I tried to create a balanced schedule, as balanced literacy and math portions are very important to meet
the needs of you and the students. I put literacy in the morning because you can start the day with an
independent literacy task written on the board, students have something to do right away, coming inside
from the bell until morning announcements. Then after recess would be science or social studies. My idea
would be to have science for half the year, then move to social studies for the later half. This way, you can
cover the subject more in depth and make cross-curricular connections throughout the day without
jumping around and fitting in all of the subjects in one week. Followed by lunch, students kick-start the
afternoon with math with no interruptions. I put Gym/Health and Music/Drama at the end of the day
because it can allow for wiggle room to complete a more important task in a core subject if there was an
interruption, and you can move the classroom outdoors when the weather is nice or if the students are
having an off day.

Fridays schedule is a little bit different. Students start the day with a math graphing question / problem
solving question on the board that ties into the science lesson being taught afterwards. Just like the
literacy task on Monday-Thursday mornings, students have something to do right away when they come in
from the morning bell until announcements. After first recess students move into language arts, followed
by a full hour for art. Art can be tied into the science or language arts lesson. There is no math block
scheduled for Friday because there are enough math blocks to cover the content during the week, and the
day starts with a cross-curricular math question.
