1) Architectural Programming for Project / building Typology

If u have a thesis project in mind, U can do a study to arrive a design program for your building type/
project.

What is Architectural programming? Its fairly simple. The first step in design is referred to as
programming. Programming entails discovering the project needs and goals and getting them down on
paper in either written or graphic format (or both). Its derivation of design requirements through
systematic research methods.

2) Phenomenological Studies (its term used for sensorial studies): (user experience : visual ,
touch , smell , olfactory) of any building (traditional or contemporary)

THIS will INCLUDE sensorial studies based on elements like LIGHT, Color also.

a) Of doing this will be to use theories available on Phenomenology in architecture. Analysis

of any type / building/ works of any architect are possible by using them as the framework
(so like if Zumthor says there are 9 factors which contribute to the Atmosphere of
architecture. We analyze our case studies based on those 9 factors)

*Students should stick to live, accessible case studies because such factors cannot be analyzed
without physical access.

b) The Second method would be to do a Quantitative Research. So if someone has to do
research on lighting. It can be done using scientific instruments. Plotting such readings on graphs and
arriving at a more scientific conclusion

3) Semiotics Studies (semiotics is study of signs and symbols)

How do we read and understand buildings?

How does architecture communicate?

There are architectural theories which will help one understand the science behind how people decipher
and make meaning out of architecture. Such studies could be supported using user based surveys.
Diagrams can be extensively be used in questionnaires.
