1. The National Internal Revenue Code of the Philippines, also known as the Tax
Reform Act of 1997 is the law establishing the system of national taxation in the Philippines.
The most recent extensive revision of the Code occurred in 1997, although the Code was
amended in 2005 to expand the coverage and rates of value-added tax.
The taxes imposed by the Code include a graduated income tax on all income earned by
natural and juridical persons within the Philippines, a capital gains tax, excise tax on certain
products, a donor's tax, an estate tax, and a value-added tax on the sale of most goods and
services in the Philippines.

3. The Revised Penal Code of the Philippines. The Revised Penal Code criminalizes a
whole class of acts that are generally accepted as criminal, such as the taking of a life
whether through murder or homicide, rape, robbery and theft, and treason. The Code also
penalizes other acts which are considered criminal in the Philippines, such as adultery,
concubinage, and abortion. The Code expressly defines the elements that consist each
crime, and the existence all these elements have to be proven beyond reasonable doubt in
order to secure conviction.
4. The Civil Code of the Philippines. The Civil Code is divided into 5 books, with a
specific book covering persons and family relations; property; succession; obligations and
contracts; and special contracts. Special contracts encompasses several classes of contracts
as sales, agency, and partnership. The law on torts and damages is found in Book V,
although developments in tort and damages law have been guided less by the Code than by
judicial precedents.

and termination of private employees; the conditions of work including maximum work
hours and overtime; employee benefits such as holiday pay, thirteenth month pay and
retirement pay; and the guidelines in the organization and membership in labor unions as
well as in collective bargaining.
The Labor Code contains several provisions which are beneficial to labor. Private employees
cannot be terminated from employment except for just or authorized causes as prescribed in
Article 282 to 284 of the Code. The right to trade union is expressly recognized, as is the
right of a union to insist on a closed shop. Strikes are also authorized for as long as they
comply with the strict requirements under the Code, and workers who organize or

has long applied a rule that any doubts in the interpretation of law, especially the Labor
