Unit 5: Assignment 2: Evaluate a response to a brief

Unit 54

In this unit, I was required to design digital graphics for print using a
suitable image design of my choice and manipulation software. In this
case, the software I used to develop all of my graphics was Photoshop to
export and edit the whole of my images.

This was the ILP I used in assignment three to help me keep on track for
the deadline to design and develop all of my graphics for print.

Julian Thompson
Throughout the unit, I had meetings with my client
on a few occasions. This was to discuss the progress
I had made up to that point and assure that all my
ideas for a particular assignment was up to the
clients expectations and requirements. Also, to
make sure that work I was planning on producing
would meet the assignment brief, but also how well
it met the brief. Therefore, if there was something in
my work that the client did not particularly like they
could point it out so I could make suitable
alterations to suit their needs.
I documented the client meetings in a document on
its own as well as the proposal I produced for one of
the first assignments to present to the client the
entirety of my ideas for designing the graphics in detail, before actually
beginning the production.
At the very start of the assignment, I had an initial client meeting to
discuss and explain exactly what was expected from me by the client and
what I am supposed to produce overall in this assignment. In other units I
designed a client liaison diary which I basically tracked and recorded the
meetings I had with my client and wrote down the comments they had
made on my progress so far in a particular project.
In this unit, I did hold a few client meetings which I recorded and wrote
down the clients comments and guidance within my client liaison
document pictured below.

Julian Thompson
In this unit, like most other design and creation units, I was required to
produce a diary. The diary will include the production process of all of my
graphics on each day of working on the project. The diary should show the
process of producing my graphics from the very first session beginning the
digital production process in Photoshop, to exporting the final finished
image.
Here shows the whole of my diary during this project which includes what I
achieved on each day on the assignment and what amendments I made
to my graphics where relevant.

Julian Thompson
Throughout this project, I made certain amendments to my designs. This
was for various reasons. Maybe because I no longer liked the original idea
I thought of, or just because once I had created my initial design I decided
it no longer worked with what I was planning or just didnt fit with the
overall theme of my products. I recorded some of these amendments I
made to the designs in my diary for the graphics. However, I also wrote
down and explained some amendments in my evaluation of the project as
well. I did this to represent how my initial idea for my graphics had
changed throughout the production process to reach the final image I
produced.
In this unit I did not receive any peer feedback as I was not required by
the client or the assignment brief to produce a questionnaire. However, I
did receive numerous types of feedback and guidance from the client
themselves as mentioned before. I met with the client on around 3
occasions where she gave me guidance on the progress I had made and
what alterations I could make to my work to improve it further. The client
also stated what was not sure about in my work and maybe what I should
remove from my work because it isnt relevant.
I did have to bear in mind the legal and ethical codes of practice whilst
designing my graphics. This was because, legally, I am not allowed to
import images from the internet for personal use, or in this case to use in
the design of my graphics. This is if the images are copyrighted however, I
am able to use content I find on the internet if it is copyright free or if I
have gained permission from the copyright holder themselves to use their
content for my own use.
With this in mind, I did design my own graphics from scratch, so there was
no need for me to get content online to use in my own work. This was
because I designed all of my graphics from scratch using my own ideas
making them as original as possible.

After I had created all of my graphics, I put together an evaluation. The

evaluation was aimed at reviewing all the work I had done in this
assignment, as well as assess my graphics on how well I personally think
they are and how effective they are at meeting the clients requirements
and the assignments brief.
I had to cover sub-headings given to me by the assignment brief, but I
could include any additional information that was relevant to my project if
I wanted to. The evaluation gave me an opportunity to give myself

Julian Thompson
constructive criticism and see how I could improve my work further if I
was, in theory, to do this project again.

Unit 78

In this Unit, I was required to research about computer games of my

choice to the requirements of the brief for each assignment. Overall, in
this unit there was four individual assignments. The whole aim of this unit

Julian Thompson
was to create a concept design for a new game. The game could be a
follow-on from an already existing game series, or a completely new
concept altogether. I followed the ILP throughout this unit to keep on
schedule for individual tasks as well as the assignments official deadline.

I had an initial client meeting at the very start of the assignment to

discuss what exactly I was expected to do within the project and so I
understood correctly the clients requirements. I also met up with the
client on occasions to discuss my progress up to that point in the project.
This was recorded in the form of a client liaison diary, which I kept
updated as and when I met with the client.

Julian Thompson
Throughout this project, I made
certain amendments to my
designs for my characters and backgrounds.
As well as this, I also amended the original idea for my game on numerous
occasions as I could not decide on an appropriate name for my game. I
also considered the actual game for a while, thinking of the most
appropriate target audience for the game I would be designing. This was
for various reasons. Maybe because I no longer liked the original idea I
thought of, or because I had purely changed my mind on the specific
target audience I particularly wanted to address and which audience
would be the easiest for me to target. . I recorded some of these
amendments I made to the designs in my diary for the graphics. However,
I also wrote down and explained some amendments in my evaluation of
the project as well.

Julian Thompson
In this unit, I was
not required to collate any feedback from my peers. I felt although that
the feedback and guidance I got from my client was more than enough for
me to work on and improve my work further to a higher standard.
In other units of work, I was required to collect peer feedback in the form
of questionnaires and then analyse the feedback I was given in a
questionnaire analysis document.

For this project, I was required to consider the legal and ethical codes of
practice. This meant covering in detail the limitations of using copyrighted
content, as well as bearing in mind the ethical side of the project. Ethical
considerations include not offending a particular race or religion e.c.t. I
covered this in a document name legal and ethical considerations which
can be seen below. I was careful not to include any copyrighted content in
my project such as images and logos that already existed. Also, I couldnt
make my project offensive towards any people, as this would breach the
ethical considerations I was asked to contemplate throughout the unit.

Julian Thompson
The evaluation I created was basically a review of what the overall project
I had just completed. The last assignment in this unit asked me to write an
evaluation based on all the sub headings that it gave me, but I could
include any additional information about my project if I liked. The
evaluation critically analysed my project on what content I included that I
particularly liked, what I maybe should have included in hindsight and
what I might do to improve my project further if I was to do this whole unit
again.
I simply wrote the evaluation in a word document by itself.
The evaluation was a chance for me to reflect on all pieces of work in this
unit and give my honest opinion on what I thought I had done to a high
standard, as well as what I could have done better looking back. The
evaluation could help me in future projects as I assess what I could have
improved on so I know if I do another unit similar to this one, how I can
make it even more successful.

Julian Thompson
In the evaluation for
this unit, I was also required by the assignment
brief to consider real-life employer expectations
in relation to this unit of work. This meant
applying the skills I used in this project to the real world. I covered this in
a range of headings including English, maths and IT skills.
It is important to realise how to apply the skills I used in this project to real
world situations and jobs in the media industry. This is because I have
used a range of skills especially graphic design as I have worked on
Photoshop, not only for this unit, but for many other tasks in other units.
