WINNIPEG, MB - October 12, 2016 - Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. (WAA) will be
conducting a live emergency exercise the evening of Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Winnipeg
Richardson International Airport.
The exercise will involve a simulated incident on the airfield and in the terminal with on-airport
and off-airport emergency response vehicles and personnel participating. The location and
timing has been planned to avoid disruption to airfield and terminal operations. In the interest
of maintaining the learning outcomes for the exercise, specifics on the precise timing and
incident scenario will not be released, except where necessary, prior to the exercise
commencing.
Complying with Transport Canada Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices, the
exercise will enable airport and emergency response personnel to review and practice
emergency response procedures in a safe and controlled environment. Agencies and partners
collaborating with WAA on this exercise include the RCMP, Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg
Fire Paramedic Service, Canada Border Services Agency, U.S. Customs and Border
Protection, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, Delta Air Lines, WestJet and the
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
During the exercise the airport will remain open and emergency response services will be
available at all times in the event of a real incident at the airport. Signage will be posted inside
the terminal and travellers will be updated through the public address system and social media
as needed. If severe weather or other operational concerns arise, the exercise will be
postponed and an update issued.
