Mutton busters hang on tight

BY MATT LONG
TELEGRAPH SPORTS EDITOR

When Dylan Barri gets older,

he wants to be a bull rider.
For now, though, he prefers a
sheep.
Dylan, 5, is one of 36 young
cowboys and cowgirls who will
try their hand at mutton bust-
ing during the 50th Folsom Pro
Rodeo July 2-4 at Dan Russell
Arena.
Long one of the crowd
favorites, mutton busting is for
5 and 6-year-old boys and girls
weighing less than 55 pounds.
The participants, just like their
bull-riding elders, hold on to a
sheep for as long as possible
with prizes given out to the
top-three finishers. Dylan has
wanted to be a mutton buster
since he was 2.
“Since the first time he saw it
he’s wanted to do it,” Dylan’s
mom, Debbie, said. “He’s final-
ly old enough. What he really
wants to do is ride a bull.”
While Dylan’s dream of rid-
ing a bull will have to wait a few
more years, he’s anxious to try
out a sheep.
“I’m not going to be nerv-
ous,” Dylan said. “I think it will
be easy. I’m going to hold on to
the sides of the sheep and the
wool under the chest. I think I
can hold on for five seconds.”
Dylan’s been practicing on
his mom, as well as he neigh-
bor, Anthony, and a rocking
chair pony.
Chloe Baade, 6, tips the
scales at 42 pounds and is
looking to improve on her per-
formance from a year ago
when she competed in the
event for the first time.
“She’s all excited about it,”
her dad, Eric, said. “She didn’t
win last year, but she had a
good time. I think she might

Williamses honored as grand marshals

Couple have been
involved in rodeo
for five decades
BY MARGARET SNIDER
TELEGRAPH CORRESPONDENT

There are people who con-

sider it important to be a vital
part of their community.
Folsom Pro Rodeo 2010
Grand Marshals Jim “Digger”
Williams and his wife, Sharon,
are those kind of people.
In 1960 they migrated from
Ohio to Folsom with a new
baby in a panel truck with
“Mike’s Laundry” painted on
the side.
“It threw oil all the way
across the United States,” Jim
said. “I was a cowboy wannabe
then.”
He immediately jumped into
action with the new rodeo,
doing whatever needed to be
done, and hasn’t stopped
since. The couple has the
memories to show for it.
In the early years, Jim said,
“I’d come home with black and
blue marks on my stomach
and Sharon would ask, ‘What
in the world is that from?’ And
I’d say, ‘That’s from wrestling
the steers!’”
Now they’ve been 50 years in
Folsom, have been married for
50 years as of last July, and this
year they will be traveling in
style in the Wells Fargo Stage-
coach, celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the rodeo.

Rodeo celebrates city’s Western heritage

BY ROBERTA LONG
SPECIAL TO THE TELEGRAPH

Today’s Folsom Pro Rodeo is

a spectacular three-night show
highlighting a way of life that is
part of the city’s heritage.
But, at the time of the first
rodeo in 1960, Folsom was a
“cowtown” in the best sense of
the word.
The city was the commercial
hub for the many dairy and
beef cattle ranches in the sur-
rounding area. The ranching
families mainly came from
those who settled here during
the Gold Rush. The land was
too rocky and the soil too poor
for farming, but the large
expanses of open land suited
cattle raising, and the ranches
were handed down from gen-
eration to generation.
At the same time, the city
was beginning to change and
grow. Folsom Dam was com-
pleted four years earlier, creat-
ing a recreational draw for peo-
ple who wanted to live and
work near the lake.
The first rodeo was a small
community affair, part of the
larger one-day Fourth of July
celebration. Madeleine Mose-
ley, who worked as a cashier at
Lucky’s Market and was a
member of the chamber
board, thinks it was Jay Fan-
ning who first threw out the
idea of a rodeo event on the
Fourth of July at a board meet-
ing. Jay owned the Chevron gas
station on East Bidwell and he
was a rider. In 1966, he and his
employee, Glen Guthrie, were
in the Folsom Rodeo.
On June 28, 1960, the Folsom
Telegraph reported, “The
Chamber of Commerce,
Rotary Club and Fire Depart-
ment of Folsom, together with
the local merchants, are plan-
ning a truly Old-Fashioned
Fourth of July this year with
plenty of fireworks, patriotic
observances and many unusu-
al events.” Tucker & Son FOLSOM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE • COURTESY TO THE TELEGRAPH

Folsom Chevrolet is involved

in the community in more
ways than one. Take, for
instance, a recent training exer-

“The Traverse is great for
