1 Lesson Plan for 3-5 year olds | "Hello My World!" | Helen Doron, 2015
Introduction letter

Dear Teacher,

Thank you for joining Hello My World!an international social and educational
programme initiated by the Helen Doron Educational Group to mark the 30th
anniversary of Helen Doron English.

When a child learns English, we give them a gift that opens doors to the world. Through English, they
have the opportunity to learn about others and establish new relationships. We wish to teach children
worldwide about the importance of cooperation and compassion for the world we share.

The Helen Doron method of teaching English as a foreign language has two cornerstones: repeated
background hearing of songs, stories and conversations, specially created for our programmes, as well
as skilled positive reinforcement.

We have decided to make this lesson available to the general public for use by teachers and parents
everywhere and invite all children and parents worldwide to take part in this important cause.

Your support is important and we invite you to join us. For more information about Hello My World! and

Activity 3: Picture of a flying bird, a jumping kangaroo, a fish in the water and Paul running
(downloads), the orangutan on a stick from Activity 1
Activity 4: Pictures of a house, the book of rhymes and a rainforest (download)
Activity 5: A picture of a fruit basket (download), a board with pictures of various fruit and other food
items attached with Velcro or Blu Tack
Activity 6: A green sheet of paper or fabric, trees made of toilet rolls (or rolled up cardboard) with
pictures of treetops and orangutans on them (download), a grab bag
Activity 8: A toy tractor with the face of a person in the window (can be a simple white round sticker
with a face drawn on it).
Activity 9: Black and white picture of an orangutan in a heart to colour (download)

Activities
1. Greet the children and introduce your friend the orangutan on a stick download or orangutan doll
if you have one. You can give it a name (e.g. Ori) and ask the children, e.g.: Is Ori a dog? Is Ori a
mouse? Then say: Ori is an orangutan. Show the photo of a real orangutan as well.
2. The children may spontaneously call the orangutan a monkey. In this case use the downloaded
pictures of monkeys and apes and briefly explain that orangutans and gorillas do not have tails like
monkeys. They are apes. You can also discuss other physical characteristics of the orangutan (long
arms, red hair) and briefly review body parts.
3. Stand up. Show the children the downloaded picture of the bird and say: Let's be birds. What
do birds do? (making flying gestures as you ask this). Elicit: Birds Fly. Pretend to fly around the
room. Do the same with the kangaroo (jump) the fish (swim), Paul (run). Then hold your orangutan
on the stick again and ask the children: Does Ori swim like a fish (with swimming gestures)? Does
he fly like a bird? No. Then show the picture of the orangutan climbing the tree and say: Ori the
Orangutan climbs. He climbs trees. Make upward grasping movements alternating right and left
fists. Encourage the children to do the same. Ask: What are we doing? We are climbing trees.
4. Sit Down. Show the downloaded pictures of the house and the book of rhymes and ask the children
if orangutan live in houses or in the book of rhymes eliciting a negative answer. Then show them the
picture of the rainforest. Say: Ori lives in a rainforest with many trees.
5. Tell the children that Ori is hungry (using a tummy rubbing gesture). Ask: What does Ori the
orangutan eat? and show the picture of the fruit basket. Say: Ori eats fruit.
Point to the downloaded pictures of fruit attached to a board with Velcro or to the wall with Blu Tack.
Ask the children in turn to go and bring Ori some fruit to eat. They must choose the fruit from among

the food images. Encourage interaction by asking questions like: Does Ori eat
soup? Biscuits? No. He doesn't. He eats apples. If they bring a fruit that
has been learnt in the past ask: What have you brought Ori? And elicit e.g.: A
banana. If it is a fruit they haven't learnt, name it for them. Have Ori thank
them for the fruit.
6. Place the sheet of green paper or green fabric on the floor and say: Let's make
a rainforest. Let each child take a toilet roll tree with an orangutan on it out of the
bag and place it on the green forest floor. Elicit: I've got a tree with an orangutan.
Then say: Put your tree in the rainforest. When the children are done, count the trees together.
7. Point to the orangutans on the tree and Elicit: This is a big orangutan. It's a mummy/daddy
orangutan. This is a little orangutan. This is a baby orangutan. Then say: It's an orangutan
family. Also draw the children's attention to the orangutans faces and encourage them to express
that they are happy in the rainforest.
8. Bring a big toy tractor/bulldozer with a picture of a face on the window (to make it clear it is driven by
a person) and have it approach the trees. You can even knock down one tree without an orangutan on
it to clarify the situation. With alarmed gestures and facial expression say that the man in the tractor
wants to cut down the trees. Encourage the children to approach the scene and say: Stop! Don't
cut down the trees! The orangutans live in the trees. Move the tractor away and congratulate the
children: Hurray! You protected the rainforest! The orangutans are happy.
9. Give each child a downloaded black and white orangutan in a heart to colour at home. Encourage
them to hold their pictures close and say: I love orangutans.
VIDEO
The video could be of the children hugging orangutan pictures (the ones they have coloured or
orangutans on sticks) and saying: We love orangutans.
Alternatively you can have activities 6-8 filmed for the video. You may also prepare any other video you prefer.
