East Midlands Branch Report

Report by Helen Bailey
A new look at the UK flexible pavement design method
Abstract: The current UK analytical pavement design method is based on foundation
surface stiffness classes and relies on a single flexural criterion for the asphalt pavement
layers. This criterion, however, does not consider the fatigue properties of mixtures
currently used in the UK. The method also assumes a design traffic speed of 50 km/h.
In this presentation, the effect of traffic speed and pavement thickness on pavement
design were discussed. Furthermore, fatigue performance of mixtures currently used
in the UK are evaluated and incorporated into the design calculations.

Making History
IAT East-West Midlands Branch First Annual Dinner Dance

In celebration of the IATs 50th Anniversary, no expense has been spared. This year arrive early, settle in and
experience the world-class luxury of the award-winning Belfry Hotel & Resort. Surrounded by over 500 acres of

also pleased to be able to offer a 10% discount on the Spa and Golf Course.

Be sure to be ready early to mingle with friends and colleagues before dining in the Warwick Suite where a three

Specification of low temperature asphalt for refurbishing roads is likely to become the default position

4. What is most noticeable is that all bar one

of the 30 points plotted have a PSV below

It is very unlikely that any road surfacing now

uses aggregate with a PSV below 55 so it is
unsurprising that the relationship between PSV
and MSSC (or CSC) currently is very different to
what it was in 1972.

I have done a small survey of crash frequency

between them is very poor and what

i.e. higher CSC indicates higher crash frequency.
There is much to learn, therefore, even after
