ThisproductcontainsfinalestimatesoftheAboriginalandTorresStraitIslander,nonIndigenousand
totalpopulationsofAustraliaat30June2011,forvariousgeographies.
Estimatesaredisaggregatedbyage(5yearagegroups,withsomesingleyearofagedataavailable)
andsexforstateandterritory,RemotenessAreasandIndigenousRegions.Onlytotalestimatesfor
StatisticalAreasLevel2areavailable.
TheestimatesoftheAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderandnonIndigenouspopulationspresentedin
thispublicationarebasedon2011CensusofPopulationandHousingcountsadjustedfornet
undercountasmeasuredbythePostEnumerationSurvey.TheextentofundercoverageofAboriginal
andTorresStraitIslanderAustraliansinthe2011Censusandtherelativelysmallsamplesizeofthe
PostEnumerationSurveytoadjustforthatundercoveragemeanstheestimatesshouldbeinterpreted
withadegreeofcaution.
Descriptionofthemethodsusedtoproducetheestimatesarecontainedinthetechnicalnoteinthis
product.
SingleyearofagepopulationestimatesforAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpeoplesfor30June
2011shouldbeusedwithcaution.Theestimatesaresubjecttoerrorsthatcannotbecomprehensively
adjustedforwithinthepopulationestimatescompilationprocess,giventhelimitedabilitytoestimate
CensusundercountbyIndigenousstatusandotherdemographiccharacteristics.Featurespresentin
singleyearofageCensuscountsmaybelikelytoappearinpopulationestimatesevenafter
adjustmentsforundercountandotherfactorshavebeenapplied.TheABSrecommendsthatfiveyear
agegroupsshouldbeusedinpreferencetosingleyearofagedatawhereverpossible,particularlyfor
statesandterritorieswithrelativelysmallAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpopulations.

ThefinalestimatedresidentAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpopulationofAustraliaasat30June
2011was669,900people,or3%ofthetotalAustralianpopulation.Thispopulationestimaterepresents
alargeincreaseintheAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpopulationestimatesfromtheestimateof
517000for30June2006.ThischangewillbeexploredintheupcomingpublicationCensusof
PopulationandHousing:UnderstandingtheIncreaseinAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderCounts
Between2006and2011(cat.no.2077.0).
Ofthestatesandterritories,thelargestpopulationsofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderAustralians
livedinNewSouthWales(208,500people)andQueensland(189,000people).Thesmallestpopulation
ofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderAustralianslivedinTheAustralianCapitalTerritory(6,200
people).
AboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderAustralianscomprised30%ofthepopulationoftheNorthern
Territory,thehighestproportionofanystateorterritory.

people.ThemedianageoftheAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpopulationat30June2011was
21.8years,comparedto37.6yearsforthenonIndigenouspopulation.
IndigenousStatus(individualcategories)
AmongtheAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpopulationin2011,90%ofpeople(606,200people)
identifiedasbeingofAboriginaloriginonly,6%(38,100)wereofTorresStraitIslanderoriginonly,and
4%(25,600)wereofbothAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderorigin.
