Unit 54 Assignment 1

File Formats:

Raster images:

A Bitmap / Raster image is resolution dependant image which means it is made up of lots of
single square pixels, all of a different colour which are arranged correctly to create your
image, if you zoom in to a Raster image you will get pixilation this is where the pixels stretch
and the image loses a lot of quality.

.JPEG, (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is one of the most common types of image files
you will come across, they normally achieve a 10:1 compression which is low Loss
compression, meaning that when compressed the image will lose little quality. .JPEG image
files are the most common image file used for digital cameras and other devices, which can
also capture images also .JPEG images are normally the type of image file you will find on
websites and across the World Wide Web.
.GIF, (Graphics Interchange Format) is a short animation type of image files where you chain
a number of Bitmap/Raster images together to form a short animation. .GIF animation files
allows you to use a palette of up to 256 different colours from the 24-bit RBG (Red, Blue,
and Green) colour space, this is good for more simple images such as a company logo for
example. .GIF image files are compressed using Lossless compression (LZW), which reduces
the size of the .GIF file without losing any visual quality at all! This compression technique
was created in 1985, 2 years before the .GIF file was created in 1975.
.PSD, (Photoshop Document) is a type of image file, which uses layers to edit or add effects
to the image; a .PSD is the default method of Photoshop to save data. When you have
completed your image you can then flatten the entire layer in Photoshop and convert it in to
a .JPEG, .GIF or .TIFF image file, once you have converted and flattened all the layers into
one image you cannot reverse the action.
Vector images:

A Vector animation is a term used to related animation with Vector images, so instead of
animating with pixel image you will be animated with Vector graphics. Victor graphics are a
lot better than Raster graphics because Raster graphics pixelate and lose a lot of quality
when you change the size and shape of the image. The good thing about Vector animation is
that it gives a very smoother animation since the images cannot be pixelated.

.EPS, (Encapsulated PostScript) is a graphics extension file format used for Vector images in
Adobe Illustrator. An. ESP file can also include text as well as images, also. ESP files have a
Bitmap version for simpler viewing of the image.
.FLA, (Macromedia Flash) is a file format used in Adobe Flash and a .FLA file is a raw
editable file in flash to store movies or animation. A .FLA file are mostly converted or saved
into a .SWF file to then be uploading on to the internet. Adobe bought Macromedia Flash in
2005 to then become Adobe Flash in 2005 to add to the Adobe Creative Cloud.
.AI, (Adobe Illustrator Artwork) is file format made by Adobe for representing single page
Vector drawings in an .EPS or .PDF file. An .AI file extension is use in Adobe Illustrator.
Programs that can view an .AI file are Programs such as Adobe Reader, Adobe Photoshop
and Preview as long as the .AI file has been saved as a .PDF compatibility option.

Metafiles:

Web page may include metadata specifying what language the page is written in, what tools
were used to create it, and where to find more information about the subject; this metadata
can automatically improve the reader's experience. An example of Metadata being used in
my website will the page description and keywords. The description is what the page is
about so Home page or Contact us page.
When adding keywords to a page of your website is quite simple really, you just put the
most commonly used words on your page so when people search that word in browser your
page your website will come higher up in the results. For example, if you sell cars on your
website and some wants a BMW M3, even if the searcher just searches BMW your sits will
still show up in the results.

File Extensions:

.FLA, (Macromedia Flash) is a file format used in Adobe Flash and a .FLA file is a raw editable
file in flash to store movies or animation. A .FLA file are mostly converted or saved into a
.SWF file to then be uploading on to the internet. Adobe bought Macromedia Flash in 2005
to then become Adobe Flash in 2005 to add to the Adobe Creative Cloud.

a .JPEG, .GIF or .TIFF image file, once you have converted and flattened all the layers into
one image you cannot reverse the action.

.PNG is a vector image file extension, which I believe, is the best and highest quality image
file in comparison to many others. The things about .PNG images, which are so good, is that
once exported, you can resize that image to any scale and it will not suffer from pixilation.
This is extremely good for print companies that need to post advertisements all over the city
because they will print the same poster / page advertisement huge on the side of a building
on a billboard and then you may see that same advertisement scaled down hugely on the
back of a telephone box.

.GIF, (Graphics Interchange Format) is a short animation type of image files where you chain
a number of Bitmap/Raster images together to form a short animation. .GIF animation files
allows you to use a palette of up to 256 different colours from the 24-bit RBG (Red, Blue,

Applications:

Vector-based Applications:

A vector graphics editor is a computer program that allows users to compose and
edit vector graphics images interactively on a computer and save them in one of many
popular vector graphics formats, such as EPS, PDF, WMF, SVG, or VML.
Vector editors are often contrasted with bitmap editors, and their capabilities complement
each other. Vector editors are often better for page layout, typography, logos, sharp-edged
artistic illustrations, technical illustrations, diagramming and flowcharting. Bitmap editors
are more suitable for retouching, photo processing, photorealistic illustrations, collage, and
illustrations drawn by hand with a pen tablet. Recent versions of bitmap editors such
as GIMP and Adobe Photoshop support vector tools and vector editors such as Adobe
Fireworks, Adobe FreeHand, Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Animation, Artboard,
Autodesk Graphic, CorelDraw, Sketch, Inkscape, sK1 or Xara Photo & Graphic Designer have
adopted raster effects that were once limited to bitmap editors.
Inkscape is a free to download software where you can create vector images / vector
graphics for many things such as print where you can resize the images without them being
effected by pixilation. Certain graphics such as creating logo and other images, which will be
reused and resized, are the most popular type of graphics to be produced as a Vector
graphic. This program can be used to create your own vector graphics or can search for
default images of vector graphics, which you can edit if you like such as the scale and colour
of it, or you can leave it how it is.
Raster-based Applications:

Adobe Photoshop is a Raster and Vector image production and photo / image editor
software, which is owned by the media software production company Adobe. In college, we
use Photoshop to create graphics for future product such as gathering assets for any
graphics, animation or video production we are currently working on. Some tasks we may
just need to import an image in to Photoshop to crop or to edit slightly where you can then
re-export in the new updated version. Other assignments like our most 2 previous
assignment where we have to create a full background for a TV animation episode many
other tools within Photoshop such as the brush tool and shapes tools as an example.

The American brothers Thomas and John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe
Systems Incorporated in 1988, developed Photoshop in 1987. Thomas Knoll, a PhD student
at the University of Michigan, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to
display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This program, called Display, caught the
attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who
recommended that Thomas turn it into a full-fledged image-editing program.
Use in Different Media Forms:

Print:

If I was creating my graphics for The Pixels band to then be published and sent out to print
there would actually not be any changed I would make in comparison to how I will be
creating my final graphics designs for The Pixels.
This is because when creating my Logo, A3 Poster and Album cover for The Pixels I will be
creating all three of these graphics in Photoshop and once complete I will publishing /
exporting all of these graphics as a .PNG file format, which means that the images will be
will not suffer from pixilation.
This is perfect for print because I would be using these same graphics in different
advertisements and when using images for print the same poster or image will be printed in
all different scales and sizes. For example, I may use my A3 Poster on a Billboard on the side
of a building in the city or I may scale down slightly to be placed on the back of a bus or
telephone box. I can even hugely down scale it on to an A5 piece of paper to hand out in
public as a leaflet.
Because I will be publishing / exporting my graphics as a .PNG for print this is perfect
because its the .PNG file which allows me to rescale and resize the graphics on a to a huge
scale.

Moving Images:

If I were to use these graphics as a moving image so either in a video or an animation

sequence there is a couple of options which I can change when publishing / exporting all
three of my graphics I have created for the Manchester based band, The Pixels.
If I were to use my graphics as a moving image in a video production and in a video editing
software such as Adobe After effects, Adobe Premiere and Song Vegas Pro then I will
publish / export my graphics as a .PNG file so that they can be resized with in the video
editing software to be placed over the video footage. Since the graphics will be exported as
a .PNG, I will also be able to use them for a stop motion type animation.
If I wanted to use my graphics for moving images, I can also use them to create a GIF. A .GIF
file, (Graphics Interchange Format) is a short animation type of image files where you chain
a number of Bitmap/Raster images together to form a short animation. .GIF animation files
allows you to use a palette of up to 256 different colours from the 24-bit RBG (Red, Blue,

example. .GIF image files are compressed using Lossless compression (LZW), which reduces
the size of the .GIF file without losing any visual quality at all! This compression technique
was created in 1985, 2 years before the .GIF file was created in 1975.

Interactive:

I were to create and produce my graphics purely for interactive programs / properties then
there a couple of formats / option for the file formats and methods I can publish / export my
graphic designs as to make them interactive or for my graphics to be used for interactive
purposes.
If I were to publish / export my graphics for The Pixel band for something within the
interactive media industry such as a website advertisement then I will be publishing /
exporting my graphic designs as a .JPG image file format or a .GIF image / animation file
format.
I would publish / export my graphic designs as a .JPG image file format if the advert was just
static with no other moving images or animation in on the advertisement. My graphic
designs for either The Pixels band can also be a .JPG image file format because all website
advertisements are always the same size at the top, bottom, left or right side of the website
page. Since all website advertisements are the same size, when producing my graphics I
would be just producing my graphics at that exact size so no rescaling / resizing will be
needed.
.JPEG, (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is one of the most common types of image files
you will come across, they normally achieve a 10:1 compression which is low Loss
compression, meaning that when compressed the image will lose little quality. .JPEG image
files are the most common image file used for digital cameras and other devices, which can
also capture images also .JPEG images are normally the type of image file you will find on
websites and across the World Wide Web.
If my graphics were being produce for website advertisements, which also included some
type of small animation sequence within them to attract people to click the link to be
directed to another website, then I would have to publish / export my graphics out as a .GIF
image / animation short file format. Also the sizing of my image would have to be of the
exact size of a website advertise because it cannot not be successfully be rescaled / resized
at a later date without suffering from pixilation.
A .GIF file, (Graphics Interchange Format) is a short animation type of image files where you
chain a number of Bitmap/Raster images together to form a short animation. .GIF animation
files allows you to use a palette of up to 256 different colours from the 24-bit RBG (Red,

for example. .GIF image files are compressed using Lossless compression (LZW), which
