The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a historical fiction book written from the
point of view of Amir. Amir a Pashtun is writing the book as an adult and talks about his
childhood with his best friend Hassan who is a Hazara. Pashtuns and Hazaras are not
getting along during this period of time in Afghanistan. Pashtuns are favored by the
government while Hazaras are looked down upon. This conflict affects the relationship
of Hassan and Amir throughout the book. Amir is embarrassed of Hassan being his
friend because Hassan is a Hazara. Amir leaves Afghanistan due to the violence
happening and leaves Hassan. Events that took place during their childhood still haunt
Amir as an adult. One day one of Amirs old friends Rahim Khan calls him from Pakistan.
Rahim Khan calls Amir to tell him that he is sick and that their is a way for Amir to be
good again. Amir who was in California at the time of this phone call goes back to
Afghanistan where he goes on a journey to make things right between Hassan and
himself.
1) Where does the story take place? Why is the setting important to the story?
Most of the book takes place in Afghanistan which is important to the story
because of the conflicts happening during this time. The two main characters Amir who
is a pashtun and Hassan who is a hazara are best friends. But in Afghanistan Pashtuns
and Hazaras do not get along. Hazaras are looked down upon while Pashtuns are
praised and this conflict affects the way Hassan is treated by Amir and others in his
community. Because Hassan is a hazara he goes through some traumatic events as a
kid and eventually dies due to the taliban.
