ItalwaysfeltcompletelydifferentfromJerryMaguire.Imean,physically,Tomwantedtoabsolutelychangeand BoughtaZoo
workonthemakeup,whichweworkedonforalongtime.WewantedthedisfiguredDavidAamestobesoreal
andhuman,thatitwouldbeanexplosivereinventionofTom.Weworkedveryhardtokeephimhiddenfrom
paparazzi.Tubeswerebuiltinthestreethecouldwalkthroughwithoutgettinghispicturetaken.Wefeltwewere
onajourneytodosomethingverydifferent,possiblysubversive,butabsolutelyacontinuationofthe
collaboration.Tomissomuchaboutcharacter,andIlovecharacterssomuch.Davidwasabrandnewguy,butwe
werestilltellingAmenbarsstory.VanillaSkyiskindofahorrorstoryaboutbeingcaughtinthenetherworldof
techandpopculture.Whatishumanitywhensomuchofpopcultureshapesourimages,ourhopes,anddreams?

TomCruisesperformanceissoegoless.ThereprobablyarentmanyAlistactorswhodplaya
characterwithafacialdisfigurementandhavethatmaskonforalotofthemovie,whilealso
playingafairlyunlikableguy.Itsaverycommittedperformance.

Itisacommittedperformanceitsalsoaveryfunnyperformance.Tomdidnotshyawayfromselfdeprecation,
wantingtomakecommentsabouthisownselfimageinculture.Inmanydifferentways,heslaughingathimself
andspoofinghimself,evenspoofingsomeofhisownmovementsinJerryMaguire.Youknow,JerryMaguire
wouldgetveryphysicalandtheatricalHelpmehelpyou!andwasverytheatricalwithhishandmovements.
DavidAamesiskindofthesame,whenhebustsout,Oh,themaskwillworkreallywellonHalloween,butwhat
abouttheotherdaysoftheyear?

Wedefinitelydidntknowhowpeopleweregoingtoreact.Idontthinkwewerequitepreparedforthekindof
tumultuousreactionthatitcaused[Laughs],andapartofthatwasitwassocloseto9/11andtheotherpartisit
waskindofsoldasaFatalAttractiontypeofmovie,atrianglewithacrazygirl.Infact,itwassodifferentfrom
that,challenging,andnotwhatpeopleexpected,whichwasmoreofJerryMaguirefromus.

Ithinkofallthemovieswevemadethisisthepunkrockset,becauseweweremovingreallyfast.Wedidnthave
timetooverthinkanything,wewentintoitprettyquicklyafterAlmostFamous,andgotitdoneveryquickly.
Therewasnooverthinkingorsecondguessing,butsomeofthathappenedlaterwhenwestartedshowingthe
movieintestscreenings,whichexplainswhytherestwodifferentendings.

Whatsthedifferentending?Diditgetcutbecauseofthetestscreenings?

Itsadifferentversionofthesameending,butitsalittlemorechallengingandlessisexplained.Youwantpeople
tounderstandwhatyouregoingfor,sothequestionis,lookingatbothendings:Didthependulumswingtoo
muchinthedirectionofusexplainingstuff?Ithinkitdid.Theoriginalendingwasmoreopenended,alittleless
explained,andhadalittlemoreKurtRussell.WehadthisonetakeofKurtdissemblingasapersonwejustfellin
lovewith,andthatsontheBluRay.Wealwaysdreamedofputtingthoselittlenuggetsoutthatmeantsomuchto

uswhilemakingthemovie.KurtRussellsperformancenowexistsinamorecompleteform,whichImreally
happyabout.

Itwasntliketheendingwascompromiseditwasjustspelledoutabitmore.OvertimeIthinkpeoplearemore
opentothequestionslingering.PostSopranosworld,whereitcanendwithTonySopranocuttingtoblack,
peoplearemoreattunedtobringingimpressionstoashockingending.Theendingweendedupdoingwasalittle
moremakingsureweputaspotlightonwhatwewantedtosay.MichaelShannonhadamoreviolentconclusion,
andmoreofMichaelShannonisalwaysagoodthing.[Laughs]Youjustgettoseemorepiecesofthepuzzles.

ImgladyourefertoVanillaSkyaspunkrock,becausewhenitcameout,mydadwasnotafanof
themovie,butinapunkrockway,Ienjoyedthinking,Well,youdontgetit,butIgetit.

[Laughs]Ilovethat!ThefansofVanillaSkyaresoadamantandreallypassionateaboutit.Themailwevealways
gottenforitisfromstrippers,doctors,andrappers.[Laughs]IthinkKanyerappedaboutitreallyearlyon,too.It
waskindofthefirsttimeIexperiencedthedivisivereception.Irememberwewereonthisworldwidepresstour,
becauseheissogoodattakingamoviearoundtheworld,andtherewasawriterinAustraliaIhadntreadmany
ofthereviews,buttherewasawriterinAustraliawhocamein,satdown,andsaid,Boy,Ibetyouwerentready
tobecalledsomeofthesenames.Iwaslike,Whatnames?Hesaid,Ohboy,getready![Laughs]LaterIread
whathewasreferringto.Somepeoplewerereallyupinarms,whileotherpeople,likeRogerEbert,werereally
withus.Overtime,itsfounditsplace.Thedaysrightafter9/11whenwewereshowingthemovie,whenTom
jumpsoffthatbuilding,youcouldfeelthewavegoovertheaudience.Peoplewereelectrified,whetherpositiveor
negative.Thatwaskindofamazing.

WhenwespokeforAlohayoumentionedthatVanillaSkywasthefilmyoupackedwiththemost
details.Whyisthat?

Well,thisisoneofthethingsthatwasoneofthebigdrawstomakingittoworkwithJohnTollagainandpack
theframe,likewedidwithAlmostFamous.Wewantedtopacktheframewithclues,shades,andtextures,soyou
couldsay,Nothingintheframeisanaccident.ThestuffonDavidAameswallswereassembledbyhim,ashe
wascreatinghisnewvirtuallife,andtheyreallcomments.IsitaJulesandJimorBreathlessposterinhis
apartment?

JulesandJim.

Yeah,thatcomesbacktobeingoneofthethingsthatwasoneofstatementsaboutwhatlovecouldbe.Ilikedthe
opportunitytobeacompletefilmmakerinthatway,tobealittlemorecinematic.Wewantedtohavesomevisual
tricksupoursleeve,inthesetdressing,style,andeverything.IlovethatwehavetheFreewheelingBobDylan
albumcoverreferenceinthere.IhaddonesomeinterviewswithBobDylanearlyon,buthismainguyand
manager,JeffRosen,onthesetofMaskedandAnonymous,reintroducedmetohim.DylanwenttoseeVanilla
Skyinthetheater,andhesaid,Iwassittingtherewatchingit,thinking,Ivebeenherebefore.Then,Irealized,I
wastherebefore![Laughs]Gettinghimwithsomeofthesubliminalmessageswascool.Thatwasthedreamto
makeitapopcultureartexperiencewhereitjustwhippedyourheadaroundinaslightlydifferentway,depending
onwhatyouwerelookingatwheneveryoucaughtitagain.

TherewasanaccidentmadewiththetagsonDavidscar,whichcontainadatethatdoesntexist.
Aretheremoreaccidentslikethatinthemovie?

Well,thatsapartwhereifyoucreate,flavorsstarttoappearthatbelongthere.Thatwasonehappyaccident.A
scaryaccidentwastheTwinTowerswereinashotsoobviouslyattheend.Therewasabigdiscussionabouttaking
themout,butmyfeelingwasweshouldntdestroythemagain,theyshouldbethere,andliveon.InDavidAames
purchaseofthislife,theTwinTowersarethere.Iwouldvebeenreally,reallydisappointedtolookbackandfind
wemissedthechancetohaveatributethere.

Itfeelslikeapost9/11movie.Somuchofthefilmisaboutmovingforwardorattemptingto
explainwhatwentwrong.

Thatssotrue.Itwasmadewithalotoflove,humor,andfun.Wehadablastmakingit,butitseerie.Themovieis
muchmoreeeriethanitfeltmakingit.Ithinkmoviesalwaysgetapersonalityontheirown,nomatterwhatyou
do,andyoujusthavetosetthetableandseewhattexturesarriveasyourdinnerguests.Eventhestuffthatwas
funnytousatthetimewas,asyousay,apost9/11ideaofsomethinghappened.

ItsalsoeeriehowmuchVanillaSkyisaboutGod.

ThatswhytheJoanOsbornesongWhatIfGodWasOneUs?wasthere.ItwasjustathemeIwantedtohave
present.WhatroledoesGodandreligionhavewhenyoureabletocreatelifeonyourown?Thatsortofmakes
youyourownpersonalGod.Howdoyoumaintainyourownkingdom?WhoseGoddoyouservewhenyoure
takingonthatresponsibility?IwenttoCatholicschool,soalltheseideasarecirclingaroundinmyhead.Idont
thinkwetalkedaboutitalotmakingthefilm,butitfeltliketherewasanopportunitytoexplorethat.

Theresalsothewholepopcultureslant,whichIthinkbecomesmoreandmoreanissue.Whatdoyouacquire
frompopcultureasyourebuildingyourownlife?Whatisbasedonrealityandwhatisbasedonyourvisionof
whatyousawonce,thatbecameyourdreamofwhatyouwantrealitytobe?Howdoyoureconcilethem?Its
tough,particularlyifyourelivinginaworldwhereyourewatchingalotofmovies.[Laughs]Youkindofwantto
getlostintheworldofmovies,withimages,impulses,andfeelings.Sometimesitstoughtoleavethemovie
theaterorcloseyourcomputer.

scenesyouthoughtaboutrewritingonVanillaSky?

No.ThereisalineIwassorrytoseego,butImhappytoseeitsback[ontheBluRay].Intheoriginal
ending,NoahTaylorsaid,Yourequestedandpurchasedallofthis,David.Youevenaskedforathemesong
fromPaulMcCartney,whichisveryhardtoacquire![Laughs]Imnotsurewhywelostit,butwhenIsawit
backintheoriginalending,Iwassohappy.ItsmoreNoahTaylorandlikeMichaelShannonyoucantget
enoughofhim.

TheotherdayIreadanoldinterviewyoudidwithTomCruise.Wasthatthefirsttimeyoutwo
met?

No,thefirsttimewemetwasatapartythrownbythecastattheveryendofFastTimesatRidgemontHigh.They
hadalwaystalkedaboutthisfriendoftheirs,whowasmakinghisownmovieinChicago.Therewerentabunchof
teenmoviesforthemalltofallinto,soeveryoneauditionedforourmovie.JenniferJasonLeighwasafriendof
Toms,EricStoltzandSeanPennknewhim,andeveryonewastalkingaboutthisfriendoftheirsonthishuge
trajectory.Hewasntinateenmoviehewasthestarofamoviemovie.Cruiseshowedupatthisparty,anditwas
likebabyDavidAames.Theguyownedthepartyhewalkedin,hadsomethingtosaytoeverybody,andhewas
electricandcharismatic.Youcouldnttakeyoureyesoffthisguy.ThiswasTom,theguytheywerealltalking

fanandhasworkedwithsomeofthebestdirectors,itssurprisinganddisappointinghehasnt
directedafilmyet.

Hesayshehasahardtimeviewinghimselfthathecantviewhimselfdispassionately,likesomeactorscan.Tom
dependsonthedirectorforthat.Heknowseverybitofthescript,everybitofthecharacter,everythingaboutthe
movie,andeverythingaboutlensesandangles.Theonethinghesaysishedependsonthedirectortoshapehis
performance,andhestheworldsgreatestcollaboratorinthatway.Hesays,Iamtheinstrument.Iwillplay
whateveryouwantmetoplay.Letsgetinthereanddoit.Letshavefun.Thatstheexperienceyougetworking
withTom.

SinceTomwastheproduceronVanillaSky,hewasreallyhavingfunbuildingthisstoryandmovie,buthewas
verygenerousinhowhewasgoingtoletmecreatetheperformanceinwhateverwaythatwasthrillingtome.Hes
averydemonstrativeguy,sowhenyourehappy,heshappy.Theresnotafurrowedbrowonthesetwhenthings
aregoingrealwell,whichtheynormallyare,becauseheinspirespeople.Hesaguythatlikesjoyandinvitesjoyin
theprocess.Helookstoyouandsays,Wasthatallright?Istheremoreyouwant?Doyouwanttodoitanother
way?Letsnotleavethisifyoudonthaveeverything.Areyousure?Thinkaboutit.Theresalwaysamoviewhere
yougo,Well,ifyougotanotheroneinyouHellsay,Igotamillionmoreinme.Illgoallnightlong.
[Laughs]Hecananddoes!Thedaygenerallydoesntenduntileveryscrapisexamined,used,anddoneforthe
movie.Everythingthatcouldpossiblybeusedtomakethemoviebetterhestheretomakesureyouuseit.

Hesstrangelyunderratedforahugemoviestar.Maybebecausehedoesntphysically
transformthewayDanielDayLewisdoes,hedoesntgetthecredithedeserves,butdisappearing
withoutthatkindoftransformationthatmustbejustasdifficult,ifnotmoreso.

Itstrue.Hebuildsthisbodyofwork,movieaftermovie,andcharacteraftercharacter.Hegivesyouthisbodyof
workthatsrichandpersonal.Heputshimselfintoeveryoneofthesemovies.Foraguywhossouniversally
known,hesnotafraidofgettingpersonal,eveninamovielikeOblivion.ThesceneontheEmpireSateBuildingis
soromanticandemotional.Heputshisheartoutthere,anditbecomessomemorableovertime.Youseethese
performanceswheretheguyisjustvulnerable,andsometimesitshardtoseebecausetheTomCruiseofitallis
socommandingatthecenterofthemovie.Youseemoreofitthesecondtime.

ImetClintEastwoodonce.IaskedhimaboutChrisPenn,becausehehadworkedwithChrisPennonPaleRider.
WeweretalkingaboutwhatanamazingguyChrisPennwas,andforsomereason,wegotonthesubjectofTom.
ClintEastwoodsaid,100yearsfromnowandmore,peoplewilllookbackonthisgenerationoffilms,andtheguy
whowillstandoutmorethananyoneelsewillbeTomCruise.ComingfromClintEastwood,like,afootanda
halfawayfromyoutellingyouthat,IcouldntwaittotellTomthat![Laughs]Ithinkitstrue.Youcouldcreatean
argumentforanumberofotheractors,butIdontknowanyonewhosbuiltthiskindofbodyofworkinmovies
thatwillstandthetestoftime,andIwouldbehonoredifoneofourmovieswasapartofthat.Hesdonesomany
different,timedefiningprojects.

Elizabethtownisturning10yearsoldthisyear.Isthereanychancethatfilmortheextendedcut
willgetaBluRayreleaseinthenearfuture?

Idloveit.Ineverdidacommentaryonit.Weneverputouttheoriginalcut.Onceagain,overtime,Ithinkthat
moviehasfounditsplace.Ithinkthepeoplewholovethatmovie,Ithinktheydreallylovethelongerversion.Its
amoregeneroustellingofthestory.Theresmoretoeveryaspectofit.Itstretchesouttotellthetalemore.Inthe
worldofenhancedbonuseditionsofalbumsyoumaylikeImean,IlovedgettingalltheversionsofFleetwood
MacsTusk,whichwasafansdream.IfyoulikeElizabethtown,wehaveatonofmorestuffforthatmovie.Im
justreallygratefulforthepeoplethatappreciatethatmovienowmorethanever,becauseitsastoryaboutmy
dadandallthosefeelingsattachedtomydad.Whenpeoplesayorwritetheyfollowedtheroadtrip
toElizabethtownortheylostalovedoneandthemoviewasthereforthemwhentheyneededsomethingtohelp
themout,Ithink,Wow,thatsthereasonthemoviegotmade.

BothElizabethtownandVanillaSkyshowthatamazingfeelingwhenyouconnectwithsomeone
overonenight,butIvealwayswondered:ifWill(OrlandoBloom)gotintoacaraccident,like
DavidAames,wouldClaire(KirstenDunst)stilllikehim?Woulditbecometoorealtoofast?

[Laughs]Letsdoamashup!Whatsfunnyaboutbothofthemoviesistheresathreadtotheromanticcomedies

Happiness,tome,isearnedjoyandthatcancomeinlife,family,andwritingsomethingandseeingitfallinto
thehandsofperfectactorswhobringittolife.Happinessiswhenyouworkhardtofollowyourheartandlife
rewardsyouwithglimpsesofheaven.Thatshappinesstome.Thatskindofwhatallmymoviesareabout.
