NYT Presentation Rubric

Being informed about current events around the globe is vital for you as a college student and citizen of
the world. Because of that, we want you to get used to obtaining information from reliable sources, other
than the usual social media means to which you have grown accustomed. More important, by reading the
news from better journalistic sources, we want you to be exposed to: 1) good writing; 2) proper grammar;
and 3) more sophisticated vocabulary. By reading better texts, you will certainly be able to incorporate the
three aspects above into your own writing.

The New York Times (we will refer to it as NYT) is an American daily newspaper, founded and published
in New York City since September 18, 1851, by The New York Times Company. The New York Times
has won 117 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other news organization. The paper's print version has one of
the largest circulation among the metropolitan newspapers in the United States of America. For more, go

In EAP II, you and your classmates will have the opportunity to lead one individual presentation on
relevant news.

Objectives:
Students will demonstrate ability to select, summarize, and synthesize relevant and interesting topics from
the New York Times and present them during a short class presentation.
Students will also demonstrate their organization skills and ability to conduct their presentation in a
professional and engaging way.
Pecha Kucha style, timed presentations will help students practice rehearsing and timing their speeches
effectively. To lean about this presentation style, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Points Description
Possible
Content 30
You should initiate your presentation by engaging your classmates on the
topic you are going to present. That could be done by asking a question,
giving an example, or a personal anecdote.
You must have a visual aid which uses images to illustrate your points: You
can go back to the New York Times website and/or add images from other
sites to your presentation to make it more interesting. The Pecha Kucha
part of your presentation will be 12-15 slides with 20 seconds of time on
each slide. This will total 4-5 minutes of your presentation. Remember
Pecha Kucha slides DO NOT have complete sentences or long phrases on
them.
The remaining minutes of your presentation must include a multimedia
element. This could be an informative video that adds to the news, etc. You
must then explain the connection between the video and your NYT article
presentation.
Your presentation should include: 1) the main idea and facts about the news
you chose; 2) the relevance of this news to you and to your classmates; 3) a
brief conclusion on why you chose this topic to present on.
The topic should be relevant and current. Avoid controversial topics that
might cause unnecessary stress for you: in doubt, discuss your choice with
me beforehand.
Oral 20
Your entire presentation should last from 10 to 15 minutes.
Presentation
You should use proper register, a clear and loud voice, and avoid gap
fillers/slang such as Its like, I mean, You know, Like. These fillers will make
you sound unprofessional and unprepared.
When in doubt, BE MORE FORMAL than you think is necessary.
