UNEMPLOYMENT

Unemployment is defined as the situation where someone of working age is not able to get job
but would like to be in full time employment, for example if a mother left a work to bring up a
child or someone went into higher education they are not working but would not be closed as un
employed as they are not actively seeking employment. There are different types of
unemployment like; demand deficient unemployment, structural unemployment, real wage un
employment, fictional unemployment and voluntary unemployment.

CAUSES OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN TANZANIA

Corruption, this is one of the cause of unemployment where by the employers tend to receive
bribes from the people who supposed to be employed even if they are not qualified in those
particular jobs as a result many people who are qualified lack an opportunity of being employed
with the regards of their bribes without considering their qualification.

Nepotism or favoritism, this also is one of the cause of unemployment to many people, where by
the employers focus much on the biases basing on tribalism, regionalism, religionalism as well as
sex. From this sorts of biasness leads to many people who are well qualified to lack employment,
example in different public and private sectors, the employers considers how much they know
you.

Poor education system in Tanzania, education system in Tanzania prepares students to be the
seekers of government employment instead of self employment, but due to a large number of
people who seek for government employment, others lack it and become jobless in the society
and increase number of dependent people in the society.

Poverty among Tanzanians, this also is one of the cause of unemployment in which many people
do not have enough money to control their lives and therefore it become difficult for them to be
employed since because in some of public and private sectors, the managers or the heads of
institutions tend to consider bribes first before employing people. Therefore for poor people
become difficult to be employed since because they have no money to convince employers, as
the result of emerging a large number of unemployment in our country.
Bankruptcy of private institutions, private sectors plays a great role in ensuring employment to
many people, therefore when these sectors fall down economically, then most of the workers will
lack employment since these sectors will no longer be able to runny their own activities, as a
result many people become unemployed.

EFFECTS OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN TANZANIA

Increase of corruption, this is because the government fail to employ the qualified graduates on
time, thus some of the engage in corruption or give bribery, for example selling their body
especially women to the employers so as to get employment.Aprt from that ,others use money to
convince their employers in order to be employed.

Separation of family, due to the excessive problem of unemployment most of family members
separate from each other. For example when husband is unable to provide basic needs to his
family then he tends to run away from his family. In other hand women and children disappear
from their home in order to another alternative way searching for basic needs like food, as
resulted to women engaging in illegal business like prostitution, they do all these for the purpose
of fulfilling the needs in their daily life so as to soften the hardship of life since they have no
employment.

Increase of dependence ratio, this is when a person fail to be employed leads to hardship of life,
whereby the best way he or she decides to go back to his or her family so as to continue
surviving. By doing so it increases the dependence ratio to his or her family.

Increase of crimes in the society, also this is one of the impacts of unemployment in which
people who have no job or work to do tend to engage in illegal activities like robbering, theft,
raping as a result the society suffering from these crimes like Panyaroad group who troubles
people in dare s salaam.
Loss of personal future and dreams, most of Tanzanian students are studying for the sake of
being employed. This is due to educational curriculum which based in theoretical rather than in
practical teaching, thus when the problem of unemployment occurs people lose their future
dreams.

It leads to poor living standard of people, when people become unemployed then they fail to
acquire basic needs such as food, shelter as well as clothes ,due to this the government get a huge
burden to take care of the people with poor economic base and therefore increase the government
expenditure.

WAYS TO OVERCOME UNEMPLOYMENT IN TANZANIA

Population control, the growth of population should be checked in order to solve unemployment
problem, also family planning program should be widely and effectively.

Change in education system, emphasizes should be given to vocational education, the

qualified/graduated students should start their own small unit.

More assistance to self employed people, this person should help financially, proving raw
materials and technical training; this can encourage people to engage in self employment.

Expansion of employment exchange, more employment should be opened; information regarding

employment opportunities should be given to people.

Increase in production, to increase employment is essential to increase production in agriculture

and industrial sectors. Development of cottage and small industries should be encouraged, these
industries will increase employment opportunities to people found in a specific area, these
industries includes shoe making industries.

Generally, unemployment is still a challenge to most of African countries especially Tanzania,

therefore in order to solve this problem ,the education system should promote self employment
to the students and also people should have strong work ethics and avoid selectivity in works.
Through this measure we can solve the problem of employment in our country.
