SUMMER 2017 COURSE INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to CSC121 online. This document is a supplement to the course syllabus. It

tells you things that are specific to this online section.

FORMAT

This section is taught completely on the Internet. Students are expected to spend
about 5 to 8 hours on every lesson to do the following:
(1) Read the lesson document and textbook
(2) Complete a quiz on Blackboard.
(3) Do lab assignment and submit it to Blackboard.
(4) Participate in discussion forum.

This is a 10-week summer session class. It goes much faster than a regular semester.
We will cover two lessons every week.

There are two exams. You will take these exams on Blackboard.

TOOLS

1. Blackboard is the primary tool we use for this course. Log on every day to read
course announcements, download documents, check Assignment scores, etc.
2. I will also use email to communicate with students. Every Wake Tech student is
given an official Wake Tech email account. Whenever I send class announcements
and individual messages from Blackboard, I will send them to your Wake Tech email
account. Please check that email account every day.
3. You need some software to write and test Python programs. You can find a
document about installing software in your computer by clicking Getting Started on
the course main menu in Blackboard.

EMAIL

Wake Tech provides every student with an official e-mail account which is to be used
for all e-mail correspondence with instructors and college officials. I send email to the
whole class frequently. My email messages will be sent to your my.waketech.edu
address. Please check your my.waketech.edu account every day.

TAKING COURSE ENTRY QUIZ

Wake Tech requires students of all online or hybrid courses to take a course entry quiz.
This quiz has 10 multiple choice questions reviewing how to use Blackboard. The score
is not used to calculate your course grade. You must take and submit this quiz by
5/22/17 Monday 11:59 PM. Otherwise, you will be dropped from the course
with no refund.

If you take more than one Internet or hybrid course, you have to take this quiz in every
course you are taking.

ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION, ATTENDANCE POLICY AND COURSE WITHDRAWAL

Wake Tech requires students to attend at least 90% of a course. After a student has
entered a course, we use submission of lab assignments to count attendance. Each lab
assignment is equivalent to 5 contact hours. If you fail to turn in a lab assignment
by the due date, you will be considered absent for 5 hours. If you miss a
total of 8 hours or more, you will be withdrawn from the course immediately
without warning.

All assignments must be submitted on time. Late submissions are NOT accepted.
If you fail to submit an assignment by the deadline, you will receive a score of 0 and an
absence of 5 hours, regardless of the reason. There is no exception. You will not get
any extension for any reason, including sickness, work or family emergency, computer
or Internet connection problems, etc. All lab assignments are already posted on
Blackboard. You should work on assignments early. Do not wait until the day the
assignment is due. Please see the document Instructions and Policies on Assignment
Submission for more information about homework submission.

A student can withdraw from this course at any time after the 10% point. If for some
reason you want to withdraw, please email a withdrawal request and the reason (e.g.
work, family, health, etc.) to me. I will submit a course withdrawal form for you. My
email address is mcleung@waketech.edu. Dont forget to specify your name and
course code. If your last date of attendance is on or before the 60% point of the

semester, you will get a W grade. This W grade is not used in the calculation of GPA.
If your last date of attendance is after the 60% point, you will get either a WP grade or
a WF grade, depending on your performance up to that point. A WF grade is
equivalent to F when your GPA is calculated.

The instructor has the authority to withdraw a student if the student fails to reach the
required 90% attendance. If the last day of attendance is on or before 60% of the
semester, the student will receive a W. If the last day of attendance is after 60% of
the semester, the student will get either a WP or a WF.

GRADING

Your course grade is determined by your performance in the following areas:

Lab assignments 25% Quizzes 10%

Midterm exam 25% Project 10%
Final Exam 30%

A 10-point scale is used to determine your letter grade:

90.0 100.0 A 60.0 69.9 D

80.0 89.9 B 0.0 59.9 F
70.0 79.9 C

DISCUSSION FORUMS

Discussion forums will be created throughout the course. Every student is expected to
participate.

GETTING HELP ON ASSIGNMENTS

If you have troubles doing assignments, you have a few options:

(1) Email me your questions at least 24 hours before it is due. I will get back to you
within 24 hours (usually within a few hours).
(2) Post it on the Discussion Forum of this course and see whether other students give
you help.
(3) Ask anybody you think who can help you.
(4) Contact Individualized Learning Center [http://www.waketech.edu/student-
services/individualized-learning-center/math-computers]. They have tutors helping

taking Internet classes [see http://www.waketech.edu/student-

services/individualized-learning-center/online-support].

Everything you turn in must be your own work. If somebody gives you help, you must
understand what that person told you and write the answer yourself. I reserve the
right of asking you to explain the answers you submitted in assignments and exams.
