SUMMER-SPECIFIC HEALTH TIPS
BY MELISSA ERICKSON | MORE CONTENT NOW
Summer finds us all spending more time outdoors and that often includes our pets. Be wary that summer fun
exposes your dog or cat to heat and health hazards.Enjoy the summer and get outside with your pets, said
veterinarian Edward Schettino, vice president of animal welfare and veterinary services for the Animal Rescue
League of Boston. Make sure they are protected. It is safer for your pets and safer for your entire family.
Talk to your vet to find out which diseases your pet should be protected against and come up with a plan together.
of oral and topical medications make these medical issues 100
percent preventable. You should talk to your veterinarian to find
out which preventative is best for your pet and your specific needs.
Prescription preventatives are generally safer and more effective
than over-the-counter; again, you should speak with your veteri-
narian, Schettino said.
CHEMICALS
When it comes to weed killers or pest maintenance in your yard, it
is better to err on the side of caution. If you use a yard service you
should let them know what type of pets you have and ask them for
their recommendations. If you do it yourself, read the label carefully
and store the containers safely away from your pets.
HEAT
When pets spend more time outdoors they are more prone to
infectious disease, being hit by cars and sports injuries, Schettino
said. Pets are also at risk for heat stroke. Be aware of the signs of
heat stroke, including excessive panting, dark or bright red tongue,
sticky or dry tongue, staggering or stupor, and seek veterinary at-
tention immediately.
And please dont leave your pet in your car unattended. Dogs
can die of heat stroke within minutes, Schettino said. Even with
the temperature outside around 70 degrees, it can get above 100
degrees in the car. If you see a dog in a car unattended, please alert
your local police or fire department. The dogs life can depend on it.
PESTS
While bug bites are a pain for people, for dogs and cats theyre
more than just bothersome. Ticks, fleas and mosquitoes not only
cause skin irritations but also transmit diseases to both dogs and
cats, Schettino said. Depending on where you live in the country,
different diseases are more common. Some of these vector-borne
diseases can be life-threatening if medical care is not sought after
symptoms develop.
Dogs and cats should be protected from fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and
intestinal parasites such as roundworms, whipworms, hookworms
and coccidia. Some of these intestinal parasites can be transmitted
to humans. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm disease to dogs and
cats and can be fatal. Fleas transmit a variety of blood-borne diseases
as do ticks, the most well-known being Lyme disease.
Prevention is not only cheaper than treating illnesses caused by
bugs and parasites, its also better for you and your pet. A variety

Honeoye Lake V I S I T H I S TO R I C
BLOOMFIELD
Modern fisheries management at Honeoye Lake began with the placement of seasons,
bag limits and size limits on gamefish. Records indicate that Honeoye was first stocked
with walleye around the turn-of-the-century. Today, the co-dominant sport species are
walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and chain pickerel with walleye the only
species stocked (8.7 million fry annually) into the lake by the DEC.
Honeoye is a highly regarded fishing lake. In addition to its excellent sportfish
opportunities, the lake also supports an outstanding panfish fishery for bluegill,
pumpkinseed, yellow perch and black crappie. Current management emphasis for the
lake is to maintain a relatively high density of predator species, to control the abundant
panfish and newly established alewife populations. Periodic fishery surveys are conducted
to monitor fish populations. An ongoing angler diary cooperator program for sportfish
provides DEC fisheries staff with useful data on population trends.
Public access sites include the Honeoye Lake Public Boat Launch, located at the SE corner
