Purpose
ThestudentsofSt.LouisParkPublicSchoolsdeserverespectfulandinclusive
learningenvironmentsthatvaluestudentsgenderidentityandgenderexpression.
St.LouisParkPublicSchoolsensuresthatallstudentshaveaccesstoprogramming
andfacilitiesinwhichtheyfeelcomfortableandsafe.
Thispolicyaddressestheinequitiessomestudents,includingintersex,transgender,
andgendernonconformingstudents,confrontastheynavigateasystemdesigned
usingagenderbinarymodel.
De initions
1. Genderreferstothesociallyconstructedroles,behaviors,activities,and
attributesthatagivensocietyattachestofemininityormasculinity.
2. GenderBinaryreferstothesocialconstructionofagenderdichotomy
betweenmasculinityandfemininity.Thegenderbinaryoftenignoresor
denigratesalternategenderconstructions.
3. GenderExpressionreferstothemannerinwhichpersonsrepresentor
expressgendertoothers,oftenthroughbehavior,clothing,hairstyles,
activities,voice,ormannerisms.
4. GenderIdentityreferstoapersonsdeeplyheldsenseorknowledgeofhisor
herowngender.
5. GenderNonconformingisatermforpersonswhosegenderexpression
differsfromstereotypicalexpectation.Thisincludespersonswhoidentify
outsidetraditionalgendercategoriesoridentifyasbothgenders.
6. Sexreferstoapersonsbiologyandisgenerallycategorizedasmale,female,
orintersex.
7. Intersexreferstoacombinationoffeaturesthatdistinguishmaleandfemale
anatomy.
8. Transgenderisanadjectivedescribingpersonswhosegenderidentityor
expressionisdifferentfromthattraditionallyassociatedwiththesexatbirth.
EnsureGenderInclusiveness
St.LouisParkPublicSchoolsstaffandsystemsensureinclusiveaccessto
programmingandfacilities.Inaccordancewithprocedure,theDistrictwill:
1. Respectallstudentsgenderidentityandgenderexpressionbyhonoring
therightofstudentstobeidenti iedandaddressedbytheirpreferred
nameandpronoun.
2. Withinacademicprograming,prohibittheseparationofstudentsand/or
curricularmaterialsbasedupongenderunlessitservesasacompelling
pedagogicaltool.
3. Provideallstudentstheopportunitytoparticipateincocurricularand
extracurricularactivitiesinamannerconsistentwiththeirgender
identity,includingbutnotlimitedtointramuralandinterscholastic
athletics.
4. Provideallstudentswithaccesstofacilitiesthatalignwithstudents
genderidentity.
GenderInclusionGuidelines
SupportResources
Providesupportandaccesstoresourcesfortransgenderandgender
nonconformingstudentsandtheirfamilies.
TrainingandProfessionalDevelopment
Theschooldistrictshallconductstafftrainingforallstaffmembersontheir
responsiblyunderapplicablelawsandthispolicy,includingteachers,
administrators,counselors,socialworkers,andschoolnurses.Information
regardingthispolicyshallbeincorporatedintotrainingofnewschoolemployees.
StudentRecordsandInformationSystem
Theschoolshallmaintainamandatorypermanentstudentrecordthatincludesa
studentslegalnameandlegalgender.Theschoolwillchangeastudentsof icial
recordtore lectachangeinlegalnameorgenderuponreceiptofdocumentation
thatsuchchangehasbeenmadepursuanttoacourtorderorthroughamendmentof
stateorfederallyissueidenti ication.
NamesandPronouns
Everystudenthastherighttobeaddressedbyanameandpronounthat
correspondstotheirgenderidentity.Itisrecommendthatteachersasktransgender
orgendernonconformingstudentsatthebeginningoftheschoolyearhowthey
wanttobeaddressedinclass,atconferenceswiththestudentsguardian,orin
correspondencetothehome.
Restrooms
Providestudentswithaccesstoareasonablealternativeallgenderrestroom
facility,suchasasinglestallunisexbathroom,thephysicaleducationof ice,or
anotherprivateroom.Studentsshallhaveaccesstofacilitiesthatcorrespondtothe
genderidentitytheyconsistentlyassertatschool.
LockerRooms
Provideaccesstoareasonablealternativeallgenderlockerroomfacility,rather
thanthegenderspeci iclockerroomfacility,forchangingpurposes,suchasasingle
stallunisexbathroom,thephysicaleducationof ice,oranotherprivateroom.
Studentsshallhaveaccesstofacilitiesthatcorrespondtotheirgenderidentitythey
consistentlyassertatschool.
OvernightFieldTrips
Provideaccesstoareasonableadultsupervisedlodgingarrangementand/or
lodgingthatcorrespondstothegenderidentitythatthestudentconsistentlyasserts
attheschool.
PhysicalEducationClassesandIntermuralandInterscholasticAthletics
Allstudentsshallbepermittedtoparticipateinphysicaleducationclassesand
intermuralsportsinamannerconsistentwiththeirgenderidentity.
CoCurricularandExtracurricularActivities
FollowtheguidelinesestablishedbytheMinnesotaStateHighSchoolLeagueto
guideparticipationincocurricularandextracurricularactivitiesthatarebasedon
thestudentsgenderidentity.
DressCode
Ensurethattheschoolsdresscodeisfollowedwhileallowingstudentstodressin
accordancewiththeirgenderidentity.
