Windows Server 2008
Lab 11

Introduction
Lab 11s objective was for us to setup and get familiar with Windows Server 2008. First we
installed the OS using Virtualbox VM software. After creating a new VM profile and going
through all the installation steps, we installed some services to the server. These included a DNS
server, FTP server, and a web server. Lastly, we configured the servers and tested them using a
Debian virtual machine.

Part 3.3: Create a web site

VMs couldnt ping each other, or access each other through FTP. Both VMs had their
network adapters set to bridged adapter as the lab says. I also checked IP
addresses for the windows server and debian VM. Windows server is static and set

to 192.168.5.10 as shown below:

Also, windows server 2008 could never access the DNS server at 172.16.1.252 both
times I attempted this lab.

Im sure I missed something simple as far as network settings is concerned, as that

is the only thing not working properly. Either way, I couldnt figure it out at the time
of doing the lab.
Summary
Lab 11 wasnt difficult in my opinion except for some network issues I had. The lab guided us
through installing and setting up Windows server 2008. I enjoy working with Windows operating
systems, and am quite familiar with them as opposed to Linux or Mac OS. The main portion of
the lab, once the OS was installed, was to set up the roles the web server would play. This was all
about following the directions in the lab along with filling in the correct web addresses when
needed. I had issues during the very last part of the lab as my two virtual machines couldnt
reach each other on the network, and without that step I couldnt really configure the web server.
On a side note, I felt as if some of the directions in the lab regarding network connections could
have been worded better. Overall though, I feel as if this lab went over well with me, I
understand more aspects of the Windows server 2008 environment and have the general
knowledge on how to set up different server utilities via the server manager.
