Suspension Team

Week 3
Link Length Calculations
In order to calculate the link lengths and the position of the spring over damper
system we assumed the anti-dive and anti-life percentage for both the front and rear
suspension system. Using these values we calculated the link lengths in the following
manner :

Front Suspension
The location for the IC (Instantaneous Centre) and the angle it makes with the wheel
centre was evaluated and was used to decide the link lengths of the leading link
suspension.

Rear Suspension
The anti-dive and anti-lift percentage along with pen and paper strength calculation
was done to decide the semi trailing arm geometry.
Front Suspension - Anti Lift

Anti dive and lift percentages are suspension parameters which determine the amount
of load transferred to the suspension arms.
Anti lift for front suspension = 36 %
Front Suspension - Anti dive

Anti dive for front suspension = 90 %

Rear Suspension - anti lift
Anti lift for rear suspension = 90 %
Rear Suspension - anti squat
Anti squat for independent rear suspension = 36 %
Calculation for link length
Modelling on Software and Future Work
The leading link and semi trailing arm suspension have been designed on Adams
Software based on the calculated link lengths on Adams/Car software.

Simulation for parallel wheel travel and single wheel travel will be conducted to check
amount of camber and toe change, and adjust link lengths accordingly for acceptable
values. Also forces generated in the suspension arms will be obtained from the Adams
simulation and will be used to perform Ansys Static Structural analysis to check for
strength of the arms for the above cases and during braking and acceleration.

The damper for the front and rear suspension will be decided by performing the
necessary calculations and spring rates will be adjusted accordingly.
