Introduction
Therelaysistheelementthatsensesanabnormalconditioninthecircuitandcommandstheoperationofthebreaker.Theycanbeclassifiedinanumberofways:
Accordingtothequantitysensed:current,voltage,activepower,reactivepower,impedancerelays
Accordingtothetripping:instantaneoustrip,delayedtrip,inversetimecurrentresponse
Accordingtotheoperatingprinciple:electromagneticrelays,inductionrelays,thermalrelays,staticordigitalrelays
Moregeneralclassificationdistinguishtwotypesofrelays:
1.Electromechanicalrelays
2.Digitalrelays
Currently,electromechanicalrelayinallitsformsisbeingreplacedbystatic,digitalandnumericalrelays,eachchangebringingwithitreductionsandsizeand

Inmosttypes(exceptdigitalrelays)therelayscontactsareclosedbyamovingpartwhichsensesaforceproportionaltothecurrent(orothersensedquantity)inthecircuit.

Timeovercurrentrelaysoperatewithatimedelay,whichisadjustable.Forgivensetting,theactualtimedelaydependsonthecurrentthroughtherelaycoil.Highercurrent
