Mines on the up

Anglo Platinum reported a six-fold increase in first-half profit on Monday, aided by
higher metal prices and forecast an increase in production.
AngloPlat, said it expected to refine and sell a total of 2,5-million ounces of
platinum and it would keep unit cash costs per equivalent refined platinum ounce
around last year’s levels.
The company said headline earnings for the six months to end-June rose 532
percent to R2,6-billion.
The company forecast production of platinum to increase to an average of 7,0 m2
for 2010, 7,3 m2 for 2011. The company said it expects the price of platinum to
average at least $1 500/oz, if South Africa’s economic recovery continues.
Gross sales revenue increased by R3,7-billion to R20,9-billion. Anglo Platinum’s
CEO, Neville Nicolau, said on Monday Eskom was positioned to meet the growth
requirements of Anglo Platinum. He said that a study showed that Angloplat’s
growth-related electricity requirements would be met, even in the event of further
delays to the Eskom’s own capital build programme.
“Certainly, in terms of our interaction with Eskom, I am pretty confident that we’ll
be able to manage the ongoing relationship.”
In terms of the overall requirements for the next ten years, electricity was not a
constraint “directly”, but rather an aspect that the company sought to manage “quite
carefully”.
Ferrochrome production increases as well
On the ferrochrome side rising ferrochrome demand has pushed the Xstrata-Merafe
chrome venture to produce 149 percent more product during the first half of this
year.
Ferrochrome output rose to 157 000 t for the six months ended June 30, 2010,
compared with the 63 000 t produced in the six months ended June 2009.
Xstrata noted that the strengthening of the rand against the dollar, as well as the
higher domestic electricity costs, had enabled ferrochrome producers to achieve a 35%
quarter-on-quarter increase in the European benchmark ferrochrome price.
Not all that rosy
Meanwhile the rest of the economy is still feeling the aftershocks of the recession.
“The news that a further 61 000 jobs were lost in the second quarter of 2010, on
top of the 171 000 jobs which disappeared during the first quarter, and the 870 000
last year, amounting to a colossal 1102 000 since the beginning of 2009, will cause
many workers to question whether 16 years of democracy have done them any good
at all,” Cosatu said after the release of the most recent job statisticts by Statistics SA.
Cosatu said these latest job statics reveals that 5.5 million additional people have
been plunged into a life of poverty, misery and destitution in just 18 months.

Massive career exhibition held This week saw what was probably the
biggest career ehibition ever in the area.
This exhibition was hosted by Marula
Platinum Mine, Twickenham Platinum
Mine, Asa Metals (Dilokong Chrome Mine
and Smelter) and Modikwa Platinum
Mine on Modikwa’s premises.
Pupils from schools in the area were
bused to the venue where all their
questions regarding a future, not only in
mining, but other related fields as well,
were answered. At the opening, on
Tuesday, all the exhibitors and
representatives of the mines’
management’ were present, it was stated
that learners should be informed about all
the opportunities in the biggest industry
in their area. At the same time they can
be informed about what qualifications
they should aspire to achieve in various
fields. The mines also said it is the ideal
to invest locally in education so that
expertise can be drawn from a local
human resources, further contibuting to
the economic upliftment in the area.
The mines plan to present the Eastern
Limb Human Resources Development
Career Exhibition anually from now on.

Ngululu cares
Last week Friday, Ngululu Bulk Carriers from Steelpoort held a function at Ga-Malekane where they
distributed more than 150 blankets to residents of the area. Ngululu CEO, Mr Freddy Sinthumule,
traditional leaders, municipal officials and emloyees of Ngululu attended the function.
The company wanted to contribute something to the area in which they operate and has now started a
three year project. They are not only distributing blankets, but also donating school uniforms, school
shoes and the necessary jerseys to keep pupils from the area warm. They will also be keeping tabs on the
children to monitor their progress in school. 50 Families were identified with the help of the Kgoshi in
each village where the donations
are given. After the official part of
the function the guests were
entertained with a special meal.

On 25 July Tubatse Police launched a Community Policing Forum structre in Praktiseer.

The launching was held at Itirele Primary school and it was led by Captainan TP Nemaitoni.
On the day four CPF members were elected for Praktiseer Central as follows: Mr Mandla
Ngwane, Miss Mapule Mathelele, Mr Victor Komane and Miss Yolandah Magabe. The
other members will be elected on 01 August for Dark City, Shushumela Extension Two
and Extension Three. Thereafter all the elected members will form a CPF committee for

Crime Snippets
* A 20-year old man was arrested for housebreaking and theft in Praktiseer.
He allegedly broke into a house on 24 July. The theft was reported to the
SAPS in Tubatse on 25 July and they managed to trace and arrest the
suspect. They also recovered stolen items such as clothes and blankets from
him.
He appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 26 July and was
granted R1000 bail. He must appear in court again on 18 August 2010.
* A man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on 25 July was arrested and

Cellphone business robbed
On 22 June the unknown men, aged between 20 and 30 years, robbed a number of
cellphones in Burgersfort at gunpoint. According to Warrant Officer Godfrey Mohale of
Burgersfort Police Station, one suspect entered the shop in the central business area and
pretended to be a customer. When the shop owner tried to be of assistance, he pointed a
gun at the owner of the shop. Two other men who entered the shop with the man who
pointed the gun, instructed the rest of the staff to go into the store room. In the store
room they took the shop’s keys as well as 16 cellphones. The also robbed the employees
of the shop of four of their personal phones, valued at R7949. All three suspects escaped
with their loot and are still at large. Anyone with any information that can assist the
Police is requested to phone 082 402 8960 or 013 231 7231.

assaulted his ex-girlfriend at Riba Cross (Mandela Village).
This happened on 25 July. He was arrested on the same day and appeared
in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 27 July. He was released with a
warning and must be in court again on 1 September 2010.
* Shanana Matemane and Auto Mokgethwa was this week sentenced to four
months imprisonment without the option of a fine after they were found
guilty of assaulting a 45-year old man.
They assaulted the man on 24 February at Mahlashi Village. The
sentencing took place at the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 26 July 2010.

Thousands at Winter Festival Eastern Chrome Mines’ Winter

Festival in Steelpoort was extremely
well attended with more than 2 000
visitors going through the gates on
last week Saturday.
It was the first year the festival was
organised and good attendance this
year could possibly result in the event
becoming an annual festival. There
was loads to do for young and old. A
total of 32 teams particiapted in the
potjiekos competition, the Miss and
Mr Winter Festival had various
winners in different categories and
the live entertainment created a
relaxed atmosphere.

Winter fun
at festival
The Winter Festival that took place last week Saturday drew large crowds through the
gates at Winterveld Village. There was much to do with a potjiekos competition, Miss and
Mr Winter Festival, live entertainment by William Blackrose, Jakkie Louw and Jaco
Labuschagne. There was also lots of fun activities for the children. TVE displayed their
cranes and lifted Platinum Gazette high to take an aerial shot of the festivities.

Joshua Generation is full of achievers
Joshua Generation is very active with
athletics this term. They recently received
financial support to buy various items
needed for their athletics training.
The school thanked Tubatse Chrome for
the equiment they’ve sponsored.
Werner Smulders wrote is SAT

examination in June and received the
results in July. This examination gives
pupils exemption to do further studies at
university. A minimum of 1600 marks are
needed to achieve exemption and Werner
scored 1820 out of a possible 2 400. The
main focus of the examination is on

mathematics and English language.

USA during May. She received a silver
medal for her needlework and
dressmaking. She participated in the

Is a strong opposition needed and

This week negotiations between the
Democratic Alliance (DA) and the
Independent Democrats (ID) to form a
coalition was well on track.
The parties are talking about coalition
forming in an attempt to take on the ANC
in next year’s election.
Although the details are still being ironed
out, the general consensus was that the
parties will work together to create a
strong opposition.
The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) leader, Dr
Pieter Mulder also indicated that should
there be talks of coalition forming, his
party and the ACDP should also be
included.

stronger opposition is needed and why.

Die Pumaspan het teen die Griffins gewen met 5-3. Hulle wen die Griekwas 15-5 en die

Buffels karnuffel Loskop
Die Buffels rugbyspan van Steelpoort het verlede week Saterdag ‘n wedstryd teen Loskop Rugby Klub van Groblersdal gespeel.
Die wedstryd het by Winterveld woongebied se sportgronde waar die Winterfees gehou is, plaasgevind. Dit het beteken dat die Buffels van
die beste ondersteuning nog by ‘n wedstryd gekry het.
Die Misty Knights motorfietsryers het vir die spelers ‘n erewag met brullende enjins gevorm. Terwyl die spanne opgewarm het, het die
motorfietsryers ook die toeskouers vermaak deur die motorfietse te laat brul en die wiele te draai dat die rook trek.
Die Buffels het nie met hulle laat sukkel nie en hoewel daar vir beide spanne redelik beserings was, het die Buffels uiteindelik met die
louere weggestap.
Die Buffels het genoeg wedstryde gespeel om as ‘n klub te registreer en aan die liga deel te neem.Die klub sal in die toekoms verskeie
wedstryde tuis speel en belangstellendes is welkom aan te sluit of hulle te kom ondersteun.
