Task 1

During the practical the three main measuring devices that were used to measure the required part
were: a micrometre, Vernier callipers and a height gauge. In some instances a chamfer and round
gauges were needed to find the full accuracy of certain measurements but these tools we not
available at the time of the practical. In the drawing of the part all measurements with (v) represent
measurements taken by Vernier callipers, (m) represents the micrometre measurements and (h)
represents measurements taken by the height gauge.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages to the height gauge is that the instrument is digital and giving the full measurement on
the output display, this leaves no error to the person reading and interpreting the results.
Disadvantages to using a height gauge that all measurements are based on the surface of
measurement. To ensure that all measurements are accurate, the measuring instrument is to be
placed on a completely flat surface with no slope or change in height where measuring. Another
disadvantage to using a height gauge is that the particular model that was used only showed results
of 0.02 mm. In some cases, the measurements that were taking by the height gauge were 0.10 mm
out from those results taken from the micrometre.

There are two different types of Vernier callipers, traditional and digital. For this practical the
traditional version of Vernier callipers was used. This is a disadvantage and an advantage, when using
digital callipers, the user will rely mostly on the reading given by the instrument which depending on
the use and care of the instrument, can create large errors in the results given. Advantages of using
Vernier callipers is the three different types of measurements it can do. It has two different types of
jaws, internal and external. This allows the user to measure not only lengths and heights but also
hole diameters. it also is equipped with a depth scales. The level of accuracy when using Vernier
Callipers is 0.05 mm which depending on the amount of accuracy required, this can be a
disadvantage. Vernier callipers has another disadvantage, being that it can only measure to a certain
extent before a larger instrument is needed.

The advantages of using a micrometre over the other two types of measuring instruments, is the
higher level of accuracy being 0.01 mm. A disadvantage to using a micrometer is the way in which
the instrument is read. Without appropriate training, wrong values can be taken, causing inaccurate
results. Another disadvantage is the limited range in which each micrometer has. for a full spectrum
of results, a full range of different sized micrometers are needed. Also estimating the length of
measurement to choose the right micrometer.
