Special Issue on New Frontiers in Software

Architecture
Since the early 1990s, software architecture has been subject of increasing interest in
software engineering research and practice. Three classic reasons why architecture is
important to software systems are: (1) architecture provides a basis for creating mutual
understanding about the software system; (2)
architecture design decisions have the most signicant
inuence on system qualities; and (3) architecture
provides a reusable abstraction of a system that is
transferable to other systems with similar requirements
promoting large-scale reuse. In the last decade, the
awareness has grown that the decision making process is
central to architectural design, as manifested in the notions of rational and
architecture knowledge.

Despite the maturity of the eld, software architecture does not escape from the
impact of the ever-changing world in which we live. The need for on the y re-
congurability and self-adaptation to deal with new emerging user requirements
poses severe challenges to software architects. New developments such as the cloud,
virtualization, big data, ultra-large scale systems, long-lived systems and systems-of-
systems require new architecture solutions.

OBJECTIVES AND TOPICS

The aim of this special issue is to document new frontiers in software architecture
and outline the challenges for the coming years. We invite high-quality submissions
on innovative trends in software architecture. All submissions should consider the
practical application of the idea through case studies, experiments, empirical
validation, or systematic comparisons with other approaches already in practice.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to:

- New developments in architectural design, analysis and evaluation

- Management of architectural knowledge, decisions, and rationale

- Innovative architecture-centric process models and frameworks

- Software architecture and agility

- Architecture-centric model driven engineering

- Architectures for recongurable and self-adaptive systems

- Architectures for ultra-large scale, long-lived systems and systems-of-systems

- Software architecture and the cloud

- Software architecture and virtualization

- Software architecture and big data

- Architectures for cyber-physical systems

- Architectural concerns of autonomic systems

- Software architecture and system architecture, including software-dened

networking

- Software tools and environments for architecture-centric software engineering

- Industrial applications, case studies, best practices and experience reports

- Empirical studies, systematic literature reviews and mapping studies in software

architecture.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION

All manuscripts and any supplementary material should be submitted through the
Elsevier Editorial System at www.elsevier.com/locate/jss/
(http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jss/) . Follow the submission instructions given on this
site. Please select the article type as "SI: Frontiers in SA". Abstracts should be emailed
to the guest editors before the full manuscript submission deadline (email:
FrontiersInSA@cs.kuleuven.be). All manuscripts should be compliant with the
journal's submission guidelines. Papers should be between 15 to 20 pages in the nal
publication format. Detailed author guidelines are available
at www.elsevier.com/locate/jss/ (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jss/) . Manuscripts
must not have been published previously or be currently under consideration for
publication in any other journal or conference.

DECISIONS

Submissions will be reviewed by at least three experts in the eld. Primary evaluation
criteria are: high-quality of the submission, innovative aspects to the domain of
software architecture, practical application of the proposed idea, and thorough
evaluation. The guest editors in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief and the Special
Issues Editor will make nal decisions.
