Dear Families,

Enclosed are the registration forms for the 2010-11 academic year for students entering
grades K- 3rd. Please read all of the materials carefully and return the forms as soon
as possible to Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel with a check for payment (432 Scotland
Road, South Orange, NJ 07079).

The first day of Religious School is Sunday, September 26th. School is in session from
9:00 am to 11:30 am. Please refer to the Religious School calendar on our website at
www.tsti.org (click on the Lifelong Learning tab followed by the school tab) for the
complete schedule for the year. We are thrilled to announce the return of the magnetic
calendar which will be sent home on the first day of school for you to use as a quick
reference tool throughout the year.

This year, our first day of school will be a unique, once in a lifetime experience for our
students. In addition to our regular first day excitement we will also have the opportunity
to celebrate the conclusion of our L’dor Vador Torah writing project. The entire
congregation is invited to this meaningful end to a wonderful project. In preparation of
this day, our students helped to decorate a special huppah for the ceremony. We hope
that you will join your children to make it a fun family and community-wide celebration.

We are pleased that you will be joining us for an inspiring year of Jewish learning at the
Linda and Rudy Slucker Religious School and we want to share with you a number of
exciting changes happening during the 2010-11 academic year.

MICROSTEPS
MicroSteps is a simple e-tool that enables school staff and parents to easily
communicate, as well as access all potential school items of interest from one location.
Parents are able to download and print event notices, newsletters, messages from the
staff, as well as pictures taken during class and special programs. This new tool will
further improve communications while ensuring the safety of our students through this
password-protected site.

NEW HEBREW PLACEMENT

Students in the 3rd- 6th grades will be grouped by their level of Hebrew proficiency
based on feedback provided by their teachers (exceptions may be made at the Director’s
discretion in extraordinary circumstances). A major advantage of this new system is that
it will allow our teachers to better direct lessons towards the specific Hebrew ability of
the students in each class. In addition, by placing students with peers at a similar level,
students will likely feel more comfortable, confident and more willing to participate.

GREENING OUR CURRICULUM

TSTI has been selected by Greenfaith to participate in the Greening Reform Judaism
Pilot Program over the next two years. The Religious School will partner with our senior
staff, clergy, and TSTI Green Team to learn to see the natural blessings in our world.

432 Scotland Road, South Orange, NJ 07079, 973-763-3793, www.tsti.org
The theme of Creation will be weaved throughout every grade level curriculum with
students exploring Judaism's connection with the environment. Jewish texts, mitzvah
projects and innovative programming are all part of this new initiative. We also look
forward to studying outdoors when weather permits. Students will help design and create
our own special TSTI prayer garden for the entire community to enjoy.

HEBREW CENTER (Hamercaz)

Technology is an intrinsic part of education today. Laptops are now available for use in
our new Hebrew learning center (HaMercaz). Students will also have the benefit of using
MP3 players and other hi-tech tools to help with their Hebrew studies. All students will
have the opportunity to visit HaMercaz during Religious School hours.

B’LAY VAV PROGRAM

The B’ lay Vav program that provides students with special needs with one-on-one
assistance with Hebrew will be moved upstairs to a more spacious and better equipped
room. Please contact the office if you would like more information about our special
needs program.

YOUTH LIBRARY
We have created an additional space for our students to check out books, study and
conduct research for Jewish studies projects. This is also a fantastic new room for our
younger students to visit during school hours to explore our wonderful collection of
Jewish literature. Students will be able to lounge on our comfortable cushions and a new
rug while enjoying a book.

LIBRARY BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB

Parents will have the opportunity to enroll their child in the Library Birthday Book Club for
a donation of $18.00. Shortly before your child’s birthday we will invite your child to visit
the library to choose a book from a selection of brand new books. A bookplate inscribed
with your child’s name and birthday will be placed inside the book and added to our
library collection. Your child will have the honor of being the first to borrow the book.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

The Linda and Rudy Slucker Religious School is partnering with The Iris Family Center
for Early Childhood Education to collect Box Tops. Please clip the Box Top coupons off
of your regularly purchased items. The proceeds from the Box Tops will be used to
purchase items for the Religious School and Preschool.

If you have any questions please email me at pkutten@tstinj.org or call 973-763-3793.

Warm regards,

Pia Kutten, Director

TSTI MEMBERS: PLEASE CONSIDER BRIDGING THE GAP
Our Religious School operates at a deficit. Tuition payments cover less than 80% of the
cost to run the school, including teachers, books, materials, programming and facilities.
The gap between tuition payments and the actual cost of providing a Jewish education is
funded through the Temple’s annual operating budget. The Temple subsidizes the cost
of educating our members’ children because teaching and instilling a love of Judaism in
our children is at the core of our communal obligations.

As in prior years, we are asking that those among us who are financially able to do so,
please increase their religious school payment to “Bridge the Gap” by covering all or a
portion of the subsidy the Temple would otherwise provide for their children. As with last
year, this year the need for Bridge the Gap contributions is particularly necessary. Given
the ongoing weak economy, we expect that many more families than usual will require
tuition support to keep their children in school. Bridge the Gap contributions help us
keep our religious school doors open to all.

We ask that you please help us Bridge the Gap – at a level that you are financially able,
or with a special gift – by checking the box below and entering the amount.
