Becoming The More Effective Teen

When reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens you may enjoy that the

book speaks to the teen reader or whoever may struggle with being highly effective in a

compassionate and advising way. The author gives the reader life fulfilling tips to let

them know that theyre life has great things to undergo. 7 Habits of Highly Effective

Teens Sean Covey presents and describes 7 habits available to teens who would be

struggling along the path to adulthood. Covey directs the reader to a path of self

righteousness and success. Sean Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens shows

that the defective teen needs to humble themselves by seeking to be understood, taking

responsibility for their actions, and not be a reactive person in this world.

The thing that us teens do best is want. According to Habit #5 in Coveys book,

Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are- a unique, one of a kind,

never to be cloned (at least for now) individual. In this world people all want something

out of it but the real question is, what are they putting into it? For instance, we know

that as a kid growing up, we would ask our parents for things that obviously cost money.

Our parents dont have to do anything but feed and clothe us, whatever else they decide

to do, that is a choice made by them. This means we have to grow up and eventually

provide for ourselves in a world that only cares about what it wants. Therefore teens

need a plan and some more habits. In growing up, it is a bare necessity to take

responsibility and be held accountable for the things we have all done in the past that

affected others.

Life can be changed by the 10% of things that happen to you and 90% what you

do with it. According to Habit 1 of the highly defective teen says that the highly defective

teen blames all their mishaps on their parents, friends or teachers. By the look and

sound of that the teen doesnt know what it means to be a proactive young adult. For

instance when a teenager gets called out in class to answer a question he/she doesnt

even know the answer to. The teen could feel as if its the teacher's fault for not implying

the curriculum but at the same time the teen could do a couple if not several things to

better their education. This shows that when something happens to a teen in the world,

they have the power to determine what happens to them after that based on the reaction

they have to it. The next time the reader comes along a bump in the road they know or

feel as if they have control over the situation. Being a reactive person shows the teen that

they are not in control of what happens to them and that they just blame their peers,

parents, or teachers without realizing what theyve done for them.

When being a reactive person gets into being a habit the teen doesnt realize the

people that are involved in this self centered paradigm. According to habit 4 of Sean

Coveys book it influences the idea that we should develop good relationships with the

people around so we dont break any bones when it gets rough, if the teen continues. In

the life of the average teen it is obvious to see that there is a big social aspect involved in

their everyday lives. With this aspect comes complications and emotional altercations

that leave the teenager thinking, I wonder how she/he feels. For the people that have

helped them along the way to feel that there duty goes unnoticed but this reader is here

to know that they have a big impact on others based on the choices they have made in

life. This means that the teen may need to take a step back and try to build meaning and

significant relationships with others in order to be in the position to be an effective

human being, not only the effective teen.

In the end becoming the effective teen takes a lot of focus because the things that

the reader may do everyday, often goes unnoticed. The teen doesnt need to feel entitled

to anything, instead, the teen needs to know that they can provide the support they need

right from themselves. One thing that I want to leave the reader with is that when you

do the things you might see as irrelevant, everyone can see it. Teens need to work

together with someone who has the same vision as them, together than can work for an

even greater good for other teens to come.
