Greek cinema has been making its presence felt on the world scene in the last few years,
while gaining international acknowledgment. With a view to assisting filmmakers to achieve
their targets, the G.F.C. has been actively engaged in all important European initiatives sup-
porting audiovisual professionals either by the Council of Europe (Eurimages) or the European
Commission (MEDIA programme). It is imperative that Greek film professionals be given the
opportunity to take advantage of any available funding opportunity from European or other
sources, whether this refers to the support of film production, the digitization of screens or
the wider circulation of films.
Therefore, in response to many requests from professionals, MEDIA Desks Hellas has pro-
ceeded with the publication of a concise manual on the film sector in Greece. This initiative
aims to facilitate interaction between European and Greek filmmakers and invite participa-
tion in European Union programmes, such as MEDIA, within the framework of the coopera-
tion between the European Commission and the Greek Film Centre. We hope that by offering
more visibility to the Greek film sector, the work of filmmakers will become easier, as they are
already facing a lot of challenges.

The film guide starts with a presentation of the majority of film production companies oper-
ating in Greece listed in alphabetical order. The production companies were given the chance
to describe their activities and the advantages that they could offer to potential partners.
The current list contains 144 production companies, which could fulfill at least one eligibility
criterion for applying for development support in the MEDIA programme. Although many
production companies would not be currently eligible for applying to the MEDIA programme
as other criteria may not be met, a choice was made to include as many production compa-
nies as possible. One of the reasons is that MEDIA Desk Hellas has received a lot of requests
to compile such a list from filmmakers, both from Greece and abroad, who would now have
the chance to contact a production company and share their idea for a project. The next sec-
tion is composed of a list of films which were completed in 2011 and are listed for statistical
purposes. The film listing is followed by some figures about the distribution of films in Greece.
After that one can find a catalogue with films and documentaries supported by the Greek
Film Centre, with a description and the technical details of available copies prepared by the
Hellas Film department of the Greek Film Centre for the purposes of this Guide. A detailed
presentation of Greek film distribution companies and TV channels is also available.
The compilation of a detailed list of most cinemas and screens in Greece could be easily de-
scribed as the most interesting part of this guide. When this research began, it soon became
obvious why a similar listing had not been published about Greek cinemas to date, although
anyone would argue in favor of it. Statistical data were clearly lacking, most of the contact
details available were invalid while the diversity of movie theaters in Greece was more than
enough to confuse anyone. To cut a long story short, were it not for the kind cooperation of
all those involved in the operation of the cinemas in Greece, the gathering of any information
would have been impossible. In the end, a total of 297 cinemas and 493 screens were listed,
with at least one way of contacting the person responsible in each listing, such as a telephone
number, an email or an address. This edition ends with a list of film festivals taking place in
Greece, along with their usual dates and venue, as well as a short presentation of film related
university departments and private schools.
After launching an online public consultation, the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism
introduced a new cinema law in 2010 (Law 3905/Government Gazzette. 219.23.12.2010), re-
placing the former one dating back to 1986. The adoption of a new law on cinema in Greece
could be seen as a sign of a new cultural policy in the film sector, aiming to channel all funds
allocated to film production and assist synergies between film professionals and the private
sector such as companies, TV broadcasters, subscription channels and the telecommunica-
tions industry. The implementation of the cinema law is the next more challenging step for all
those involved in filmmaking.
According to the new cinema law, the Greek Film Centre, a public benefit non profit legal
entity established under private law, remains the principal national organization providing
support for film production in Greece. The Greek Film Centre, supervised by the Hellenic Min-
istry of Culture and Tourism, aims at the protection, support and development of film produc-
tion in Greece, as well as the showcasing, dissemination and promotion of Greek cinemato-
graphic art both domestically and abroad. While retaining its administrative and financial
independence, the members of the Greek Film Centre Board of Directors are appointed by
ministerial decision while the Greek Film Centre General Director is appointed by a decision
of the Minister of Culture and Tourism, following a proposal by the Greek Film Centre Board
of Directors.
The majority of the funding of the Greek Film Centre is used to finance the production, pro-
motion and distribution of feature films, documentaries and short films, focusing mainly on
the support of new Greek directors and film professionals. In 2011, twenty feature films and
documentaries were produced and promoted with the support the Greek Film Centre. The
activities of the Greek Film Centre extend beyond the support of these films in which it par-
ticipates as co-producer. The international department of the Greek Film Centre, Hellas Film,
assists all Greek films that seek worldwide recognition, by taking part in international film fes-
tivals or film markets. In addition, the Greek Film Centre participates in all leading European
programmes and promotes European films worldwide, while it is present at all major festivals
and film markets making Greek films available for festival screenings all over the world.
One of the most interesting parts of the new cinema law is the establishment of a National
Film Commission, designed to operate as a separate department in the Greek Film Centre.
4 F IL M G U ID E G RE E C E
T H E G RE E K F IL M S E C TO R
The aims of the Hellenic Film Commission include the promotion of Greece internationally
as a place suitable for audiovisual productions of every kind and the support of international
audiovisual productions shot in Greece, while the Film Commission will act as intermediary in
providing information and services. This comes after the operation of the Hellenic Film Com-
mission as a pilot project in the context of the Greek Film Centre activities since 2007. Dur-
ing these years, the Hellenic Film Commission aided a host of foreign productions to shoot
in locations all over Greece and started a long-term campaign to engage Greek audiovisual
institutions and local communities in offering incentives and services to foreign film produc-
tions shooting in Greece. The new cinema law also stipulates that a regional film commission
is going to operate in Thessaloniki, aiming to exploit the wide audience and professional out-
reach of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
Ideally, the spirit of the new cinema law could be combined with the approval of a tax
shelter system, established to encourage investment in Greek audiovisual works by private
companies and boost audiovisual production in Greece. According to the new legislation,
taxable persons in Greece (for example VAT-registered individuals or businesses) will be able
to benefit from a tax deduction amounting to 40% of the sum invested in audiovisual works,
provided that their business activities are not part of the audiovisual industry. If taxable per-
sons employed or directly linked to the audiovisual industry wish to invest a sum in film pro-
duction, the percentage of the tax deduction is limited to 20%. The procedure will take place
through the Greek Film Centre, which would provide the mechanism that would ensure the
optimal implementation of the new law.
According to the new cinema law, it is no longer required to obtain a general permit to
shoot in Greece and a film producer will only have to contact the local authorities for per-
mission, depending on the location that shooting takes place. In addition, the Greek state
undertook another initiative in 2011 to streamline the procedures for the issuance of film per-
mits for Greek archaeological sites. One of the most important decisions is the reduction of
filming costs in archaeological sites, from four thousand Euros to one thousand six hundred
Euros. If, however, the shooting is not intended for commercial use (not for a feature film),
and is done for scientific, educational and other relevant uses, the cost is significantly lower.
Accordingly, the new legislation also covers issues of internet use for any audiovisual work
illustrating Greek archaeological sites. In addition, the cost of using audiovisual material from
Greek archaeological sites will depend on the total budget of the film, while the cost could
be lowered if the proposed audiovisual work promotes Greece as a tourist location. The next
target that the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism has set is to ensure that the time needed
to process applications for film permits is reasonable, so that professionals could receive a
permit as soon as possible.

Both major production houses and producers with personal companies are listed together in

each production company is accompanied by a small description, anyone interested could find
out more by checking the details or by visiting the companys website.
This list is by no means complete. Therefore, MEDIA Desk Hellas would welcome the future in-

The surrealist side of a personal crisis against the backdrop of the economic crisis. The film also answers
primordial questions such as: Is dying like taking off or like landing? When your lover cheats on you should
you laugh or cry? Is it better to owe than to be owed to? If there is indeed money, as our prime minister claimed
before he was elected, why are we all broke? And if there is no money, why are we still making films? and
ends up observing that life is nothing more than a constant struggle against the terrible force of gravity.
After their long separation following the death of their son, Alex and Kate meet again on board the oil
tanker Sea Voyager. That same day, Alex rescues thirty adolescent immigrants adrift in the Mediterranean.
No country grants them asylum, while the manager of the nearly bankrupt ship-owner forces Alex to deal
with the situation promptly. But each one of his efforts results in a dead-end. While, some members of the
crew grow fond of certain teenagers, including Kate who takes a second-chance to motherhood with young
Samir, the majority feel that their guests have overextended their welcome. Unable to handle the tension
and wrapped up in his depression, Alex makes a series of wrong decisions, that leave no one unaffected. Until,
ultimately, he finds the courage to rise above the situation.

SCREENS
As the guide is intended for use by film professionals, the listing is organized by location. Cinemas
are divided into four different districts, Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki and other provinces. The list
contains all actual movie theaters, where films are screened using a professional film projector,
while a short description of the technical characteristics exist in each cinema listing. The same cri-
terion was used for municipal movie theaters and local cine clubs, and only those theaters where
films are screened using a professional film projector were included. For example, traditional and
well-established cine clubs such as the ones in Patra, Korydallos and Chania among others were not
included as they currently use venues already included in the list.
Regarding the statistics on the cinemas and the screens that are listed in the guide, please note
that if a cinema includes two indoor screens, then it is counted as one cinema and two screens. If,
however, a cinema includes an indoor and an outdoor screen, then it is counted as two cinemas and
two screens. Lastly, it is obvious that the size of outdoor cinemas and their seats differs from season
to season therefore we have chosen to list the average number.
