He didnt stay long, but long enough for me to know he was delivering a message. I
closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and asked, Hawk brother, whats your
message? Once you ask the question of the spirit animal (in this case Hawk spirit),
its important to pay attention to everything that happens following, including what
you see, hear, or feel.
In this case I immediately heard my inner voice, Stay focused and pay attention for
other signs, which turned out to be completely relevant for the upcoming mens
group. My friend and I had offered to facilitate this particular session and since the
group had been meeting for some time now, we both agreed that it was time to push
the edges a bit further. We were confident the processes would open the way for
greater honesty and depth.

and attributes.
Christians saw it as representing the soul and its journey. Native American
tribes respect Butterfly as the messenger of transformation, happiness and
the glorious colors of nature, and in China newlyweds were often given gifts
bearing two Butterfly images to insure their marital happiness and harmony.

In Celtic Animal Astrology those born between 9/30-10/27 are the Sign of the
Butterfly. Butterfly people are social, outgoing flitters landing here and
there, and bringing delight as they go. Butterfly is a bit of dreamer and
restless soul, who constantly explores new ideas and places with optimism
on his or her wings.
For many, the beginning of the New Year signals a sense of transformation a time to evaluate life in its
current state and set goals for manifesting change. The butterfly symbolizes transformation and joy. Its
dance reflects the need for movement from where we are to our next phase of being
History
In early Christianity, the butterfly was a symbol of the soul. In China, it was used as a symbol of conjugal
bliss and joy. The butterfly was particularly revered by the tribes of the American southwest. Its dance is
performed by both Navajo and Hopis. In the Hopi tradition, unmarried girls of the butterfly clan wore their
hair in the shape of butterfly wings to advertise their availability. To Native Americans, the butterfly is a
symbol of change, joy and color. The exquisite butterfly was considered a miracle of transformation and
resurrection.
In the Old World, the connotation was negative; the butterfly was
thought to be the spirit of the dead. In Gnostic art, the angel of death is
depicted crushing a butterfly underfoot. Its attraction to flame and light
symbolize purification by fire. Sailors who saw a butterfly prior to
embarkation believed that they would die at sea. In some areas of
England, it is thought that butterflies contain the souls of children who
have come back to life. Elsewhere in England, a person is supposed to
kill the first butterfly they see or face a year of bad luck; if that first
butterfly in spring is yellow, sickness is in store for the entire family.
Only in Scotland and Ireland does the appearance of a golden butterfly
signify something good it is believed that a golden butterfly near the dead ensures the souls place in
heaven.
Biological Characteristics
Many who read this next statement will cringe since few things evoke as strong an emotional response in
humans as insects do but butterflies are insects. Consider however, that insects succeed as a group
because of six primary qualities:
5.The ability to delay fertilization until conditions are beneficial enables their species to survive.
Metamorphosis is the magic that insects can teach us. Change ensures
growth. We have to shed the old before we can come into the new. We
give birth to ideas, activities, or qualities. Ideas and creativity need to be
shaped, formed, developed and honed. After this is accomplished, the new
foundation is laid. Sometimes, we need to back off and go deeply within
after laying a foundation so that creation will be able to come forth strong
and in a new light. Just as the adult butterfly only emerges when conditions
are right, our ideas and activities will only flourish on a higher level when
conditions are right. That is the force of creation the only constant is that
we are always changing.
Butterflies appear to dance as they flitter among the flowers. They remind us
not to take things so seriously within our lives. They awaken a sense of
lightness and joy. They remind us to get up and move, for if you do not move,
you cannot dance.
Butterflies bring color and joy with them. The colors of the butterfly should be
examined for significance and to help you understand its role within your life.
Look at how much or little joy is in your life. Lighten up. Look for change. Make
changes when the opportunities present themselves. The butterfly will teach
you that growth and change do not have to be traumatic. Change can occur as gently and as joyfully as
one wishes.
The Lesson
The lesson of the butterfly is letting go of old behavior and expounding into the next phase of existence.
Each of us transforms through multiple stages in our life. It is only through exertion that we emerge into
who we will be next. Ask for butterfly help when:
You need help organizing a project or detailing the sequence of steps to complete it.
You know it is time for a change and need the courage to break free from your cocoon.
You are experiencing a major life change.
You take things too seriously.
Access butterfly power by
Noticing colors you are drawn to and trying to discern what they mean for you.
Choosing a habit you no longer want, developing and implementing a plan to change it.
Observing butterflies in their natural environment (a park or preserve) and noting what you are
thinking when one comes into view.
Wrapping yourself tightly in a blanket for a few minutes and then slowly unwrapping it and emerge.
Does this seem like a metaphor for anything in your life right now?
Dance! Alone or with someone, release the energy to propel you forward.

The beauty of the butterfly makes its appearance after going through the various stages starting from
an egg, then into the caterpillar, then into the cocoon and finally into the butterfly. The transformation of
this small creature from an egg to a butterfly is a wonderful thing. A human being will definitely go
insane if he is subjected to the huge amount of energy required to effect these changes during his
lifecycle, which is many times more than that of the butterfly.
The life cycle of a butterfly lasts for a very short period of nearly a month. Imagine if you only had one
month to do all that you needed to fully grow and transform! It would be inconceivable to determine
what any creature can do in its own lifespan but a butterfly totem or animal spirit shows that
transformation is a large part of your own personal path.
The transformation of the butterfly from an egg to its present state represents the many risks and
dangers posed by the surrounding environment. The dangers and risks faced by the butterfly during the
whole transformation process is a significant lesson for humans. The butterfly teaches us to face the
dangers and risks in life as casually as it does.
The butterfly reposes an unflinching belief on the natural transformation process. This is a symbol of the
faith on nature which it wants us to have as we go through the various changes in our lives. It reminds
us that working against the forces of nature is completely futile and foolish.
The symbolism accredited to animals and represented by a butterfly can be listed as:
Rising from the dead or rebirth.
Change of state.
Joy of achievement.
Enlightenment.
The time domains of the past, the present, and the future.
The inner spirit or soul.
It is very interesting to see that the symbolism assigned to an animal and which is represented by the
butterfly is connected to the inner spirit or soul, as well as being connected to faith, by many ancient
cultures. Because of the ever changing spectrum of the butterfly, change, transformation, and attaining
enlightenment are integral parts of the representation of the butterfly.
Psyche, meaning soul in the Greek language, has the form of a butterfly in Greek mythology. Just like
a woman, Psyche was in passionate love with Eros, the god of love in the Greek mythology. Eros is
also known as Cupid in the Roman mythology. The hopeless love Psyche and Eros or Cupid had for
each other was eternal as per the Greek mythology.
Not only the Greek mythology, but many other ancient mythologies around the world believe that the
beauty and the elegance of a butterfly have a relation with the inner spirit or soul. These mythologies
are:
The butterfly is linked to the soul in Christianity also. Butterflies are found to be engraved on ancient
Christian tombs because in some Christian art, Jesus Christ is seen holding a butterfly in his hands.
As we travel in time, the different twists and turns and the various conditions transform us into better
and better human beings. A butterfly goes through the changes from an egg at the start to the beautiful
butterfly at the end. When this change is over, it is very difficult to distinguish it from the egg which was
there in the beginning. Often the transformation of the caterpillar to the butterfly alone is related to the
transformation of the human form as well. Both stages of transformation happen dramatically fast in
comparison to the human life cycle. Similarly our soul also gets transformed for the better, until at the
end of the road, it has completely changed. This makes the comparison between the butterfly and our
souls more befitting as both changes with time.
The gracefulness which the butterfly attains at the end of the journey makes us feel that we should also
keep faith in our journey through time. This is like taking the analogy between the soul and the butterfly
another step forward. We should believe that at the end of this journey and the changes occurring at
the different stages of this journey, will transform our souls from our initial form depicted by the egg to
the wonderful form depicted by the butterfly.
ve always loved the Monarch Butterfly, I have seen them in migration in the wild, released them when I
got married for the first time and mused about them in my shamanistic mind because I love symbolism in
life, it is a way I intuitively operate. When I write here on my journal I am mostly guided in my spiritual
pieces, and this one was gently nudging me since 4.15 this morning.
In the early hours of this morning they actually woke me up, they were tickling and buzzing all over my
legs, sitting on the side of my head and I could see one of its full cute faces looking at me through the
magnifying lens of my camera. Yes, it was only a dream but they left me with a peacefulness and joy as
they floated around a beautiful light and minty greenhouse.
Since I was young I have dabbled enough in shamanism to know that, whenever any animal shows up
with strong intent or in a unique way, its good to pay attention to the message it brings. To the Native
Americans the butterfly is a symbol of joy. They remind us that life is a dance, not to take things quite so
seriously. They also remind us to get up and move. Dance brings the sweetness of life. So, what do
butterflies symbolize and what do we know about them?
Facts regarding the Monarch Butterfly:
Monarch butterflies are known as the wanderer butterflies in Australia and have been here since the
early 1800s. Notable for its bright orange, black and white colouration, and whilst safe to humans they
are toxic.
The Monarch is one of the longest living butterflies and will live for up to a couple of months after being
released.
They are known for their transatlantic migrations elsewhere in the world, but in Australia they only make
short trips if necessary, due to the already warm temperatures throughout most of the continent.
Monarch butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than is below 55 F (13 C). They will sit in
the sun or shiver their wings to warm up. (Sounds a bit like me!)
Butterfly: a symbol metamorphosis and transformation
Did you know that according to scientific research, the butterfly is the only living being capable of
changing entirely its genetic structure during the process of transformation: the caterpillars DNA is totally
different from the butterflys! Those who have a butterfly as their totem animal may have a difficult
childhood. Life lessons are revealed to the consciousness while in the womb of the mother the cocoon
stage and are completed when the caterpillar emerges into the butterfly and takes flight. Butterflies
are symbols of freedom and creativity. They hold the gift of transformation, shape-shifting and soul
evolution, and equally require courage to carry out the changes required in order to grow.
When butterfly shows up, make note of the most important issues confronting you at the moment. What
state of change are you at in regard to them? You may need to find clarity in mental or emotional
processes or organise projects, or figure out your next step in your internal growth. Maybe you are about
to undergo a significant transformation. Examine which stage calls your attention first: the egg is the
beginning, the birth of an idea; the larva is the decision to manifest something in the physical world; the
cocoon has to do with going inside; the breaking of the cocoon is the creation and beauty shared with
the world. They hold the gift of soul evolution
