Period 3
The IRS
Tax season has arrived and for many low-income families it means the biggest paycheck
of the year while for the IRS it means the season of being vigilant8 and headaches. Earlier in the
week, the IRS released a statement dictating that tax refunds for more than 40 million families
might be delayed this year as they are trying to be heedful2 and prevent fraud and even identity
theft. This news is somewhat not new as in the past the IRS is notorious for being exacting7 and
delaying tax refunds as well. The reason they gingerly9 review each case is because last year
alone, tens of thousands of taxpayers were targeted by these thieves, and many of them never
even noticed. At least 70 organizations were victimized last tax season and this year they do not
plan to slow down which is why everyone , not only the IRS, has a reason to be conscientious5
and not hand their private information to the wrong hands. It is believed that these chary1 crooks
are most interested in W-2 forms and their data. Many victims claim someone pretending to be
their boss or employer requested their payroll or tax records via email and soon afterwards
received the horrible news that they had been part of a fraud.
The IRS states that their scrupulous6 methods helped prevent almost $47 billion in
fraudulent payments. Despite being circumspect3; however, thieves were still able to run away
with almost $8.9 billion in 2013-2014 alone, but this year they hope to lower that number down
by a large margin. In being meticulous4 and delaying tax returns, many families are forced to
work around this and delay their bills as well which can have many negative long term effects
for them and the economy. Despite the pros and cons, the IRS promises to work in an efficient
and wary10 manner and assure that most refunds should not take more than 21 days.
