Om Entertainment’s ‘Khatta Meetha’ is a
satirical comedy on the rampant corrup-
tion within the system narrated through the life
of a struggling road construction contractor, Sa-
chin Tichkule. (Played by Akshay).
Produced by Akshay Kumar and directed by
his all-time favourite director, Priyadarshan, the
film marks the Bollywood debut of south sensa-
tion, Trisha Krishnan. Like all other Priyadar-
shan films, this one is also a remake a south film.
This time Priyadarshan has chosen the 1989 hit
Malayalam movie, ‘Vellanakalude Nadu’, which
was directed by him and starred the famous pair
of Mohanlal and Shobana.
Besides Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan,
the film stars Makrand Deshpande, Rajpal Yadav,
Johny Lever, Neeraj Vora, Milind Gunaji, Asrani,

Atul Parchure, Aruna Irani, Urvashi Sharma and
Paritosh Sand. The music of the film has been
composed by Pritam and it is scheduled for a July
23 release.
Synopsis:
A struggling road construction contractor,
Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) is doomed to
dream big. There is no possibility whatsoever of
his dreams ever coming true, simply because he
has no money to bribe!
To make matters worse, the new munici-
pal commissioner turns out to be his ex-girl-
friend (Trisha) who now hates him. Even as you
amusedly watch Sachin bumble his way from one
disaster to another, the film exposes the extent
of corruption and bribery rampant in the system,
and the ingenious means one has to adopt in or-
der to survive in it.

TV Motion Pictures and Aamir Khan Productions’ ‘Peepli
(Live)’, is a satirical story on the farmers’ suicides and
the media uproar over the developments. The film has
been directed by Anusha Rizvi, who makes her directorial debut.
The cast of ‘Peepli (Live)’ was selected after an extensive and
exhaustive casting process that lasted over four months. Over
600 to 900 actors were auditioned in several cities in India.
In the event, legendary Indian theatre director Habib Tanvir’s
Naya Theatre repertory which comprises mainly rural folk
actors provided the main stay. This is the first feature film for a
majority of the film’s actors, most of whom have a background in
theatre. The film stars Raghubir Yadav, Omkar Das Manikpuri,
Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Malaika Shenoy in the principal roles,
besides several other newcomers. It also stars Naseeruddin Shah
and Aamir Bashir in special appearances. The music of the film
is given by Mathias Duplessy and Indian Ocean.
It is distributed by UTV Motion Pictures and scheduled for
an August 13 release.
Synopsis:
Natha, a poor farmer from Peepli village in the heart of
rural India, is about to lose his plot of land due to an unpaid
government loan. A quick fix to the problem is the very same
government’s program that aids the families of indebted farmers
who have committed suicide. As a means of survival farmer Natha
can choose to die! His brother is happy to push him towards
this unique ‘honor’ but Natha is reluctant. Local elections are
around the corner and what might’ve been another unnoticed
event turns into a ‘cause celebre’ with everyone wanting a piece
of the action. Political bigwigs, high-ranking bureaucrats, local
henchmen and the ever-zealous media descend upon sleepy
Peepli to stake t heir claim. The question on everyone’s lips
- “Will he or Won’t he?” As the mania escalates, what will be
the fate of Farmer Natha; nobody seems to care how he really
feels?

our performance
in ‘Lamhaa’ has
come for a lot of
appreciation?
How does it feel?
I am glad my hard work and
dedication has paid off. Initially
I had my own apprehensions
of how well I would be able
to justify the role of Aziza, a
sturdy leader of a women’s
group in Srinagar, who believed
in the freedom of Kashmir. But
I eventually managed to get
into the skin of the character.
Besides, it was an uphill task
shooting in Kashmir. Whether it
was the director, producer or us
actors, all of us had memorable
experiences to narrate by the
time we had finished shooting
the film.
How much has your
perception of Kashmir
changed after this role?
I would say completely. We
have heard all kinds of stories
about Kashmir and how it has
been a terror-stricken state
since the past 18 years. We
have begun to associate the
place with terror. But when
I interacted with some of the
people there, I could understand
the fear and insecurity that
they were going through. The
people there are faced with
a whole lot of problems. The
children especially girls have
seen nothing but guns, riots
and tension around them. The
experience of shooting there
was an eye opener for all of us.

is true that I was a bit skeptical

have changed over the years, so
has their dress sense. They are
now comfortable with earthy
colors and dupattas, as against
their traditional clothing.
Coming to your question, I
think I can fit into any role and
play it with conviction, as long
as I am convinced about it.
When it comes to choosing
between a deglam role and
a commercial role, which
one would you prefer?
I generally
go by my gut
feeling,
when it
comes
to
signing
a film.
On one side
there are films
like ‘All The Best’
and on the other side, there are
films like ‘Lamhaa’ and ‘Pankh’.
I also have another film called
‘Aakrosh’, which is about the
honour killings in Bihar. Then
there is an altogether different
film like ‘Dum Maro Dum’,
which is a fun-film about the
drug mafia in Goa. Finally, it
all boils down to how much
credibility you can give to your
performance.
Apart from films, these
days you are also in the
news for reviving your
friendship with Kareena

certainly on the cards but not yet. Both
my parents and John’s parents have
been persuading us to take an early
decision. They are aware that we will
get married sooner or later but believe
me Bengali girls often get married at a
later age.
But why are you and John keeping
a low profile?
We can’t excite you guys anymore.
Our relationship has come to a level
where we don’t want to be spoken about
much. We may sound boring but that’s
about it. We are content with the fact
that we share the same level of love and
excitement in our relationship even

eepika’s fitness is the envy of
the younger girls today. With
her flawless skin and a figure to
match, she is the perfect Bollywood diva.
We spoke to her about her fitness regime:
I think working out and maintaining
a healthy body should be
a priority for everyone. I
try and work out as often
as possible. Since I travel
regularly for my shoots
it becomes difficult to
work out at the gym but
whenever possible I make
it a point to either exercise
at the gym or do yoga for
an hour or so. Sometimes
I dance to break away from
the regular routine. I have
an atheletic body thanks to
my badminton. I combine
cardio with weight training.
If I can’t go to the gym walk twice a day
half an hour in the morning and half an
hour in the evening. I also run for 40
minutes or climb up the stairs for cardio
when I have enough time.
Yoga: I dedicate time in the evenings
for yoga. For me now it has become a
norm it rejuvenates me and keeps me
fresh. I also meditate for some time it
makes me feel peaceful.
Dance: It has been a major influence
in life. Jazz, Bharat Natyam anything. I
think it’s very important for all kids to learn
some form of sport, dance and music. So I
dance it makes me feel very fit and healthy.

For me fitness is not about being skinny or
slim. It’s about being healthy from inside
also. When I was modeling it helped me
gain grace and poise.
Diet: I think one should combine
exercising along with eating the right kind
of food-healthy wholesome
food. I am a complete foodie
and can’t give up on food. I
make it up by exercising.
I prefer to have home
cooked food. Dal, rice
vegetables. I am non
vegetarian and love to have
fish. But when I eat out I
stick to idlis because it’s
light. If it’s a dosa, I have it
minus the potato filling. If
it’s eggs I have only the white
portion and if I have idlis I
substitute coconut chutney
with pudina chutney. I love
rice since I am a south Indian. I guess my
body is so used to rice, that it doesn’t react
to it at all.
Breakfast: I can’t do without
breakfast. I have a huge breakfast -
sometimes we have non vegetarian -
sometimes upma, idlis, dosa, and parathas
- whatever it is I eat a lot of it.
Lunch: I have two rotis and some
vegetable, some dal, rice and salad so
that makes it a balanced diet and it covers
everything.
Dinner: I avoid rice and non
vegetarian at night. I binge on Thai food
and chocolate desserts.

Priyadarshan gets a taste of the star-driven
system
If one were to think that newcomers are now a
welcome change in Bollywood with the many films
starring newcomers, it is a misconception. The old
trend of producers signing stars in order to ensure
the marketability of their films hasn’t changed
either. Take the example of Priyadarshan, who

Actress Neetu Chandra
became one of the few
privileged Bollywood
celebrities to have the
honour of running with
the Commonwealth Games
torch (popularly known as
the Queen’s Baton) in her
hometown Patna, this week.
Neetu was selected for
the relay, owing to her
active association in sports.
Apart from being a regular
basketball player, the actress
is a Black Belt 2nd Dan,
having participated in various
martial arts tournaments at a
district, national, as well as
international level.
“The Commonwealth
Games promote international
integration, so it was a huge
honour for me to sprint with
the torch. I got goose bumps
in excitement,” she exclaimed
after the run. “The Queen’s Baton felt like a ‘power baton’ and gave me a different
kind of high. It was a mix of pride and responsibility,” Neetu added.
It may be recalled that ‘The Queen’s Baton’ relay began when the baton, which
contains Queen Elizabeth II’s message to the athletes, left Buckingham Palace on

become my favourite

From her television debut, ‘Kasam Se’ to her film debut,
‘Rock On ‘, Prachi Desai has indeed come a long way
in her career. Today she is looking forward to Milan
Luthria’s much-talked about film, ‘Once Upon A Time
In Mumbai’ where she will be sharing screen space with
the likes of Ajay Devgan and Emraan Khan.

ell us about your role in
‘Once Upon a Time In
Mumbai’. The buzz is that
like Kangana, you too will
be sporting a retro look in the film.
I play the role of a Muslim girl,
Mumtaz, who hails from a traditional
family. I will be seen in a very different
look with long hair, flicks, jhumkas and
tight salwars. My designers Rushi and
Manushi did a lot of detailing, even

Your role is also being talked about
for your steamy intimate scene with
serial kisser, Emraan Hashmi. We
are told that you were rather shaky
before doing it.
Frankly, there is a lot more to my role
than the scene you are talking about.
It is true that I was initially skeptical
about doing the scene with so many
people around. However, both director
Milan Luthria and Emraan assured me
that there was nothing to worry about.
I trusted Milan at that point of time
and decided to go ahead. To the best
of my knowledge the scene has been
aesthetically shot.
As for Emraan, I did not know him
earlier but he has now become my
favourite co-star. I think Emraan is quite
a misunderstood person. He is soft and
humourous in contrast to the rather
aggressive roles he has played on screen.
He is also an underrated actor and it is
time people started acknowledging him
for his talent.
Are you looking forward to working
with any particular actors?
I have worked with Farhan in ‘Rock
On’, now Emraan and I have already
done a commercial with Salman who was
on my wish list too I would love to work

Devgan and Farhan, if the opportunity
arises. But I would be even happier to
work with all actors. I am ambitious
about my career and want to do some
really good work.
It is said that it was your friendship
with Ekta Kapoor that gave you
the passage to films, with Ekta
recommending you strongly for
film roles.
Casting an actor has always been a
director’s choice. It is true that I have
always shared a very different equation
with Ekta. We are more like family but
we have always kept our professional
and personal life apart. When it came
to casting in ‘Rock On’, it was entirely
Abhishek Kapoor’s decision. Even
Farhan (Akhtar) learnt about it much
later and had no idea about it. Abhishek’s
mother had seen me on television and it
was she who felt that I would be ideal for
the film.
But why has there been such a long
gap after your first film?
It was deliberately planned that way.
I wanted the audiences to understand my
transition from television to films. I did
not want instant fame. It was important
for me to have that gap in my career
for the people to see and believe in me.
Ever since my debut venture in 2008, I
have done three films in three years. I
guess the audiences will now accept me
gradually but that is completely fine with
me.
Being in the world of showbiz, have
you learnt to handle the gossips
written about you?
I am still getting used to it. Earlier,
I would cry for days together whenever
I would see something negative written
about me. But now I am gradually
learning to ignore it and take it in my
stride. I don’t mind if people write about
my acting ability but I hate it if someone
points fingers at my personal life. I am
single and definitely would not like the
idea of being dragged into an imaginary
relationship. I want my work to be spoken
about, more than anything else.

gentleman who
started smoking at the
age of 16 years. He says he was
influenced by his parents and
peer group smoking around him.
He started off with 10 cigarettes
a day thereby increasing it to a

also realised that his smoking
was having an effect on him

He has now further reduced
his intake of cigarettes to 4-6
daily. His hope is to become
smoke free within a month.
Mark comments that giving
up smoking makes him more
empowering, his lack of taste
and smell have improved
remarkably and he now has
more discretionary income.

the Office of Ethnic Affairs and
Ministry of Women’s Affairs’
joint Intimate Partner Violence
Project’s brochure – Speak
Up, Seek Help, Safe Home
yesterday.
This first initiative, a
brochure, contains translated
information in 10 languages
about rights of women and
the help available to victims
of intimate partner violence.
This is a result of extensive
consultation with ethnic
communities.
Mrs Wong says that reducing
the damaging impact of
domestic violence is a priority
for the government. “Domestic
violence affects every part of
society regardless of ethnicity,
socio-economic or employment

countdown is well and truly
underway as Statistics New

in on our five-yearly census.
