknowledgment,
generates a TIFF image and attach the TIFF image to an Email,
sends the email to the SMTP server with the email address of the
recipient in the To field.
The email will be received on the user workstation.
