LANDMARK
PROJECTS
A major feature of the London Design Festival each year
is the ambitious programme of installations that we
call our Landmark Projects. First introduced in 2007, we
commission the worlds best designers and architects,
as well as pioneering new talents, to create something
extraordinary in response to a variety of stimuli such
as a particular material, a theme or a location. Over
the years, these installations have appeared in some of
Londons most prominent and best-loved spaces, including
the V&A, Southbank Centre, Tate Modern and Trafalgar
Square. This year, Greenwich Peninsula joins that list.
These installations have now become the public face
of the London Design Festival, representing spectacular
punctuation points around the city. They serve to
showcase the ambition, creativity and experimentation
that give London its reputation as the design capital of
the world.
The installations are the result of multiple partnerships
between designers, fabricators and venues. Crucially, our
Landmark Projects are made possible with the generous
patronage of our sponsors who have supported our
ongoing quest for ambition and excellence over the years.
The following pages feature information about our
projects and events for 2015.

The Embankment Gallery at Somerset House is the
backdrop to a sizeable installation by British designer
Max Lamb, titled My Grandfathers Tree.
The tree in question is an old ash that had started
to rot on the land of the designers grandfathers farm
in Yorkshire. To avoid the danger it posed to his nearby
cottage, the tree was reluctantly felled. Together with
my tree surgeon friend Jon Turnbull, we dissected the
tree from the top downwards, cutting it into sections
at regular intervals, which I could transform into fin-
ished logs to be used as stools, tables and chairs,
explains Max. I wanted the tree to remain integral
to the wood and to process each section of the tree
as little as possible, other than to make the top and
base level in order to give function to the material.
The result is sections of the tree divided into 130
logs laid out in order of diameter, with the 187 annual
growth rings clearly visible. With his intention that his
grandfathers tree should survive beyond its rooted
life, the ash tree continues to exist as an ash tree,
but with a new life, a new function and the start of a
new history.
Over the past decade, Max Lamb has garnered
a reputation for working with his hands to directly
manipulate single materials, turning the likes of boul-
ders, logs and even polystyrene into roughly hewn
seating objects, tables and the likes. This project is
an ambitious extension of his genre, working with an
entire tree to dramatic effect.

London is a vast city to navigate and, without proper planning,
you can waste a lot of time traveling between events.
We recommend a number of digital tools to assist in plotting your
travel route:
Use our online event search londondesignfestival.com/events
combined with My Festival to plan your own tailored itinerary.
Click Around Me when you are out and about to see events near
to your location.
For real-time travel information and public transport route
options, visit the Transport for London website and use their
Journey Planner: tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/ or download the
Citymapper App to your smartphone.
When using public transport, it is essential that you pre-
purchase an Oyster card (digital ticket), available at any
London station or Oyster Ticket Stops.
TUBE
The London Underground network comprehensively covers London
and is the fastest way to cover distance. If youre traveling short
distances, it may be quicker on a bus, bicycle or on foot.
BUS
The iconic red London bus is a good way to travel above ground
and enjoy the changing city views. Hop on a bus to take you short
distances or enjoy longer journeys if you have time.
BICYCLE
Weather permitting, getting around London on a bicycle is a
great way to traverse the city. Bicycles can be hired easily from
any Santander Bicycle Hire docking station, located across the
capitals central zone. Ride safely!
ON FOOT
London is a pleasant city in which to walk. We recommend you
experience the Design Districts by foot, which can all be traversed
in about 20 minutes.
