SUMMARY OF CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

My passion in dental hygiene started when I worked for a periodontist in Vancouver, Canada.
Upon graduation, I have been practicing as a registered dental hygienist in Hong Kong for 3 years.
I performed extra- and intra-oral examination, oral health assessment, radiograph exposure and
interpretation, treatment planning, prophylaxis, root planning and scaling, oral hygiene instruction,
evaluation, and referral. To continue my career, I entered the dental hygiene program in California.
During the dental hygiene program in California, I have added local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and
soft tissue curettage to the list of dental hygiene duties. I also had the honor to participate in a
mission trip to Vietnam. Within the short 10 days during the winter break, our group was able to

2

community by providing dental hygiene services to the underserved population at various
community dental clinics and also to give oral health presentation to the special need.

SUMMARY OF SERVICE ACTIVITIES

During the 2 years in the dental hygiene programs, I had a lot of opportunities to extend my knowledge in
dental hygiene to the general public by going to different schools, children museums, and community
clinics. At schools, I have given presentations on very basic dental knowledge appropriate for the
audience's age and mental capability and provided some hands on experience on toothbrushing; At

10
Rosanna Young

childrens museum, I have given some basic oral health education to the children and their parents to
prevent cavities; At community clinics, I have provided clinical services such as prophylaxis, SRP for the
underserved population. Among all the activities, the most memorable one was the mission trip to
Vietnam. It was a once in a lifetime, yet very humble, experience to learn about the culture, their oral
health perceptions, and the dental care system. Due to the lack of resources and accessibility, I was
surprised by how much they were able to gain from our minor contribution such as OHI and free
toothbrush and toothpaste. We should be blessed with what we have in a developed country.

TEACHING and MENTORING

curriculum development
- Presentation on a course in oral pathology

TEACHING NARRATIVE

My first informal teaching experience was to give an oral presentation to a group of handicapped clients at the
Direction Association for the Handicapped in Hong Kong. My group and I prepared a PowerPoint on basic oral
health education and provided some hands-on experience for the clients and their caregivers. In California, I had a
lot more informal teaching opportunities which inspired me to attend grad school. During the first year at school,
my group and I have given a presentation on infection control. We taught the class about instruments
decontamination by making a 5 minute video. In the second year, my class and I have set up 15 stations in the clinic
to teach the 1st year dental hygiene students and the dental assisting students on the use of various oral hygiene aids.
I was responsible for the use of interdental brush. I have prepared a short video clip, many pictures, and interdental
brushes for the participants to enhance their learning experience. My clinic instructor has also brought us to do
some community outreach by going to special needs classrooms to teach the special needs students and their
caregivers some basic oral health and oral hygiene instructions. In general, throughout the 2 years at school, I have
been peer tutoring the 1st year students and the upcoming dental hygiene class on various clinical skills such as
infection control, extra and intraoral examination, instrumentations with various instruments, etc. From these

11
Rosanna Young

experience, I found great satisfaction from being able to give constructive advice to students improving their skills.
As a result, I decided to continue my dental hygiene education to learn more in teaching.

2015-2016 Kim Nguyen DH at Foothill College Personal advisor Second year DH student 52 hours/ 1 year

MENTORING NARRATIVE

The primary role of being a mentor for my "little buddy" was to ensure her success in the program. I gave
her study tips on how to understand and memorize the materials to better prepare for tests and exams; I
gave her my personal experience and advice on seeing pediatric patients and giving oral health
instructions; I also gave her clinical tips to increase patient's comfort. In general, I would be there when
she needed me.

OTHER CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

As a class, we created a patient hand-out that teaches basic oral health and the use of various oral hygiene
aids for patient to take home. We utilized a lot of pictures for easier understanding. In addition, we put
together a series of short video clips on how to use various oral hygiene aids including toothbrush, floss,
interdental brush, perio-aid to provide additional mean of teaching aid for patients.

RESEARCH

2016-2017 Problem-based Learning Implementation in U.S. Dental Hygiene Programs: Program

Directors Knowledge and Perceptions
Principle Investigator: Dr. Lisa Chung, DDS, MPH
Role: Co-Investigator
Responsibilities: study design, development of methods of data collection, gaining IRB
approval, recruitment of subjects, collecting the data, compiling and analyzing responses,
interpreting data, and writing the manuscript

RESEARCH NARRATIVE
My interest in research did not begin until I entered the master program in dental hygiene at UCSF. Being
a previously foreign trained dental hygienist, I had the chance to experience 2 different dental hygiene
programs that use very different educational methods to teach. Going back to dental hygiene school again
after 9 years, I prepared myself to learn some new knowledge; Yet, I was surprised by how much I have
applied the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that were developed extensively from my previous
education using problem-based learning. I felt very fortunate to have that experience. As a result, this have
led to my interest in investigating problem base-learning implementation in U.S. dental hygiene programs
and program directors knowledge of perceptions of it. My study focused on the problem-based learning
implementation level, program directors attitudes, familiarity, and knowledge, and implementation
challenges and barriers. Although I believe no one educational method is superior to others, a better
understanding of other educational methods, such as problem-based learning, may accommodate students
with various learning style preferences, resulting in student learning experience enhancement and reaching
the goal of acquiring the skills necessary to adopt to this ever changing world of dentistry.
