QUANTATIVE METHODS OF MANAGEMENT

Graphical Method

Problem:

A company produces two different products. One of them needs 1/4 of an hour of assembly work per
unit, 1/8 of an hour in quality control work and US$1.2 in raw materials. The other product requires
1/3 of an hour of assembly work per unit, 1/3 of an hour in quality control work and US$0.9 in raw
materials. Given the current availability of staff in the company, each day there is at most a total of 90
hours available for assembly and 80 hours for quality control. The first product described has a
market value (sale price) of US$8.0 per unit. In addition, the maximum amount of daily sales for the
first product is estimated to be 200 units, without there being a maximum limit of daily sales for the
second product.
Formulate and solve graphically a Linear Programming model that will allow the company to
maximize profits.

Solution:
Decision Variables:
X1: Product 1 units to be produced daily
X2: Product 2 units to be produced daily

Objective Function:
Maximize (9-1.2)X1 + (8-0.9)X2 = 7.8X1 + 7.1X2

Constraints:

1 2
+ 90
4 3
1 2
+ 80
8 3

1 200

Non-negativity constraints:
1, 2 0

The domain of feasible solutions has 5 vertexes that correspond with the problems optimal
candidates. In particular the optimal vertex is D such that the optimal solution is X1=200 and X2=120
with an optimal value V(P)=7.8(200)+7.1(120)=2,412 that corresponds with the maximum profit for the
company.
Graph:

Answer:
V(P) = 7.8(200) + 7.1(120)
V(P) = 2,412
The maximum profit for the company is Php 2,412.

QUANTATIVE METHODS OF MANAGEMENT

Graphical Method

Problem:
Michigan Polar Products makes downhill and cross country skis. A pair of downhill skis requires 2
man-hours for cutting, 1 man-hour for shaping and 3 man-hours for finishing while a pair of cross
country skis requires 2 man-hours for cutting, 2 man-hours for shaping and 1 man-hour for finishing.
Each day the company has available 140 man-hours for cutting, 120 man-hours for shaping and 150
man-hours for finishing. How many pairs of each type of ski should the company manufacture each
day in order to maximize profit if a pair of downhill skis yields a profit of $10 and a pair of cross
country skis yields a profit of $8?
Solution:
Decision Variables:
x = # pairs of downhill skis
y = # pairs of cross country skis
Objective Function:
P = 10x + 8y
Constraints:
cutting: 2x + 2y 140
shaping: x + 2y 120
finishing: 3x + y 150
Non-negativity Constraints:
x 0, y 0

Elimination Method:
@ cutting: 2x + 2y 140 @ shaping: x + 2y 120 @finishing: 3x + y 150
When x=0 When x=0 When x=0
2(0) + 2y = 140 (0) + 2y = 120 (0) + 2y = 120
y = 70 y = 60 y = 60

when y = 0 when y = 0 when y = 0

2x + 2(0) = 140 x + 2(0) = 140 x + 2(0) = 140
x = 70 x = 140 x = 140

QUANTATIVE METHODS OF MANAGEMENT

Graphical Method

Problem:
The standard weight of a special purpose brick is 5 kg and it contains two basic ingredients B1 and
B2 costs Rs. 8 per kg. Strength considerations dictate that the brick contains not more than 4 kg of
B1 minimum of 2 kg of B2. Since the demand for the product is likely to be related to the price of the
brick, find out graphically minimum cost of the brick satisfying the above conditions.
Solution:
The mathematical formulation of the given LPP is:
Minimize Z = 5x + 8x (Cost function)
Subject to x 4
x 2
x + x = 5
Where x , x 0 (Non negativity)
Making the inequalities of the constraints to equalities for the purpose to plot the above values on the
graph, we get
x = 4 . (a)
x = 2 . (b)
x + x = 5 . (c)
Now in equation (c) , if x = 0 , x = 5
if x = 0 , x = 5
Graph:

Q(3,2)

finishing

Since one of the constraints is equality constraints i.e. x + x=5. There is no solution space rather a
solution point which satisfies all the conditions i.e. point Q (3 , 2) .
Ans. x = 3 , x = 2 , Z = 31
