Nevada Business Leaders Support Amendment to Assembly Bill 206

Balancing Clean Energy and Cost is Key to Energy Policy Success

As representatives of a broad range of industries and businesses both large and small we are writing to reaffirm our
commitment to Nevadas clean energy future. We commend the efforts of the Governor and the Nevada legislature
both past and present to move Nevada toward a position of leadership in the production of clean, renewable power.

Nevadas economy will flourish from attracting companies who have made commitments to clean energy. We have led
the way by collectively investing hundreds of millions of dollars in renewable energy to power our businesses.

Voters clearly wanted a clean energy future when they overwhelmingly passed the Energy Choice Initiative in 2016. But
they also spoke emphatically that they wanted a retail market to provide choices that will ensure affordable electricity,
particularly for low-income families. We too, want to make certain that our hundreds of thousands of employees are
not negatively affected by higher power bills. To many Nevada families, even a 3 or 5 percent rise in monthly power bills
can have a huge impact on their budget.

We believe an alternative -- recently proposed as an amendment to Assembly Bill 206 -- is the right approach to secure
Nevadas national leadership in renewable energy resources. This amendment makes a strong statement that Nevada is
committed to clean energy, by requiring any new electricity generated in the state to come from at least 50% renewable
energy resources.

This approach will put Nevada on a path toward cleaner air, innovative technologies, affordable energy prices and a
stronger, sustainable economy.

We join the many other companies and organizations that have called for stronger renewable energy standards. This
planning-based approach is a better way forward than a system of building new energy production facilities regardless
of whether theres a need for additional electricity. Furthermore, Nevada has benefited from cheap electricity from
California, whose aggressive and arbitrary renewable mandates have caused increased prices and excess electricity
generation ultimately sold at a loss to surrounding states. Well-intentioned goals for renewable energy can have
unintended consequences, and thats what Nevadans want to avoid.

We commend Assemblyman Chris Brooks and his co-sponsors for bringing this important legislation forward, and hope
the Legislature will consider the offered amendment. This proposal will protect Nevada families from rising energy costs
while maintaining high renewable energy goals for the Silver State, putting us on the path toward a clean energy future.
