TRANSMISSION IP/ATM/PDH/SDH

The OBSAI family of specifications provides the architecture, function descriptions and minimum
requirements for integration of a set of common modules into a base transceiver station (BTS).
As a minimum, the BTS will have the capability to be configured from a set of common modules
in order to support one or more current or future wireless network access standards.
The technical requirements in the OBSAI specifications form an interface specification to ensure
compatibility and interoperability among and between the set of common modules.
The requirements do not address the quality or reliability of service of the access standards, nor
do they cover measurement procedures.

Power Distribution and Fuses module (FPFA/B)
DC Input connector

FPFA / B

Type label

Power is distributed from FPFA/B to the System Module. FPFA is used with System Module rel. 1.
In System Module rel. 2 it is replaced with FPFB, which provides more power feeding capacity to
RF Modules. FPFB is compatible with both System Module releases.

FPFA operation
FPFA version A101
Power for the System Extension Module comes through the circuit breaker and power can be switched
off via the circuit breaker. This must be done when connecting the Extension module to the System
Module to avoid hot-plug connection. This is also required when disconnecting from the System Module.
When the EXT circuit breaker is pulled to OFF position, the power supply to the Extension module is
switched off. Power feed to the System Module is still on.
FPFA version A102, A103 or later
FPFA versions A102, A103 or later have a common power supply via the same circuit breaker for the
System Module and the System Extension Module. This means that the same circuit breaker switches
on and off the power to both the System Module and the System Extension Module.
The System Module and Extension module are reset by pulling the EXT circuit breaker on/off switch on
the front panel.
Note: When connecting the Extension module to the System Module, switch off the circuit breaker to
avoid hot-plug connection to the Extension module. Then switch the System Module back on.
This precaution is also required when disconnecting the Extension module from the System Module.
The fuse rates for the FPFA are:
A.101: RF1-3 20.0A, EXT 25.0A
A.102 or later: RF1-3 20.0A, EXT 25.0A (System Module supplied via EXT circuit breaker)

FPFB operation
The FPFB does not have any circuit breakers but instead uses electrical fuses, and includes a
dedicated power switch for the System Module.

There are five membrane switches on the FPFB front panel for the outputs.
The switches control power-control circuits and have two states: On and Stand-by.
This allows to individually connect or disconnect the power supply from each of the 5 possible modules:
RF Module / RRH 1
RF Module / RRH 2
RF Module / RRH 3
System Module
System Extension Module

Baseband Extension for Flexi WCDMA BTS

BTS capacity can be upgraded by adding a second System Module

When the System Module is used as a System Extension Module operating in a
baseband extension mode, a transmission sub-module is not installed. Instead, a
dummy transmission sub-module is installed to provide IP55 protection. This item is
also included in Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA)
The only connectors that can be used are the DC input terminal and the two optical
EXT interfaces connected to the System Module
Synchronisation is provided by the System Module
No commissioning required to integrate FSKA to System Module. FSKA will detected
automatically
The auto detection requires that (the same) WN3.3 or later BTS SW exists and is active
both in the System Module and System Extension Module. However, support for the
FSMC and FSMD is first introduced in WN5.0.
The initial SW upgrade of the Extension System Module is to be done stand-alone
and requires a (spare) FTM equipped.
Rel. 2 System Modules can be used in any combination
Rel. 1 System Module (FSMB) can NOT act as an Extension for a Rel. 2 System
Module (FSMC/D/E)

System Extension Module
The System Module can be used as a System Extension Module operating in a
baseband extension mode to add channel capacity. In this case, it is connected to
the master System Module with two optical cables and a DC cable. These items
are provided with Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA).
The System Extension Kit delivery contains the following items:
Cable set assembly
2 x optical cable
1 x power cable
4 x optical transceiver
Transmission dummy panel
When the System Module is used as a System Extension Module, the external
synchronisation input connectors cannot be used. Synchronisation is provided by
the master System Module.
The Rel.1 System Extension Module provides a basic capacity of 32 CE without
the channel capacity licence. Enabling more CE capacity for the System Extension
Module requires that a channel capacity licence (RAN912 Channel Capacity LK)
with sufficient capacity is downloaded to the BTS.

FTFB applications
FTFB can be operated in various modes:
The FlexiHopper radio link can be fully dedicated to either PDH or Ethernet, or can be operated in
Hybrid mode so that one part of the capacity is used for PDH and the other for Ethernet.
Total capacity offered by FlexiHopper radio is 32 Mbps. The capacity can be assigned to the different
traffic types in steps of 2 Mbps.
In case of chaining or co-location, the PDH traffic can be cross-connected at 2 Mbps level towards the
other Flexbus interfaces. In case of Ethernet traffic, aggregation takes place by Ethernet switching.
The 2 GbE ports can be used to create FlexiPacket Radio chains or offload Ethernet to any other
Ethernet media. FlexiPacket radio offers up to 350 Mbps Ethernet throughput.
FTFB supports various microwave radio topologies:
FlexiHopper tail sites
FlexiHopper chain sites
Chain sites with FlexiHopper southbound and FlexiPacket Radio northbound
FlexiPacket Radio chain sites
and the evolution from one to the other.
With the 3rd Flexbus interface, all tail & chain site applications above can also be implemented in case
of co-location with any installed Flexbus-enabled NSN BTS.

Supported Iub modes:
When just the FlexiHopper radio interface is used for BTS backhaul, the supported Iub modes are
ATM Iub, IP Iub, and Dual Iub.
In case the GbE interface is used exclusively, whether it connects to FlexiPacket Radio or any other
Ethernet media, the supported Iub mode is IP Iub.
In case both interfaces are used in parallel for the backhaul connection, Dual Iub is supported (IP part
over GbE port, non-IP part over FlexiHopper in TDM mode)
Synchronization modes:
Synchronisation over Ethernet is provided via Synchronous Ethernet.
In addition, a mode is supported that allows the propagation of this synchronization signal to the
other GbE interface (no holdover, no SSM), such that one additional co-located or chained BTS can
be synchronized (if it also supports Synchronous Ethernet)
Interface powering options:
Either the 2x FlexiHopper radio interfaces can be powered, or Power over Ethernet (up to 60W) can
be enabled for the primary GbE interface.
FTFB HW is also ready to support CESoPSN via nxE1 within the Flexbus interface, to enable the
combined Ethernet backhaul of co-located 2G/3G NSN BTSs.

Dual RF Module features
The Dual RF Module has two dual-carrier transmitters, and four dual-carrier receivers that support two
dual-carrier branches with 2-way uplink diversity. It can therefore support multiple configurations.
The Single RF Module is a half-capacity version of the Dual RF Module. It has one TX output that
supports a maximum of two TX carriers (two carriers per TX chain). There is one RX input connector
as well.

The main and diversity branches include Bias-Ts with lightning strike protectors (Single and Dual RF
Module). The main branch Bias-T is used for Flexi Antenna Line and MHA support. The diversity branch
Bias-T is only used for MHA support. The operating voltages fed via main antenna line are 0 VDC/ +12
VDC/ +28.5 VDC and via diversity antenna line 0 VDC/ +12 VDC.

The main branch also includes an Antenna Line VSWR Monitor (power meter for forward and reflected
voltage ratio measuring). The VSWR monitoring system is used for producing alarms for the antenna
line condition based on the alarm thresholds (Single and Dual RF Module).
As a default setting, the minor alarm will be generated when the VSWR is 1.9 and the major alarm (cell
down) will be generated when the VSWR is 2.6. However, it is possible to adjust both minor and major
alarm thresholds within the range 1.5 3.5. The antenna line does not provide any alarms without a
valid licence (Line Supervision RAN907LK).
