CCEA approves proposal of R&D

Technology for Thermal Power
Plants
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs
(CCEA) on 10 August 2016 approved a
proposal of research and development
(R&D) project for development of Advanced
Ultra Super Critical (AUSC) Technology for
Thermal Power Plants.
The estimated cost of the project is 1554
crore rupees. BHEL will be provided one
time budgetary support of 900 crore rupees
spread over a period of three years for
implementation of the project.

Rajya Sabha passed Maternity Benefit
(Amendment) Bill, 2016
Rajya Sabha on 11 August 2016 passed the
Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The
Bill seeks to amends the Maternity Benefit Act,
1961.
The Maternity Benefit Bill amends provisions
related to the duration and applicability of
maternity leave, and other facilities. The
existing Act regulates the employment of
women during the period of child birth, and
provides maternity benefits. It applies to

Employees Compensation (Amendment) Bill,
2016 to reduce litigation in cases of disputes
arising over compensation to workers.

NITI Aayog ties up with US EIA to set up
portal on energy data
National Institution for Transforming India (NITI)
Aayog on 10 August 2016 signed agreement with
United States (US) Energy Information
Administration (EIA) to set up a web portal on
energy data.
The web portal will host all the data related to
energy sector including oil & gas, coal, solar &
thermal energy etc. NITI Aayog, a think tank of Union
Government, is working to develop India's energy

Nagaland government to grant 33%
reservation to women in Urban Local
Bodies
The Nagaland Government on 10 August 2016
decided to grant 33 percent reservation to women
in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). The decision was
taken during a cabinet meeting held in Kohima.
The decision was announced by the Chief Minister
TR Zeliang during the State Level Watershed
Conference held in Kohima.

Odisha government to make Aadhar Card
mandatory for procurement of paddy
In a bid to maintain transparency and ensure quick
payment of dues, the Odisha government has
decided to make Aadhar Card mandatory for
procurement of paddy in the state.
In a meeting at the state secretariat in Bhubaneswar

Japan protests over China's radar unit near
disputed waters
Japan has filed a protest to Beijing after the discovery
that China installed radar equipment in a gas
exploration platform close to disputed waters in the
East China Sea, a Japanese foreign ministry spokesman
said on Sunday.
Japan fears that the radar, a type commonly found on
patrol ships and not necessary for gas field
development, could be a sign that China intends to use
gas exploration platforms in the disputed waters as
military stations, Japanese media said.

Britain's exit from the European Union could be
delayed until at least late 2019 because the
government was too "chaotic" to start the two-year
process early next year, the Sunday Times reported,
citing sources it said were briefed by ministers.

Cognizant narrows gap with TCS, HCL
with Wipro
Cognizant's been running a superb race. It
overtook Wipro in 2011-12, Infosys two years
later, and now it's steadily catching up with TCS.
HCL Technologies has similarly narrowed the gap
with Wipro.
In 2011-12, Cognizant's revenue was 60% of
TCS's. Last fiscal, it was 75%. In three of the past
four years, it had revenue growth of 20-21%.

The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee
(GEAC) has once again been pulled up for
withholding information from the public by the
Central Information Commission (CIC). The CIC has

League title began with a shock defeat
Leicester City began their premier league season
with a shock loss at the hands of newly promoted
Hull city, who are manager less and relegation
favourites. Under caretaker boss Mike Phelan,
Hull took the lead when Adama Diomande and
Abel Hernandez combined acrobatically, with
Diomande awarded the goal. Riyad Mahrez
replied from the penalty spot at the start of the
second half after Demarai Gray had been fouled.
But Robert Snodgrass earned the Tigers victory by
hitting a winner in the 57th minute. Its the first
time the defending champions have lost on the
opening day of the season since 1989-90, when
Arsenal lost at Manchester United.

India Thrash West Indies by 237 runs; seal
the series 2-0
India wrapped up the second Test match on day 5 by
237 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four
match Test series. Setting a target of 346 runs in front
of the hosts, India started off pretty well bagging two
wickets within four runs. The quicker bowlers were
clinical in their planning as the trio of Ishant Sharma,
Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami caused
the initial damages. West Indies were 53/3 at the
stroke of lunch. The script became more ugly for the
home team after the lunch as they were left tottering
at 95/8 when the only West Indies batsman Darren
Bravo who scored a half century was sent back into the
hut by Mohammad Shami and eventually West Indies
were bundled out for 108 runs.
India have the series in the bag and a win in Trinidad
Test, starting from August 18, will help them climb to
No. 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings.

as Congress President gave the call for Poorna
Swaraj or total independence from British
colonial rule, January 26 was chosen as the
Independence Day. In fact, Congress party
continued to celebrate it 1930 on wards, till India
attained independence and January 26, 1950 was
chosen as the Republic Day the day India
formally became a sovereign country and was no
longer a British Dominion.
So how did August 15 become Indias
independence day?
