In the first observation, which can be found 00:22 into the video, I discuss with the
student his progress on the research project that he has selected for the World War II Unit. The
student has selected the option to research a family member and their involvement in the Second
World War. This assignment closely relates to the information that I read about in the
Underlying Power of Homework article by Gonzalez 2012, in which the author stresses the
importance about assigning meaningful homework that can help to establish connections and
working relationships between the families and schools. This assignment does exactly this, as
the student will be able to see the difference that his family member made for the country and
will allow a stronger connection between the student, their family, and the school district
(Gonzalez, 2012).
In the second observation, which is 03:10 into the video, I am working with a student that
has selected the Cold War and the use of the atomic bomb as a topic. I could demonstrate with
the student my knowledge on the subject and content of his selected topic. I also provided him
with insight and information that was relatable on the student level, that helped him to narrow his
topic and provided the student with the means to research and write about the selected topic. The
research that I conducted for the second observation and what can be found in the video closely
resembles that from the Science of Teaching from the Gee, 2014, article that discusses fifteen
principles of good teaching. In the video clip at 03:10, the fourteenth principle of good teaching
is demonstrated in which I used my knowledge and understanding of the subject and content
information and related it to an event that the student could comprehend and use to complete the
In the third observation, which begins 05:37 into the video, I am continuing to work with
a student on the essay project about the atomic bomb. While working with the student, I am
demonstrating the establishing a culture for learning with the student. The observation in the
video closely aligns with the readings and research that I have conducted this week. The Science
of Teaching from Gee, 2014, discusses fifteen principles of good teaching; which are guidelines
for teachers to ensure that the best educational practices are in place for optimized learning for
each student. In the portion of the video, I am providing the student with feedback and
information to create an environment that is more conducive to learning. Providing the student
with timely feedback and additional information to consider allows the student to comprehend
the elements that are necessary to be successful when writing essays and other research items.
Because of timely feedback in the environment, the student could optimize the opportunity and
complete his essay over the project, which highlighted the information that I provided and
additional information that the student sought on his own (Gee, 2014).
